Session Descriptions

This interactive session will provide both research and clinical trainees with an opportunity to learn first-hand about non-academic scientific careers in the government and private sector. An expert panel will discuss their career paths as well as how they have transitioned and succeeded outside of academia.

From academic applications to interviews to tenure, learn what it takes to land your first academic position and succeed. A panel of two recent hires and two former academic search committee members, including basic scientists and clinician scientists, will discuss what it takes to succeed in this competitive job market. This session is open to both research and clinical trainees interested in pursuing an academic research career.

Publications are an objective indicator of success. They help build your CV, get appointments and tenure at Canada’s major academic institutions. This workshop, led by a panel of current journal editors, will provide novel insight into the peer review process, how to determine authorship, strategies to improve manuscript writing and publication success rates. This session is open to both research and clinical trainees.

This year’s beginner cardiac surgery skills lab will cover basic coronary and vascular anastomosis techniques. Trainees will learn how to perform aortotomy closure, proximal and distal coronary anastomoses on porcine models. There will be ample hands-on opportunity and a good trainee-to-expert ratio. Instructions will be tailored to the technical skill level of each participant.

*This workshop is designed for junior cardiac surgery residents. However, medical students and cardiology trainees are more than welcome to join.

SurgicalSkills:Advanced* MitralValveRepair: Hands-onwiththeMasters

Drs. Jean-François Légaré, Michael Chu, Denis Bouchard, and Michel Pellerin

14:20 – 16:20

This year we are privileged to have a number of master surgeons proctoring the advanced skills workshop. Each trainee will be able to rotate through two stations, one hour each, where they will learn the principles of mitral valve repair. There will be ample hands-on opportunity and a good trainee-to-expert ratio. During this workshop, you will gain experience with different approaches to the mitral valve, including exposure and various repair techniques using chords, resection and primary repair.

*This workshop is designed for senior cardiac surgery trainees.

ECLS:ECMOandVADs

Drs. Dave Nagpal, Dimitris Kalavrouziotis, and Rakesh Arora

09:10 – 11:20

Are you fascinated by ECMO and VADs? These mechanical circulatory assist devices are re-shaping the types of cardiac patients that we will be taking care of in the future. Learn the indications of when you should use these mechanical circulatory supports, what your contraindications may be, and the complications that can arise from their use. Drop in to examine how a real life ECMO circuit can impact cardiopulmonary physiology and learn to appreciate the many options of VADs that are available to us.

PacemakersandDefibrillators

Drs. Mehrdad Golian, Kaja Konieczny, and Ciorsti MacIntyre

14:10 – 15:10

Do you want to learn how to interrogate and program PPMs and AICDs? Well, here’s your chance for an introduction to some common case scenarios of oversensing, undersensing, loss of capture, loss of output, and appropriateness of shock delivery. This is what you really need to know when you’re on call! Trainees will also gain an overview of indications, contraindications, and potential complications that can arise with these cardiac devices.

IABPandImpella Drs. Dave Nagpal and Rohit Singal

15:20 – 16:20

What do you do when a patient comes in with cardiogenic shock from an acute infarct or myocarditis? How can you improve your patient’s poor hemodynamic status? Learn how the intra-aortic balloon pump and Impella devices can improve cardiac physiology to help overcome cardiac failure using high-fidelity simulation. Also, learn to appreciate the indications, contraindications and complications that may arise with these mechanical circulatory assist devices.

SpeedMentoring*

Drs. Sharon Straus, Lisa Welikovitch, and William McIntyre

09:10 – 11:20

Interested in mentorship?

Join us at the new Speed Mentorship event! This is a full morning session starting with a one hour discussion about tips and challenges with the mentor-mentee relationship. Use your new skills in the second hour where you will get a chance to meet mentors from across the country. Each participant will be matched with mentors based on individual interests and needs. The goal of this session will be to set a forum for people to meet and build long-term relationships.

Residents as Teachers

Dr. Kenny Wong

14:10 – 15:10

How does one become a great teacher?

Whether you are teaching students, residents, or colleagues, certain skills and approaches are common amongst great teachers. In this session, Dr. Kenny Wong will speak on his teaching experiences. Also share tips and helpful advice for trainees interested in becoming teachers.

BuildingyourBrand

Dr. Adam McKillop

15:20 – 16:20

Why do I need a brand you ask?

Like it or not, you already have a brand. Your brand is how your patients, colleagues, and the community perceive your positions and abilities. Our branding expert will provide tips on making conscious choices on how you represent yourself in order to better build credibility, improve patient satisfaction, and share expertise.

CommunityPractice

Drs. Heather Warren and Danielle Leddy

09:10 – 10:10

Most trainees have little exposure to community cardiology, furthermore the academic vs. community divide is fraught with misperceptions. We have recent graduates who now practice in the community to share their experiences. We will also provide insight into how and why they chose community practice and highlight their journey in finding and obtaining their new jobs (vs. veteran grads).

Transitioning to IndependentPractice Ms. Marie-Josée Hamel

10:20 – 11:20

This session will feature recent graduates and early career clinicians and researchers, sharing their experiences on getting a job, transitioning to practice, and other ‘intangible’ advice.

FutureofCardiovascular Medicine:NovelMedical Devices Dr. Anthony Tang

14:10 – 15:10

Fitness devices can now monitor your heart rate continuously, and mobile devices can record your electrocardiogram. How will these new technologies change the care of cardiac patients? How can we harness the data from these new devices in research? This session will discuss the recent advances in cardiovascular devices, and how these technologies will shape clinical cardiology and cardiovascular research.

FutureofCardiovascular Medicine:NovelSurgical Techniques

Drs. Bob Kiaii and Robert Boone

15:20 – 16:20

How will novel surgical techniques shape the field of cardiovascular surgery? This session will discuss the new technologies in minimally-invasive and robotic surgery. In addition, will highlight new interventional techniques (i.e. percutaneous mitral procedures).
