In this Lecture Demonstration, Sona Jobarteh will introduce West Africa’s unique musical culture and distinctive instruments used exclusively by griots, and performs extracts from traditional works. “Sona Jobarteh is Africa’s first female griot kora virtuoso, and also a fine singer and composer, blending traditional music, blues and Afropop to impressive effect” －The Guardian, UK

The kora, a West African harp, is traditionally played by male griots, or hereditary musicians, and never by women. This is the woman, Sona Jobarteh, who decided to change the rules. She stands as she plays, demonstrating elegant and intricate musicianship; She is also a fine singer, with a cool, laid-back style, fronting a seasoned, four-man Afrobeat group.

Sona Jobarteh has won over audiences all over the world with her captivating voice and catchy melodies bringing messages about the issues that she champions — cultural identity, gender, love and respect, whilst remaining utterly faithful to her Gambian heritage.

韋斯利．約瑟�Westley Joseph 鼓 Drums

韋斯利．約瑟四歲開始彈奏手碟，其後繼續學習不同樂器，包括鼓、牧童笛、小提琴、低音結他、單簧管和鋼琴，但

最讓他著迷的是鋼鼓，尤其是套鼓。約瑟以倫敦為基地，以自由音樂人的身份與不同音樂人合作，這讓他得以接觸各

種音樂風格和類型。他多年來足跡遍及眾多國家，亦與音樂風格各異、來自不同領域的著名藝人和樂手合作和灌錄作

品。

Westley Joseph started out from the tender age of four playing the steel pans, he then went into playing the drums, recorder, violin, bass guitar, clarinet and piano. But it was the steel drums and especially the drum kit which he found himself being drawn towards. Making his living as a successful freelance musician based in London has allowed him to perform in all different musical styles and genres. He has toured extensively over the years and played alongside and recorded with many well-renowned artists and musicians in many musical styles and fields.

戴歷克．莊遜�Derek Johnson 結他 Acoustic Guitar

戴歷克．莊遜於英國出生，父母原籍牙買加。他長期投身藝術工作，精通結他、高階鼓樂編程、世界各地的笛子和低

音電結他。他也是一位資深作曲家和唱片製作人。莊遜早於十六歲便參與錄音製作，與享譽英國的樂團�Loose Ends 合

作。多年來合作過的國際藝人超過三百七十位，包括Gregory Isaacs、Oumou Sangaré、Leon Ware和素娜．祖巴

特等。同時他亦為電影和劇場作曲。

Born in the UK to Jamaican parents, Derek Johnson (aka Musicalist) has been pro-active in the arts most of his life. His primary instruments are guitar, advanced drum-programming, global flutes and electric bass. He is also a seasoned composer and record producer. He started his recording career in 1981 at 16 with the celebrated UK group Loose Ends. Over the years, as well as composing for film and theatre, he has worked with over 370 international artists, including Gregory Isaacs, Oumou Sangaré, Leon Ware and Sona Jobarteh.

馬馬朵．薩爾�Mamadou Sarr 敲擊 Percussion

馬馬朵．薩爾祖籍塞內加爾，現居於倫敦。他是一位才華橫溢的表演者，精通非洲金貝鼓、非洲低音鼓、沙巴爾和葫

蘆類敲擊樂器等，亦演奏木箱鼓與康加鼓等。他經常與享譽國際的塞內加爾藝人巴雅巴．馬爾、素娜．祖巴特、Mumford�

and�Sons、Nuru�Kane和他的樂隊Baye�Fall�Gnawa等合作。2013年，薩爾獲總統代表團邀請，為首次到訪塞內加爾

的時任美國總統奧巴馬與夫人米歇爾表演。

Currently based in London, but originally from Senegal, Mamadou Sarr is an exceptionally talented performer. He specialises in djembe, djun djun, sabar and calabash percussion traditions, and also performs with caxon and congas. He has performed with numerous internationally acclaimed artists, including Baaba Maal, Sona Jobarteh, the Grammy Award winning British band Mumford and Sons, Nuru Kane and his band the Baye Fall Gnawa. He had been invited by the presidential delegation to perform for Barack and Michelle Obama when they made their inaugural visit to Senegal in 2013.

安迪．麥連是一位多才多藝的音樂人，在國際樂壇巡迴演出、舉辦音樂會和灌錄作品逾三十年。除了演出，他亦為多

位藝人創作及製作各類音樂作品，作品涵蓋不同類型，計有騷靈、雷鬼、dub、放克、嘻哈、high�life、卡里普索、蘇卡、索

卡斯、Afrobeat、迴響貝斯、英國倫敦地下樂、流行及搖滾、爵士、福音及古典。他不但是位出色的低音結他手，也

是多位知名國際藝人的音樂總監及／或製作人。

A versatile musician with over 30 years of international touring, gigging and recording experience, Andi McLean generally divides his time between performing and studio work, regularly writing and producing a wide range of music for a number of artists across genres which include soul, reggae, dub, funk, hip-hop, West African high life, calypso, soca, soukous, Afrobeat, dub step, grime, pop and rock, jazz, gospel and classical. He has been the bassist of choice, musical director and/or producer for a number of prominent international artists.
