Non-Profit: We Care for Animals

We Care for Animals (WCFA) is a foster-based cat and dog rescue serving Mesquite, Bunkerville and the Arizona Strip. It is based in Mesquite and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. As a strictly volunteer-based organization, without paid staff, volunteers work out of their homes.

The dedicated foster families provide a secure and loving environment for homeless cats and dogs until adoption. The majority of the pets accepted into foster care come directly from the public. Many animals are from owners who are ill or who have passed.

The organization relies on donations from the community to fund their operations. For the last three years, their large fundraiser has been Muttigans, a popular golf tournament at the Wolf Creek Golf Course. Because of covid-19 and current restrictions, it is uncertain at this time whether they will be able to have this important fundraiser. With that in mind, they rely on the community more than ever for monetary donations.

Donors make it possible to provide WCFA foster pets with quality veterinary care such as spays & neuters, vaccines, dentals, blood work, radiographs, medication, micro chips and any surgeries that may be required. All of the adoptable pets are spayed or neutered, brought current on vaccinations and micro chipped.

Last year WCFA placed 70 cats and dogs, 44 of which came from Mesquite, 17 from the Arizona Strip and the rest from other locations. They also provide spay/neuter assistance for limited income pet owners in Mesquite, Bunkerville and communities in the Arizona Strip.

WCFA has provided humane Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) services for community cats for many years. About four years ago, with the assistance of Best Friends Animal Society and One More Chance Companion Animal Tender Support (CATS) in St. George, they TNR’d about 80 cats in a problem area in the Arizona Strip. At the same time at another location 42 cats were TNR’d. TNR is the humane way to control the feral cat population and stop the endless cycle of breeding.

WCFA has a small pet food bank for needy pets. Last year the pet food bank assisted 67 families, 102 dogs and 58 cats including ferals. It provided more than 6,200 lbs of dry pet food and 500 plus cans of cat and dog food. More information can be had by phone at 702-346-3326 (voicemail), or mail at P. O. Box 3028, Mesquite NV 89024. WCFA adoptable pets are listed on its website at wecareforanimals.org. Follow them on Facebook at facebook.com/wecareforanimalsmesquitenv

In the Spotlight: Linda and Don Frady

Don and Linda have been together for 16 years. They met online. Between them they have 1 son, 3 daughters and 5 grandchildren. They moved to Sun City Mesquite in 2013 from Salt Lake City, Utah to escape the winter and traffic.

Don grew up in Rock Springs, WY. He worked for the US Postal Service for 37 years and retired in 2007. Before retirement, he rode his mountain bike and motorcycle on the trails of Wyoming.

He was a Certified Rescue Scuba Diver and an active member of the Wyoming Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Volunteer Search and Rescue Unit. He served with the US Army, during the Vietnam era, assigned to the 23rd Engineer Battalion, and was an Operation’s Sergeant for the Division En-gineer’s Office of the 3rd Armored Division.

Linda is Alabama born and transplanted to Utah and Wyoming. She worked in the telecommunications industry for 35 years and retired from USWEST/Qwest Communications. Her last position was Business Office/Project Manager for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. She worked as a consultant with Verizon Communications until 2008 and worked with The Hawaiian Telephone Company in Honolulu, HI for 3 months. She volunteered with Girls Scouts for 39 years, working at the troop level; volunteered as President of the Board of Directors of the Wasatch Mountain Club, Salt Lake City, UT, for 25 years; and the Board of Directors of Cottonwood Heights City Council, UT for 10 years. She enjoyed hiking the Wasatch Mountains and rafting Utah with the Wasatch Mountain Club and loved camping trips to Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon.

Before moving to Mesquite, they enjoyed skiing at Brianhead, UT and the Wasatch Mountain ski resorts, mountain biking in Canyonlands National Park, hiking and exploring many national parks, including a 3-night stay at Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon.

Life in Sun City Mesquite is much more relaxed than their previous life-style. Here they enjoy the Sun City putting course, golfing-occasionally, riding their e-bicycles and RV camping. They belong to the Trivia Club, Bocce Club and Bowling Club. Linda belongs to the Cactus Needles Quilt-ing Club, the Rojos Som-breros Club, Girlfriends Shopping Club and is a member of the Commu-nications Committee. Don plays billiards on Saturday mornings.

Simple watering techniques can help your landscape plants survive the extreme August heat.

Water in the morning. The best time to water is between 5 and 10 a.m. The evaporation rate is low and temperatures are cool giving plants time to soak up moisture before the hot sun or strong winds evaporate the moisture. Watering in the evening encourages plant fungal disease like mildew. If you must water in the evening, allow enough time for the foliage to dry before nightfall.

Encourage plants to send their roots down into the soil by watering infrequently and deep-ly. In summer, most plants and lawns need at least one inch of water per week for deep roots to develop. Deeply water trees, shrubs and perennials every five to seven days. Watering too frequently may encourage plants to develop shallow roots. Under watering causes drought stress, shallow roots and unhealthy plants.

