Preparing for the Next Step...

At MECS we value the process of

preparation to help students get ready for the changes that are

inevitable.

‘‘

‘‘

2. Practise being able to operate in a larger group. This is something that we are continually practising at kinder, but something you can also do at home. Have a few friends over to build up awareness that you can’t always have the fi rst go, and you may have to wait to get attention because when you are one out of 22 or more, you need to be independent and able to follow directions.

3. Build independence. Give children responsibilities around the home such as setting the table, packing their own bags, feeding the family pet, etc. Children are also learning to follow instructions and practising doing something structured,

at a time that may not suit them.

4. Talk positively about the next step, but don’t overdo it. I know some children who were disappointed after their fi rst day at school because they didn’t learn to read on the fi rst day!

5. Build confi dence. With confi dence comes a willingness to learn. If children believe they are smart and can learn things then they’ll reach out to new knowledge and be prepared to take risks in their learning, because learning is a risk. It’s reaching out into the unknown.

6. One more recommendation, no matter how old your child is; read, read, read together (or in the case of older students discuss what’s been read). Read stories, tell stories, and look up information about areas of interest. Reading and hearing stories and having conversations with adults are the best language building experiences, and language; speaking and listening, underpins everything a child needs to do at school.

Transitions can be and usually are really exciting and positive times. However it can be easy to feel overwhelmed when we change environments, so it can

help our anxiety levels if we have a bit of preparation. It’s a big step

in life, but we’ve all had to take it and it’s easier if there’s someone there to

support us.

WendyKindergarten Director

At every stage of life we are required to think about what the next step will be, and how to best prepare for the change ahead. Year 9 students are thinking about Year 10 and various VCE subjects that will shape their future prospects, or maybe students are considering Ranges TEC as an option. Year 6 students will be preparing for the changes that face them in Year 7. While these transitions are recognized as signifi cant, students at all levels need to participate in intentional transition programs. MECS teachers have planned various events to give our students plenty of opportunities to engage with and prepare for the next step.

At MECS we value the process of preparation to help students get ready for the changes that are inevitable. Being prepared for the next big step in our lives well in advance is extremely benefi cial.

Last week marked the beginning of Transition to School for our 2018 Foundation students. During Term 3 our Foundation teachers embarked on the traditional ‘kinder visits’ - a vital fi rst step for children getting to know the teachers in the kinder environment where they are already known and ‘safe’. Preparation for coming to school for the fi rst time isn’t just about making sure your child is ready to learn how to read and count. Empowering children with confi dence is the key to a successful transition. There is bountiful research into how to make this transition smooth for children, and there is a consistent fi nding that it’s not so much about knowing academics such as knowing letters or how to count to ten. The vital thing is feeling confi dent in the relationships that you have with your family and friends, and having well-developed social skills. It has been well documented that if a child has real diffi culties adjusting to the social environment they’re more likely to encounter diffi culties.

MECS kinder children are privileged to be able to spend time within the school, begin to build relationships with teachers, walk around the school and begin to explore areas such as the library and the playground, learn where the boundaries are and where the toilets are (most important!). MECS Kinder is perfectly placed for this natural transition, which has been happening all year long; children have a sense of ‘belonging’ well before they come to school! Children new to MECS also participate in the transition program, so that all children are helped to feel safe and happy in the face of change as best as possible.

Here are some tips for successful transition to school, and maybe with some adapting these helpful ideas could apply to older students transitioning too:

1. Build relationships between parent and teachers, child and teachers, and between the children as well.

At this time of year we are all thinking about what next year will look like. Last week we said goodbye to our Year 12s and I’m sure they are all thinking about how their life will change forever as their school life comes to a close. We pray that wisdom and discernment will be a part of the decision process for our students and we wish them well in their future endeavors.

SKETCHER’S SCOOPshow to other students, staff and our facilities means everyone can have a great day! Our prayers are with them as they sit their exams over the next few weeks and then we look forward to a fi nal celebration on Saturday 25 November at their graduation evening.

