The young people of Ardrossan Academy achieve in a variety of different areas

and contexts including learning, sports, creative arts, volunteering, charities,

service and personal achievements.

We are very proud of the achievements of our pupils in school and in their wider

This booklet contains a selection of outstanding achievements in session 2016-

2017.

SPORT

David Johnstone was the first pupil to the finish sponsored walk in September.

S2 girls won team bronze, & Alexander Orderly won individual bronze in NAC cross country competition.

Aria Pascual was nominated for the North Ayrshire Young Sportspersons award, for achievements in Karate.

Ross Jack selected to represent the Ayrshire Schools Under-18 Football Team.

Aria Pascual and Heather Howat selected as Young Sports Ambassadors.

Rachel Holmes wins North Ayrshire & Arran Swimming Championships 2016.

Iona Barclay, Black Belt, and JKA Scottish Junior Team Kumite winner in 2016.

Aria Pascual wins Junior Sports Personality of the Year at the North Ayrshire Council Awards ceremony on Friday night in recognition of her achievements in Karate.

Jay McManus was selected to play for the under 15 Scotland YFA football squad.

Louise Falconer achieved a bronze medal in her class at the British Figure Skating Championships in Sheffield.

Holly McNamara wins Scottish Primary Girls Singles & Doubles Table Tennis Championships.

Nicole Turner plays for the FC Kilmarnock Ladies U-23 Football Team.

Our S1/2 Netball team played their first team game in December, winning 18-11 v St Matthews.

Chloe Lamberton is a Gymnast Club Champion Floor & Vault, Bronze Champion Rhythmic and trophy winner.

Stephanie Spring voted Player of tournament for U14 7 a-side football in December.

S1 girls meet Louise Renicks, commonwealth Judo gold medallist as part of the Winning Scotland champions programme.

Jack Porteous is selected for the Scotland Under 17 Indoor Bowls team.

S1-3 Boys won, and the S1-3 girls were top of their group at the Active Schools Basketball competition in January.

Ellie Davidson and Alexander Orderley qualified for and competed in the Scottish Schools Athletics Competition

Aria Pascual competed in the Karate Grand Prix, Wishaw, winning Gold Kata - (senior female) & Gold Kumite (female 16/17 year category).

Eilidh Murray competed at Crufts, with her dog Milly. She made the Scotland National Dog Agility Team. She represented Scotland in the Word Dog Agility Championships in Holland in May.

Aria Pascual won gold in both the female 16/17 kata & senior female team kata, and bronze in the U-21 females at the Scottish International Open.

S1 Dance Team Amazing performed at the Scottish Schools Gymfest in Perth in May.

Aria Pascual won bronze at the BKF British 4 Nations Karate Championships held in

Sheffield on Sunday in the 16/17 years female kata event.

Ayrshire Athletics Championships results: Alexander Orderley 1st in 800m; Kerri Grier 2nd

in 300m; Megan Pettigrew 3rd in 800m & S2 relay team 2nd.

Ellie Davidson wins 2nd place in the S2 Scottish Schools Athletics long jump competition.

Aria Pascual becomes 2017 Scottish Shotokan Karate Champion 16/17 years; Scottish

All Styles Champion (16/17) & Scottish Senior Team Champion in June.

Michaela McNeill won the U-16 Basketball League with her team Ayr Storm.

S1 and S2 Boys as well as S1-3 Girls teams competed in the inaugural Bobby Lennox Cup

Competition.

Andrew Buchanan, Cameron Leibenguth and Owen Phillips won awards at the Ardrossan

Accies Rugby end of season awards.

CREATIVE ARTS

Graham Bruce entered art work into a number of local art exhibitions in July.

Mackenzie Smith won the Under 12 chanter at Festival of Juvenile Solo Piping held by Caledonian Piping Society.

Ardrossan Organics pupil group contributed a range of products for the Xmas Fayre including home grown herbs, spices and pickled vegetables.

Senior pupils made fully lined and zipped rucksacks in Fashion & Textiles.

