The Committee welcomes you to the 2020 Commonwealth Championship Sheepdog Trial, one of Australia’s Premier Sheepdog Trialling events.
The Commonwealth Championship Sheepdog Trials are affiliated with the
V.W.S.D.A. There are finals in all Commonwealth Championship events.

1st run will be on Friday afternoon 7th Feb 2020 Final run on Sunday 9th Feb 2020
WORKERS PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THE FOLLOWING
Modified course will be used First seven dogs in OPEN to compete in finals.
First six dogs in IMPROVER to compete in finals. First five dogs in NOVICE to compete in finals.
First six dogs in TransTasman to compete in finals.
The FARMERS TRIAL will be run SEPERATELY on Sun 2nd Feb 2020 commencing at 12 pm.
The NOVICE TRIAL will commence on Monday 3rd Feb 2020
BONNIE TRANS TASMAN TRIAL Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights under lights

Australian Dog of the Year
Each state is represented as follows NSW: Ritchies Finn is worked by Mick Hudson. Finn is 51/2 years old by Wondara Snap and Ritchies Meg. Finn has won a total of 13 Open Trials and has twice won Champion of Champions at the Nationals. Finn won the 1st Australian Stock Dog Spectacular at Tamworth and has had numerous placings Q’Land: Swampoak Myha is worked by Geoff Gibson. Myha was bred by Joy Williams and was sired by Gibsons Smokey out of Ulara Brandy. Myha is a black and white border collie and is 4½ years old. SA: Echo Park Bazza is worked by Stefan Cross. Bazza started trialling in 2019. He had a third placing as a Novice then went on to win a Novice at Finniss. Bazza also won an Improver Trial and an Open with a third in the State Championship Trans Tasman TAS: Sommerville Nell is a 7 year old Border Collie worked by Bernard McGlashen. Nell has won Tas. Dog of the Year four times. Nell won the 2016 Supreme held in Northam WA and the Tas. championship. Nell is the daughter of Somerville Floss VIC: Paton’s Cooper is 9 years old worked by Jim Dodge. Cooper was bred by Barry Paton out of Baluna Bess and sired by Dodge’s Jac. Cooper won the Novice at Koroit in 2019, the SA Supreme in 2014. Cooper had wins in Koroit, Beatson & Beatson, and several other trials over the years WA: Coshies Dusty is 4-5 years old and worked by Peter Gorman Dusty was bred by Colin Cosh from Prince’s Delta by Delrae Eddie. Dusty won Central district trial in Wagin, 2nd at Kendenup, and at Ted Gaby team at Dalby and 3rd Albany to win the W.A. Dog of the year

The Commonwealth Championship Sheepdog Trials are affiliated with the V.W.S.D.A. There are finals in all Commonwealth Championship events.There will only be TOP SCORING DOG in the OPEN section. To enter the TOP SCORING DOG you must also be entered in the OPEN TRIAL.

The FARMERS TRIAL will be run SEPARATELY onSun 6th Feb 2011 commencing at 1pm.

THE WORKING OF AN ARENA TRIAL IN VICTORIA SHEEP DOG TRIALS that are held on an arena use three sheep for each trial. The sheep are usually deposited by a trailer and released from a let-out pen (1). Each trial begins when the worker takes up his position at the peg (2), with his dog about 10 metres behind. A siren signifies the start and the time-keeper starts the watch. Time allowed for the trial is 15 minutes. Each dog starts with 100 points. Points are then progressively deducted
according to the judge’s assessment.

A perfect cast is when the dog runs out in an arc and takes up a commanding position directly behind the sheep, and then moves them gently but firmly in a straight line towards the worker (to the left of an imaginary centre line). As the sheep are drawn down they must be balanced in a straight course and brought around the worker at the peg (2) in an anti-clockwise direction.
Having completed he cast, lift and draw, the worker then walks in a straight course to the first obstacle (the gap - 3), with the dog balancing the sheep close to his right. On arrival at the gap, the sheep, are forced, or balanced, through a metre gap between two 3-metre hurdles.
He then moves on to negotiate the race (4). Having negotiated the race (4), he proceeds to the bridge (5), keeping the sheep on his right, he finally approaches the pen (6). The course is completed when the sheep are in the pen and the gate is shut.
The dog must not cross between the worker and the sheep at any time, except when forcing in a proper manner at an obstacle. Should he do so, the worker is disqualified.
In the event of having not completed the course within the 15 minute time limit, he will retain his points, less deductions for the obstacles that have not been completed.
