Celebrate International Credit Union Day: The Authentic DifferenceFor more than 160 years, credit unions have put people before profit.

In the 1850s, hard times hit Germany, and people turned to each other for help. They removed small savings from under mattresses and started making reasonably priced loans to one another. These early credit unions were the model for all the credit unions that followed: not-for-profit, democratically controlled and community oriented. The principles that guided them then, guide credit unions today.

In the 1920s, Edward Filene took cooperative finance to the next level in Boston, as a means of lifting working people out of debt and creating a better life. On January 17, 1927, the Credit Union League of Massachusetts celebrated the first official credit union holiday. January 17th is the birthday of Benjamin Franklin, America’s “Apostle of Thrift,” who credit union founders believed to symbolize the purpose and spirit of credit unions.

During this time, the U.S. credit union movement was new and spreading. In response to the Great Depression, new credit unions were being formed to fill the void left by shuttered banks.

The U.S. Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and CUNA Mutual Insurance Society initiated a new national Credit Union Day celebration in 1948. The third Thursday of October was set aside as the national day of observance. This occasion brought members together to promote the credit union philosophy nationally and reflect upon credit union achievements and history. Members raised funds for the movement and paid homage to loyal supporters and pioneers.

The World Council of Credit Unions, established in 1971, assists credit union movements and supports their development around the world. World Council observed the first International Credit Union (ICU) Day more than 30 years ago, and continues to endorse global celebrations. The credit union movement has grown to more than 217 million members in 101 countries. Celebrate the credit union difference during this year’s Member Appreciation Day – October 20, 2016.

Looking Out For Your InterestsThere are many people at your Credit Union looking out for your interests. One group in particular has the primary purpose of doing just that. It’s your Credit Union Supervisory Committee. The Supervisory Committee is comprised of volunteers who are appointed by the Board of Directors to represent Telco Community Credit Union members. The Supervisory Committee monitors that operations are conducted in accordance with governing rules and regulations and assets are properly administered. In other words, the committee is responsible for ensuring that members’ funds and interests are protected at all times. To accomplish this goal, the Supervisory Committee performs a variety of specific duties, including: • Overseeing an annual independent audit of the Credit Union • Reviewing internal accounting systems and controls • Ensuring that all policies and procedural guidelines are followedThe current Telco Supervisory Committee members are Bruce Sisk, Chairman, Bill Gregory, Vice Chair, Jesse Searcy, Director, James Penland, Secretary, and Javan Johnson, Member. Working as volunteers these Credit Union members commit their time and expertise, and exhibit a dedication to the Credit Union cause that we can all be proud of.

Skyland BranchThe Skyland Team recently held a bake sale at their branch to raise money for the Telco Community Credit Union Charity. The TCCU Charity raises money throughout the year by selling raffle tickets, candy bars, nuts and bake sales. All TCCU Charity donations are then used to help local families in need. These donations allow for us to support the community and families in

need. Each teammate brought in a variety of goodies, such as cookies, brownies, cake balls, etc, a thumbs up for our Skyland Branch!

Driving Hazards:Fall is a great time to catch beautiful vistas on the road. It also signals a time of change for driving conditions. Plan on giving yourself extra time on your commute and daily travels during the fall. Here’s a list of hazards to be mindful of while traveling:Back-to-School Traffic – More cars and more kids are on the road. Watch for increased traffic from pedestrians.Rain – Precipitation can be hazardous at any time of the year. If it hasn’t rained in a while, oil and dirt can accumulate on the road, creating an extra layer on the road surface, and reducing tire grip.Leaves – While fall foliage is colorful and pretty to look at, watch the roads when it rains or after, as wet leaves are very slippery and prevent tires from having optimal traction. Fog – Cold fall mornings can limit your visibility from the presence of fog. Use your low beams instead of your high beams for better visibility. Frost – As temperatures begin to drop in some regions, this can lead to morning frost and patches of ice on the roads. Be mindful of bridges, overpasses and shaded road areas.Sun Glare – Sun glare is a big problem for drivers during the fall because of where the sun is located in the sky. Glare can seriously impact your field of vision and temporarily blind you.

Prepping Your Vehicle Fall is the perfect time to prep your vehicle for the colder months. One of the best ways to get your vehicle in top shape is to consult the owner’s manual and make sure all maintenance has been performed. Recalls can be checked on your auto resource, and major preventative maintenance can be taken care of by the qualified mechanics at your dealership. Create a checklist of what needs to be reviewed: Tire tread, battery life, exhaust system leaks, oil change and heater/defroster. One overlooked area: windshield wipers. They are roughly $15 or more each; look for the beam-blade wipers, as they work well in snow and ice versus the bracket-style wiper.

A low- or no-down payment, a longer-term loan, and a vehicle that rapidly depreciates in value in the first two years can cause you to be “upside down” in your car loan. The term means you owe more for the car than it is worth. It’s not unusual for a buyer to be upside down in a car loan the first couple of years into a five- or six-year loan.Consumer experts recommend making a down payment of 20% or more and financing for no longer than four years to avoid being upside down. Not everyone can do this. Some alternatives are: ◆ Don’t finance a car for more months than you think you want to own it ◆ Make the biggest down payment you can ◆ Choose a shorter-term loan if possible ◆ Buy a vehicle that will hold its value longerIf you find that you’re upside down in a loan, experts advise holding onto the car as long as you can--at least until the amount left on the loan matches the car’s trade-in value. If you need to get rid of it, try selling it yourself before taking it to trade in. If possible, accelerate your loan payments to avoid being upside down in your new loan.