Ana Campbell designed the logo for the Ardrossan Organics Company.

S2 and S3 pupils watched the pop band White Eskimos performing as part of anti-bullying week activities.

The Junior Choir performed Christmas carols for visitors to our Xmas Fayre.

S2 pupils participated in a Lingo flamingo language workshop.

Junior Choir visited the Argyle Centre to spread some festive cheer to some of our senior citizens and senior pupils performed at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow.

Jay Scott designed the new logo for Parent Council.

Junior choir and soloists Rachel Lawson and Linzi Smith performed at the EU Congregational Church Community Christmas Concert.

Senior pupils Caitlin Johnston and Alice Blades delivered a talk to S2 about their visit to Auschwitz Concentration camp.

Senior pupils attended Cutting the Rug workshop at Citizens Theatre.

ArdCo art and design enterprise group have been collecting and framing artwork for sale and display throughout this session. They worked with ArtiFarti in Saltcoats to display a range of art work. They have also exhibited work at Xmas Fayre and school show. ArdCo members include Hannah Brown, Isla Kolankaya, Anya Anderson, and Nina Mitchell.

Harry MacDonald designed the ArdCo leaflet advertising the ArtiFarti art exhibition collaboration.

S1-3 pupils paid a visit to Saltcoats Library for an author event with Lari Don.

Michael Morrison was the Winner of Young Rock n Pop musician AA final with Laura McCalmont runner up.

Pupils in the S4 Hospitality class planned and prepared a Tapas lunch for staff. They worked with Darren Fisher from Garfields Tapas Bar to plan and host this event.

The Rights Respecting Schools group presented at assembly.

Anna Reid was selected for a place in the Junior Conservatoire of Scotland Traditional Scottish Music – Singing.

Michael Morrison was first runner up in the North Ayrshire Young Rock n Pop Musician 2017 event in May.

Katelynn Watterson designed the logo for the S1-4 Ardrossan Academy Learning Journal 2017-18.

Artwork produced by a number of Art & Design students from Ardrossan Academy was exhibited at the Arti Farti gallery in Saltcoats in April.

Jay Scott, Matthew McGowan, Nina Mitchell and Anais Blackwood all performed at the BGE Prize giving ceremony in June.

A range of pupils from S1-6 participated in the summer production of Annie, with Amy Palmer starring in the title role.

PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENTS

The Rights Respecting School group achieved their recognition of commitment status in

September.

The Eco Committee met in September to plan setting up their own social enterprise with the school.

Aria Pascual represented the school at the NA Young Ambassadors meet at Hampden Park.

Rachel Greening, Sophie Gribben and Jenny Rogerson achieved 5 A's in their Higher SQA exams in 2016.

Alexander Chisholm, Ethan Gilmour, Aria Pascual, Andrew Parker and Murray Grayston achieved 7 A's in their National 5 SQA exams in 2016.

Martin Madden and Shaun Rodden appointed Nevis House Captains 2016-17.

Emma Brown & Karen Rodger appointed Lomond House Captains 2016-17

Lyle Robertson & Rachael Waddell appointed Barra House Captains 2016-17

Cerys Seaton & Clare Monaghan appointed Annick House Captains 2016-17

Kirsten McMenemy, Elisse Porter, Marie-Ann Wales & Nicola Jamieson appointed as

Student Leaders for 2016-17.

Sophie Gribben attended NASA Space School in Houston, Texas, and met the legendary

Gene Kranz NASA Flight Director for the Apollo13 mission.

S6 pupils developed their leadership skills by running the anti-bully workshops during anti-

bullying week.

Robbie Burns and Bryan Paterson completed a residential work experience with the army.

20 S2 pupils were selected for the S2 Leadership Group starting work with cani coaching.

Amy Palmer and Lucy Muir were winners of the I am a Scientist Get me Out of Here

competition.

The Student Leaders represented the school at Remembrance Sunday events and laid a

wreath at the Ardrossan Memorial on behalf of the school.

