ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

It has been great to see students going through subject selection process for 2018 courses. The Year 7s have their selection sheets due this Friday 10 November. The Year 8s, 9s, 10s and 11s have all completed their subject selections in preparation for next year. Thanks to Gabby Theologous, Marc Graesser, Drew Deppeler and Julie Nicholson for assisting in enabling the process to run smoothly. If students feel that they need to discuss their course selections further can they please see Gabby. Students will know their elective choices by December 1, 2017 and will have their timetables by the end of the year. Well done to our Year 11s who have made a great start to their exams this week. Today marks the end of the exam period, it is important that our Year 11 students attend over the next two weeks to start their new courses and get stuck into Year 12. Also a reminder to Year 9 and 10 students that exams are running in

Week 8 (week beginning 27 November). Please ensure that you are reflecting on your notes, setting up study timetables and asking your teachers for further assistance in preparation for the upcoming exam period. Congratulations to Zane Love and Mitchell Gristede who placed second and third respectively in the open Motor Cross competition at Lake Gillear last Friday. A great effort in the open class event and thanks to Jamie Mackieson in organising our school team and new guernseys. Finally, can I request that parents continue to send a note, call the office or enter on Compass if their child is away. Explained absences are crucial to our ability to understand why our students are away and enables positive attendance habits for our students. DAN WALKER 7-12 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Graduate Positions for 2018 The panel would like to announce that we have provisionally appointed Sophie Barr and Madeline Gapes to the graduate teacher positions for next year. The appointments are provisional for two weeks, to allow the merit and equity process to be completed. Sophie is currently working in London and travelling the UK, before planning to settle in the area in December. Sophie has three years teaching experience, having taught at Montpellier and Mandama Primary Schools and as a relief teacher across a broad range of schools in London this year. Madeline is currently employed at Coleraine Primary School and is in her second year of teaching. Both ladies displayed a high passion for student learning and wellbeing. They impressed the panel with their openness to learning, and willingness to work in a team environment. We believe they will be terrific members of the school next year and they are both are excited to be here. 2018 Day Structure In week 7 of this term (20th Nov – 24th Nov) the Primary School will be trialling a different structure to the day. Below are the bell times and a description of how it will look for your child. The reason we want to look at an alternative to how it is now, is because we are finding that the lunch break is too long and many of the behavioural issues are occurring in the second half of lunch. With an opportunity to eat lunch earlier, the students who are having to eat breakfast early can eat at an hour earlier than they can currently, and therefore concentrate better in class. By having the hour session in the afternoon, it should help with improved concentration. The sessions will be one hour long, instead of the current 50 minutes. After trialling it for a week this term, I will be seeking feedback and if we believe it will improve student learning and outcomes, then it will be taken to School Council for approval, with the aim of implementing it in 2018. Please contact me if you have any concerns or wish to discuss the trial further.

Headlice Headlice and nits seem to be rampant at the moment. Can I ask that you check and treat as necessary. As a parent, I am also dealing with the same ongoing problem and understand how frustrating this is. Department of Human Services regulations require that any student who has contracted head lice not attend school until treatment has commenced. Solutions for treatment are available from any pharmacy, or alternatively by implementing the repeated conditioner and combing treatment. Friday Assembly Ms Krueger’s class will be running the assembly this Friday. If you can come and support our young presenters, it would be appreciated. TAP’s On! I am very much looking forward to attending my first TAP’s ON! next Thursday. I know there has been plenty happening behind the scenes to make this a terrific opportunity to showcase the ways our local food production and processing industries support the delivery of curriculum at Timboon P-12. I hope you are able to come along. Cultural Performance The next P-6 cultural performance will be on Wednesday 15th November at 11.30 am in the school hall for all students. The performance will be Wasabi performed by Toshi and Noriko. Toshi and Noriko are two musicians who will perform traditional Japanese Taiko music. GILL HAMPSON P-6 ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Mr Mottram, ably assisted by Tahnee, Emily and Josh, instructed our community Camembert cheesemakers on how to make their own Christmas Camemberts. These annual community Camembert cheesemaking sessions fund the opportunity for Year 8 cohort to make cheese as part of their science class the following year. A great opportunity for students to practise their skills and participants to produce some really good cheese!

Ethical Decision Making Continuing their TAP investigations of how to ”Have your say”, the Year 7/8 politics class welcomed Corangamite Councillor, Simon Illingworth, to learn how to influence the decision makers in our society. The group discussed local issues such as the state of the roads, the impact of tourism in this area, local planning issues and the need to improve sporting and club facilities in our region. Simon described his role on Council and the concept of ethical decision making by explaining that stakeholders and decisions had to be considered and then put to a three part test comprising considering the greater good, ‘do unto others’ and the sunlight test.

Year 7 Tower Hill Excursion – Monday November 20th We have booked our students into a 90 minute tour for the morning. This includes a guided walk with environmental, geological and historical interpretation – including information about bush tucker. In addition, some of the traditional activities of this area including spear throwing, painting, boomerang throwing, didgeridoo demonstrations, message stone painting, dancing and traditional ceremonies will be explored This will provide students with first-hand information about the lives of indigenous people in our local area in ancient times – an integral part of their study of geography and history for the year. Students will also be challenged to consider how we know about the ancient history of this region – the evidence and its interpretation. More details have been posted on compass. Denise Murray – Humanities Coordinator.

2017 Western District Schools’ Spelling Competition Well done to Kyla Groves, Max Rantall, Poppy Smith, Robbie Morden, Amy Stewart and Taj Quarrell who represented the school at this competition in Warrnambool. They went through a gruelling written test behind closed doors and then Amy Stewart got selected as one of the top spellers to compete in the Oral Spell Off on stage. Amy did exceptionally well here, considering the difficulty of challenging words presented to her and the high standard her competitors showed. A special thanks goes to all parents and family members that accompanied these students over to Warrnambool. We certainly appreciated your support and attendance at this function.

The School office will close at 3.45pm on Thursday 16th November due to PD session.

Berryworld – Timboon Strawberries are back at the Caf….. $4.50 a punnet or $3.00 per cup.

What makes a killer ad?

Our Year 8 students were posed this question during an inspiration session with Karen Foster from o2media to help them create effective ads as part of their TAP Camembert in the Classroom challenge. Karen encouraged students to showcase the benefits of their product before the features: to meet a need, solve a problem or make a dream come true and to create a very clear ‘Call to Action’. Thanks Karen, we are looking forward to the results!

Free to a good home.

The Uniting Church Timboon has an

electronic organ which is no longer

used as the volume is very soft on

about half of each octave. Good home

instrument where volume not so

important.

Last Friday Night Rock Climbing 2017 We are looking at running our last Friday night indoor rock climbing trips for 2017 on Friday 1st of December (Week 8) The cost will be a $40 a student covering a discounted school entry to “The Rock” indoor rock climbing centre in Geelong and 20 seater bus hire. The school can supply harnesses and may be able to supply some climbing shoes, depending on size. Parents would be welcome and it may be possible for them to come free as “staff” depending on numbers. This is an extra-curricular multi-age excursion, open to all secondary students and grade 5-6 if accompanied by an older sibling. These trips were originally an extension to our Year 9 camp program but they are in no way compulsory. Other students and/or parents who would like to try indoor rock climbing are encouraged to come along and would be welcome The bus will leave Timboon as soon as practical after the school buses, about 3:40 pm. We will stop at Waurn Ponds where a variety of takeaway franchises are available for an early tea. Then we climb from about 6 to 8:30 pm. Returning back to Timboon about 10:30 to 11 pm.
