Celebrate Canada… and volunteersOn July 1, we will celebrate the anniversary of a
country which we have worked hard to build. Hundreds of thousands of Canadians will celebrate from one ocean to another. What’s more, dozens of aboriginal communities and ethnic groups will reach out to other Canadians and celebrate their contribution to the cultural diversity of this great country. Apart from the national celebrations, there are also the thousands of volunteers without whom all this would be totally impossible in a country as vast as ours. This year, their great work should be highlighted.
Did you know that organizations, with the support of Canadian Heritage, take local and provincial initiatives under their wing? These
organizations are the“Celebrate Canada Committees”. Their support is as varied as the initiatives are. Every territory and province has one of these committees, which works in concert with the federal
government to ensure the distribution of funds. These funds enable large scale celebrations as much as neighbourhood celebrations in which you will soon be participating.
If you would also like to get involved, you should know that provincial, regional and local committees often recruit people right up to the last minute. There is no better way of paying homage to those who give their time to make everything a great success than by becoming a volunteer yourself. Visit the Canadian Heritage Web site (www.pch.gc.ca) to find the address of the regional office which can put you in contact with the various “Celebrate Canada Committees“.
The smooth running of Canada Day celebrations requires a lot of volunteers.

Did you know that, as part of the festivities surrounding Canada Day, young people aged 5 to 18 have the possibility, year after year, to show off their
artistic talents by participating in the Canada Day Poster Challenge? Every year, the Celebrate Canada Committee invites young Canadians to illustrate their pride in Canada and in being Canadian, by designing a theme-based poster which leaves a lot of room open for creative inspiration. For 2008, the Committee suggested the theme: My Canada Today! It’s, therefore, through the eyes of these young people that we will have the opportunity of looking at today’s Canada. The Committee puts forward suggestions regarding the theme of the activity. Then a jury chooses a total of 13 provincial and territorial finalists who will win a trip to Ottawa between June 29 and July 1, at which time they will have the opportunity of participating in the celebrations on Parliament Hill. What’s more, an entry is chosen among all of the finalists and the winning poster will be the official poster of Celebrate Canada! The Canadian public will have the chance to admire all these creations from June to September at the Canadian Children’s Museum at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau.Over the next few months, visitwww.pch.gc.ca/special/canada to learn about the theme for 2009 and to encourage your children to participate in this challenge, which requires both their talent and their pride of living in Canada! Budding artists are invited to create a poster
representing their vision of Canada.
