R & L – TAKE CARE! Not only is the difference between R and L hard for Japanese speakers to make, it is also hard for you to hear. Look at the diagrams on the blackboard that show the differing tongue positions for R and L. Now repeat after me and try to make a difference between the following words: 1 river liver 2 wrong long 3 crows close 4 brew blue 5 crime climb 6 correct collect Question: Listen to me, and circle the word you think you hear.
Very often a mistake with L and R can cause problems as it creates a new word in English. Sometimes this new word has a different meaning, so an English speaker can quickly work out what is being said. For example: free flea frog flog reef leaf royal loyal cram clam Question: What do the words in bold 太字 mean?
Sometimes, however, the new word is very common. For example: 1 grass glass 2 road load 3 rain lane 4 row low 5 raw law 6 pray play 7 breed bleed Question: Listen to me, and circle the word you think you hear. Today’s tongue twister 早口言葉: How can a clam clan cram in a clean cream can? ハマグリの一族は奇麗なクリーム色の空き缶の中に果たしてどうやって押し込めるのか。

TH: q & ð Although the q and ð sounds are not the most common in English, they do unfortunately occur in some of the most frequent words in the language. Look where my tongue is and repeat the q sound after me. Now try ð (= q”). Repeat after me the following very frequent English words: the then this that these those they them their there other though than thing three thus Question: Which of the above have the voiceless sound 無声音 q and which the voiced sound 有声音 ð? Write the appropriate symbol (q or ð) next to each word above.
Usually a mistake with th can be understood by a native speaker of English because the meaning of the new word is nearly always completely different. For example: 1 think sink 2 thin sin 3 thing sing 4 theme seem 5 thaw saw 6 thick sick 7 thigh sigh 8 thumb sum 9 thimble symbol Question: What do the words highlighted in bold above mean?
Some th words can be particularly difficult for Japanese students to pronounce when they are in consonant clusters.子音連結 Let’s practice the following very tricky words by repeating after me: fifth cloth 布・布巾 clothe 着せる ( cross 渡る、怒っている、十字 close 閉める ) sixth cloths 布巾の複数 clothes 衣服等 ( crows カラスの複数 claws かぎ爪 ) twelfth
Finally, today’s tongue twister: The sixth sick sheik’s sixth sheep’s sick 六人目の病気の首長には、六番目の羊が病気だ

SPORTS & GAMES In Japanese, when you play a game or a sport, you use する or やる. Very easy! However, in English, it’s not so easy. There are 4 rules to remember: Rule 1 If it is a sport that uses a ball or something similar, for example a shuttlecock or a puck, then
use the verb play:
He plays golf Can you play volleyball? Rule 2 If it is a GAME, then use the verb play: They like playing poker We played pachinko last week Rule 3 If it is a MARTIAL ART, then use the verb do: She does judo I can do karate Rule 4 ANYTHING ELSE, uses the name of the sport as a verb: スポーツの名前を動詞化する I ski She skated yesterday
With your partner, write down the name of three new sports or games in the table below in rows 1, 2 and 3. Write down also the place where they are played, any equipment needed to play them, and which verb the sport uses. Three examples (A – C) are already given.
SPORT/GAME PLACE EQUIPMENT NEEDED PLAY/DO/ OWN NAME
A soccer pitch boots, ball, goals play B pachinko pachinko parlour money, cigarettes, no brain play C skiing in the mountains skis, stocks, skiwear, goggles ski 1 2 3
4 5 6 7
Then interview some classmates and write down four more sports or games in rows 4 - 7. Some questions you might ask are: What is the sport? Where do you play ______ ? What do you need to ____________?

B & V – TAKE CARE!
Look at me and watch the differing lip positions for B and V. Now repeat after me and try to make a difference between the following words: 1 bat vat 2 bet vet 3 best vest 4 berry very 5 Bulgarian ブルガリア人 vulgarian 卑俗な人 6 TB 肺結核 TV 7 boat vote
Sometimes, a mistake with B and V can be a problem as it creates a new word in English. Mostly, this new word is not very common or has a totally different meaning. For example: 1 bigger vigour
2 ban van 3 bending machine 曲げる機械 vending machine
4 curb curve 5 verb verve
6 dub dove 7 bowel vowel
Question: What do the words highlighted in bold mean? Finally, today’s tongue twister: Vincent vowed vengeance very vehemently

OTHER DIFFICULT PRONUNCIATIONS So far we have looked at R, L, V and TH. There still remain, however, three more English pronunciations with which Japanese students tend to have problems.
1. SHI ~ SI The reason why Japanese students find it difficult to differentiate these two sounds is obvious: the Japanese language has only shi but never si. Repeat the si sound after me. Differentiating between them is very very important as problems might arise! Repeat the following words after me: 1 ship sip 2 sheep seep 3 sheet seat 4 she sea / see / C 5 shin sin 6 sheen seen Question: What do the words highlighted in bold mean?
2. YE & YI The modern Japanese language has sounds for ya, yo and yu (や, よ and ゆ), but not for ye or yi. Repeat the following words after me: 1 year ear 2 yeast east 3 yes S 4 yearn earn 5 yell L
3. WO & WU Japanese speakers often have problems with wo and wu. Try repeating the following words after me: would / wood woman wolf won’t wool wound 怪我 Try these four minimal pairs:最小対立語 woe 悲哀 : owe 支払う義務がある war : oar woos 求愛する : ooze にじみ出る woken : oaken オーク材の
Finally, today’s tongue twister: How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? もしマーモットは薪が投げられれば、何本くらい投げられるだろうか