Hand check soil moisture. Use your finger to feel the soil for moisture. When the soil feels slightly cool but not wet, add water. Or check for dampness by digging down six to eight inches. If the soil is not wet, irrigate longer. If the soil is muddy, it is too wet.

Choose the best method to water. Use soaker hoses, trickle hoses or drip systems to soak soils slowly to avoid water runoff and waste water. They can decrease water usage by 70 percent.

Use mulch. Use bark particles and compost for mulch and nutrients. Use inorganic gravel to help cool the soil and retain moisture. Mulching flowerbeds conserves soil moisture, controls weeds and prevents erosion.

Use these simple tactics to conserve water and they can help you have beautiful healthy plants.

Welcome New Residents

Just a reminder that we are still only in phase 2 of the re-opening plan and the mandatory face covering rule is still in effect. A thanks to all homeowners for their understanding at this time. Our reservation program is not only to make sure that we do not exceed our capacities but would be used for contact tracking if a homeowner tests positive. Again, thank you for taking the time to make your reservations. Because of our recent wind storms some of our homeowners lost their trees and other landscaping elements. The trees are required for both the front and back yards and should be at least 6 feet tall with a diameter of 1 1/2 inches. No form is required for their replacement. Three other frequently discussed items are still a problem in the community. First, partially or fully open garage doors. For the safety of the community please keep your garage doors closed unless you are working around the house. If you are concerned about the heat in your garage remember you can place an A/C unit into that area. Speaking of A/C units please check your 15 gallon screening plant in front of your unit. This time of the year it is easy to lose this plant to either the heat or lack of water. Finally, limit your time parked in the community when you are using your RV for travel. As a courtesy remember you may park at the Pioneer Center as well. Just check in at the front desk for details.

During the dog days of summer, spending time outdoors is less appealing and possibly even dangerous for your pets. However, there are plenty of ways to provide indoor exercise via mental enrichment. Not only will brainwork tire out your pets, it will also help build their confidence.

For dogs, indoor enrichment is easily achieved through nosework. Find three or four cardboard boxes, large enough so they are able to put their heads into it. Place treats in the boxes and scatter them around the room or house, then let your dog try to find them. Once they get the hang of this exercise, you can make it more challenging by loosely closing the box flaps, making the boxes harder to find, or even hiding one box inside another.

You can also play indoor games with your canine, such as hide-and-seek, ball toss, catching bubbles, and tug-of-war. These games can be as much fun for you as they are for your dog.

As for cats, enrichment that aligns with their natural prey drive is most effective in keeping them engaged. Items that encourage chasing and pouncing are typically the most enjoyable for felines. They can easily be entertained by cardboard boxes, large paper bags, and crumpled-up pieces of paper.

If you’d like to be more involved in the process, both you and kitty can have a great time playing with wand-type toys that have strings, feathers and fabric strips attached. Another option is laser pointers; just make sure your cat eventually “catches” a toy or another object that the pointer indicates, otherwise it will get frustrated.

There are many toys available for purchase that provide indoor fun and games for your pets. Check locally or online for additional ideas.

Board of Directors

During these difficult times your Board has been working to keep our HOAs solid financially and strong for the future of this community. At the July Board meeting there was a presentation that re-enforced these goals by providing for the safety of our homeowners, preserving our assets and maintaining our 2020 budget. A quick summary includes the need for face coverings, reservations for activities as well as cleaning our facilities. We must maintain our contributions to reserves and continue ongoing fiscally prudent analysis. Our staff and facilities are following all Nevada state requirements and we thank our homeowners for their cooperation. The Board acknowledged the approvals of the new mirrors for the Fitness area, re-upholstering of the billiards stools, phase 1 and 2 COVID-19 plans and the need for face coverings as stated in Resolution 20-01. These items all were approved by the Board prior to this meeting. All of the recommendations from our homeowner based Finance Committee were approved during the meeting. These items included the continued program for our reserve funds CD rotation for the best outcome, acceptance of the 2019 budget audit and the move of excess funds from 2019 to reserve accounts. Additionally, the Board approved the reserve study for 2021, benches for the Fitness area, irrigation lines for Split Rail and a wind damage insurance claim. Our Pioneer Center renovation project continues ahead of schedule. Soon the carpet will arrive. Thus there may be a one or two day shutdown of the Fitness area to move the machines and replace the old carpet and mats. These closures will be sent out to homeowners as soon as the final schedule is available. Our new furniture will be here mid August for the final touch. A ribbon cutting is being planned by our Lifestyle staff to show off our new beautiful look! On a different subject the first natural gas homeowners have closed and moved into Tortoise Ridge. Thanks to our Lifestyle staff for finding new ways to keep our homeowners involved such as the apple pie and ice cream on July 4th that almost 400 homeowners enjoyed! Next Board meeting will be Tuesday, October 20 at 5 p.m. Join me for the August Coffee Chat on Friday, 8/7 at either 9 a.m. or 3 p.m. for more information and news.
