Coronado Playhouse is committed to giving back to the local community, beyond offering quality entertainment, by using its public platform to help those in need. During Sugar, we are proud to partner with Mama’s Kitchen.

The cast and crew of Sugar are raising money and awareness for Mama’s Kitchen, San Diego County’s food delivery service providing nutrition support to men, women, and children affected by AIDS or cancer who are vulnerable to hunger. A Note from the Playhouse - Member Supported Theatre

Coronado Playhouse is celebrating our 70th year! Since 1946, Coronado Playhouse, the oldest, longest-running community theatre in San Diego County, has been dedicated to serving the community and providing top-quality entertainment.

As we start our 2016 season, I am amazed by how far we’ve come in the past ten years I have been part of the Playhouse. During my time here, Coronado Playhouse has grown from a small following to a very large base of season subscribers, members and patrons. It’s been wonderful to see the return of the community to our theatre. From returning and new patrons, to being a sought-after place where people want to be part of our productions, we are truly proud of being the community’s theatre.

As we count our accomplishments we need also to be grateful for all the contributions of everyone along the way. Many people give freely and have made sacrifices to better the Playhouse. Paying forward in kindness, these people are the ones that have made us great.

We consider the Playhouse to be like a family; and we welcome you to the clan! We have made many lasting friends and have witnessed lots of special events like birthdays, anniversaries and even wedding proposals and weddings at our theatre.

We are strong because we have stuck together in the good times and bad. And we send our love to a good friend, who always has our love and support, as well as a lot of people behind him.

In closing, our board is pleased with the lineup we have in store for you in this 70th anniversary year. We hope to astound you with Sugar, and the rest of our season. We are here to amuse you, to delight you and to keep the magic of theatre alive for many more generations to come.

With love & appreciation,

Katy Skyrud and the Board of Coronado Playhouse

Sugar, the musical version of the iconic movie, Some Like it Hot follows the story-line almost verbatim…except adding song and dance! Though this show is not well known, it was originally produced on Broadway in the early 70s. It was short lived, revived again in the early 90s for another short stint. I’m not quite sure why. I blame mostly the title. Had it been called, Some Like it Hot – The Musical I believe it would have had a lot more traction. I truly love this show! The advantage to mounting a production such as this written by stellar Broadway veterans of their time; book by Peter Stone, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by Bob Merrill, is that there’s very little reference on

line. There are only a few short clips of other productions mounted and I found myself creatively free to produce my own vision of what I saw in the script and heard from the written score. Thus, the Sugar you are about to see is one that comes as if it’s never been done before. A very endearing, fun, sparkly, toe-tapping version with hints of the nostalgia of Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. This, along with the back-drop of the Coronado Del (a resort placed in Florida…) I’ve had much to work with, much to draw on and much joy of putting together a piece that I, along with a very talented and dedicated cast, are so proud to present.
