WHAT IS WATER SOFTENING?

Softening is a process used to removeundesired minerals from water,mainly Calcium and Magnesium.

For this process to occur, watermust flow through a resin bed,where the ion exchange takes place.

SOFTENING CYCLE During the softening cycle, calcium and magnesium ions contained in the wateradhere to the resin causing sodium ions to be released in order to restore equilibrium.The degree of efficiency during the process depends on the type of resin applied.

The water intake is driven towards the resin tank were it softens as it flows downward through the resin.The water then ascends from the bottom of the resin tank and is driven to the outlet valve.

STANDARD RESIN

During the ion exchange process, the resinretains calcium and magnesium ionstemporarily, releasing sodium ions in return.

The spheres of the standard resin have anaverage diameter of 0,6 mm with great sizedifferences between spheres.Standard resin has limited performance.

HIGH FLOW RESIN

The latest innovation is the HIGH FLOW RESINthat allows maximun efficiency and performance.

Its average diameter of 0,3 mm and itshomogenous size create a greater contact surface.

The peak flow rate of the system increases fourfoldgenerating water and salt savings of up to 20% and15% respectively.

REGENERATION EXPLAINED

The softening cycle saturates the resinwith Calcium and Magnesium ions. In order to restore initial properties aregeneration cycle must be performed.

REGENERATION CYCLE During the regeneration cycle, brine flows through the resin bed exchanging calciumand magnesium ions for sodium ions.The resin recovers its softening capacity. Thisprocess will be more or less efficient depending on the chosen regeneration type.

The combination of both high flow resin and up flow regeneration increases performance of the systemand reduces water and salt consumption during the regeneration cycle.

DOWN FLOW

The flow direction in the softening cycle is downward, so the upper part of the resin bed is the most saturated.The regenerant circulates throught the resin bed in the same direction at the service flow, from top to bottom,thereby dragging the highest concentration of impurities from the upper resin bed throughout the tank.This makes the quantity of water, brine and time needed to complete the process effectively very high.

UP FLOW

The flow directions during the service cycle and regeneration cycle are the opposite: The flow direction in the regeneration cycle isupward, so it produces a back wash that spands the resin bed, removes the upper level impurities in a direct way and regeneratesthe resin in an effective way. With this process, savings of up to 60% in water and up to 50% in regenerant can be obtained.

The brine is suctionedand driven through thevalve towards the bottomof the tank, where it flowsthrough the resin bed untilit reaches the outlet.

RESIN VOLUME

Use of the high flow resin allows reducing the size of the system, minimises regeneration time and increases savings in water and salt consumption, as you can see in the below example.The features of the equipment have been obtained considering household requirements and the chosen system type.
