CELEBRATING BLACK HISTORY MONTH The month of February is designated annually as national Black History Month, also called African American History Month, in celebration of the contributions to our nation made by people of African American decent, and pays tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society. The commemoration was first established by American historian Carter G. Woodson as Black History Week in 1925 and, for many years, the second week of February was set aside for this celebration to coincide with the birthdays of abolitionist/editor Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln. In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded to a month. Since then, U.S. presidents have proclaimed February as National African American History Month. Wallace State Community College is celebrating Black History Month with a number of events and activities for students, faculty, staff and the community.