S6 Astra Buddies – Rachael Waddell, Sophie Gribben, Kirsten McMenemy and Erin Wigton –

are nominated for NAC Lord Provost award.

20 S2 pupils completed an outward bounds residential week at Loch Eil.

Sophie Gribben presented her Scottish Baccalaureate in Science to invited guests.

The S3 Rights Respecting Schools group presented to year group assemblies.

Linzi Smith and Niamh Templeton volunteered for the Ardrossan Heritage Society Castle

community dig.

Caitlin Trainer, Logan Duff and Rachel Skimming represented the school at the May council

election vote counting.

Led by the Eco Committee a number of pupils participated in a community litter pick today

with the support of Clean Ayrshire.

20 S1 pupils participated in a Leadership training programme with Cani Coaching.

Robert Quinn received his president's badge at Stevenson Boys Brigade.

Jade Beveridge, Lucy Boyd, Kelly Fullarton, Brooke Kenefick, Paige Beveridge and Ebony Clarke all climbed Goat Fell in May to raise money for a local charity cause.

Our S3 Young Enterprise team came 4th in the Sir Tom Hunter All Ayrshire Competition; Megan, Roberts, Ellie Davidson, Abbie Scott, Jordan Young, Matthew Brown, Nabihah Afzal and Cameron Leibenguth.

The Basic Ones - S1 Enterprise Group - made it through to the Ayrshire AYE Finals in June.

Staff Lunch with Garfields Tapas Ardrossan. The National 4 Hospitality class planned, prepared and served a buffet lunch along with a raffle they raised £115 for Ayrshire Hospice.

In September the school sponsored walk raised £1793 for school funds.

The Rights Respecting Schools team celebrated UNICEF’s day for change raising £403

The Astra Base had an afternoon of fundraising for Comic Relief this included S6 pupils Cameron McMenemy and Aidan Lundy performing the blues brothers, Ross Cowan performed on the keyboard. They raised £140 for Comic Relief.

The annual Christmas Fayre in November raised £1800 for our school fund and other charitable causes.

Our school Eco Committee made and sold Ardrossan Academy Organic toiletries at the Christmas Fayre.

Pupils and staff donated items to North Ayrshire foodbank throughout the year including 102 selection boxes at Christmas and 62 Easter eggs at Easter.

Megan Henderson, Nicole Giffney, Nina Mitchell and Chantelle Chapman won the Youth Philanthropy Initiative in February, winning £3000 for their chosen charity ‘Little Box of Distractions’

In October pupils and staff took part in ‘Wear it Purple’ to raise money for Ayrshire Hospice raising £500.

In November S6 pupils held a cake and candy in school to raise money for the Syria and Haiti appeals where £227.56 was raised.

In November our S6 pupils presented a charity cheque to West Kilbride Parish church.

In November our school charities committee donated £500 to North Ayrshire food bank.

Christmas Jumper day to raise money for various charities.

In February our S6 pupils held a cake and candy in school to raise money for the NSPCC.

Jade Beveridge, Lucy Boyd, Kelly Fullarton, Brooke Kenefick, Paige Beveridge and Ebony Clarke climbed Goat fell in June to raise money for North Ayrshire foodbank.

There was a bake sale led by James Gaw, Kaila McSorley, Louise Ribbeck, Mckenzie Smith, Jennifer Jack, Kelly O’Donnell and Nicole Giffney. As well as a coffee morning led by Matthew McGowan, Chelsea Higgins, Callum Bowie, Dylan Brannigan, Caitlin Agnew and Nicole Giffney in June for Mary’s Meals raising £202.

Our S2 Nail Art group raised £50 for Ainslie Mitchell, a local group who is seeking to go to Cuba for much needed medical treatment for lung cancer. The Nail Art group comprised Abbie Love, Erin Townsley, Abbie Trainer, Kayla Guilfoyle, Staci McFarlane, Holly Allan, Nicole Calder, Megan Smith, Mhairi Donnelly and Rosie Holt.
