Amelia Viars LATI Spring 2015 Eating Local: Community Supported Agriculture “Attendees will learn about the local food economy, how they can be a vital part of it, and meet some of the farmers who produce locally. A question and answer session will follow. Light refreshments will be provided. “ Cecil County Public Library’s mission states that we provide “provide lifelong educational and cultural opportunities and resources for all, promoting individual and community success.” This program provides the opportunity for local businesses to share their stories with community members. It also educates people about community supported agriculture and informs them of healthy alternatives for a diet of foods that are shipped from miles away or pre-packaged and processed. This program is not a promotional for local businesses, instead it is an opportunity for them to talk about how a CSA is operated, and it gives the attendees a chance to meet local farmers who may be growing what they are feeding their families now or in the future. It is also an opportunity for people who are starting a farm or considering it to hear from experienced growers. Agriculture is the largest commercial industry in Maryland and in 2014, 32% of the state’s land was used for farming. There have been several new CSA’s started in the county during the past several years. This program is on trend with new businesses in the Cecil County and addresses the growing concerns that people in the community, and nationwide, have with knowing where their food comes from and supporting local businesses. For this program, we partner with local farmers. They don’t have to own a CSA; they can be contributing to the local food economy through farmers’ markets, a roadside stand, etc. I would also like to include a nutritionist, who approaches questions from a different perspective and understanding. It is organized as a round table discussion, with the speakers sitting along the front of the room and the attendees seated in facing rows. A

It is organized as a round table discussion, with the speakers sitting along the front of the room and the attendees seated in facing rows. A moderator also introduces questions which the presenters received beforehand. They will also have the opportunity to introduce themselves and their work, and field questions from the audience. This program is evaluated by attendance statistics, audience participation, and through program evaluations that we ask attendees to fill out. I have organized a program like this before, and it is a possibility that this one, or something similar, could be implemented in the future.
