HOW THE 13TH AVENUE / MLK RENEW SCHOOL SCHOLARS
CELEBRATED THE WEEK OF RESPECT
OCTOBER 1 – 5 Respect means using good manners; being courteous and polite, speaking to others in a kind voice; using polite body language. Respect means showing consideration toward others; honoring other people’s wants, needs, ideas, differences, beliefs, customs, and heritage. Respect means caring for living things and earth; obeying rules, laws, and customs of your family, faith, community, and country.
Miss Siliato, guidance counselor, recited affirmations similar to the above declaration each day during the morning announcements.
Monday, October 1: “Don’t rely on someone else for your happiness and self worth. Only you can be responsible for that. If you can’t love and respect yourself – no one else will be able to make that happen. Accept who you are – completely; the good and the bad – and make changes as YOU see it – not because you think someone else wants you to.”
Tuesday, October 2: “Learning how to be kind to ourselves, learning how to respect ourselves, is important. The reason it’s important is that, fundamentally, when we look into our own hearts and begin to discover what is confused and what is brilliant, what is bitter and what is sweet, it isn’t just ourselves that we’re discovering. We’re discovering the universe.”
Wednesday, October 3: “Respect your efforts, respect yourself. Self-respect leads to self-discipline. When you have both firmly under your belt, that’s real power.”
Thursday, October 4: “Respect people’s feelings. Even if it does not mean anything to you, it could mean everything to them.”
Friday, October 5: “Respect your fellow human being, treat them fairly, disagree with them honestly, enjoy their friendship, explore your thoughts about one another candidly, work together for a common goal and help one another achieve it.”

A NOTE FROM THE GUIDANCE COUNSELOR
13th Avenue / MLK Renew School recognizes the significance of character education and respecting differences in creating an exemplary school culture. During the first week of October, our school engaged in activities that spread the message of respect. Although the “Week of Respect” is over, it is just the beginning of the anti-bullying and respect expectations all year round. Scholars must show respect every day. Kindness to others does not go unnoticed, making the right choice is admirable, and stepping in to help another when everyone else turns their back is honored. Each scholar is capable of attaining achievement through knowledge, scholarship, leadership, and empowerment. In order to accomplish these four pillars of success, one must honor those differences which make us unique, display dignity and humanity, and work diligently to be their best self every day.