Mount Evelyn Street PartyIt was great to be part of the Mount Evelyn Street Party last Sunday and to see so many families from the school drop by our gazebo and say hello. We were also pleased to provide one of the shuttles to move people around the area, so thanks to those staff who volunteered on the day! It was also fun to see some of our students ‘busking’ around the different areas; we look forward to providing more of these sorts of opportunities for our students in the future. They did a great job!

Grandparents and Special Friends DayOne of the highlights of the MECS calendar is always the Grandparents and Special Friends Day. Held much later in the year due to our building works, over 220 visitors still came to support our primary students. Even though this event was a couple of weeks ago, I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to say how much we value and appreciate the support of our extended families and friends. Some of them have had a long association with MECS and it is great to see them each year, whilst others are new to our community and it is great to welcome you into the family. We value the support you show to your grandchildren and other special young people in your lives. It is a blessing for our young people to grow up in such supportive families and networks

Staff Comings and GoingsOur staffi ng team is now complete for next year and as always, we thank God for the provision of just the right people at the right time!

In the Primary school, Lyse will join our Senior Primary team and Richelle will replace Gen as our Ed Support teacher. Melinda (maths), Hayley (humanities, health & drama), Craig (music), Chris (science, sport & PE) and Stephanie (science, sport & PE) will all be joining our secondary team. We have already welcomed Joel into our secondary maths and science teams in recent weeks.

As always, we are excited to welcome new staff into our school. We believe that God has opened the door for them to be appointed and we wish each of them a smooth transition into our school community.

We are thankful for the service of our departing staff members – Michelle (maternity leave), Ella (maternity leave), Sharon, Genevive, Jenny, Chris, Laura, Mem, Ang, Luke and Kathy. For our staff here at MECS, our work is our worship, and so we know that all our departing staff members have given above and beyond in their time and effort as they serve God in their workplace. May God continue to go with them in new seasons of life and new opportunities.

Year 12s Celebration DayCan I congratulate the Year 12s on the success of their ‘Muckeration Day’ last Thursday? Many other schools fi nd this a diffi cult day to navigate, whereas at MECS we are so proud of the way our students choose to celebrate the end of their schooling. The activities of the day not only provide opportunity for refl ection and celebration, but also some fun and organised mischief! The respect that students

Performing ArtsOn...FOCUS A blank canvas, an empty stage, a pen poised above a page.

A thought, a word, an image comes

And the artist begins.

At the start of each VCE Drama unit students are given a prescribed structure and asked to devise a performance. The stimulus material might be anything from a website to a work of art but at that starting point, there is no performance, just a few ideas, perhaps.

Year 9/10 Performing Arts students join the program with the expectation of putting on a theatre production but when they arrive on that fi rst day, there is nothing but a script (and sometimes not even that). They might have words on a page, but who knows what it will look like in the end?

In Year 9 Drama recently we experimented with symbols. One group devised a lovely improvisation using a suitcase to represent a girl’s heart. From that single idea, the class will be creating a group devised performance about the ‘baggage’ people carry, both literally and metaphorically.

They don’t exactly start with nothing, but in the beginning, there is nothing to show. There are no characters, no story, no sound, no action. But somewhere down the track the students will perform something for an audience and look back and see that they had nothing and now they have something, something that they can share with others.

In that creative process, that journey of investigating and improvising and writing and rehearsing, these students have used their heads to learn, their hearts to feel and their hands to do. And, in the image of their Father, they have created.

Final Wrestling ReportSeptember and October are Greco-Roman Wrestling season at MECS. This Olympic style was a feature event at the 1896 Athens Olympics, the fi rst modern Olympics. While fairly obscure in the Commonwealth Countries, it is especially popular among the former eastern bloc nations. While the Russians/Soviets are all time leaders, the Cubans are currently the hot team on the world stage.

At MECS, we have run 2 Greco-Roman tournaments annually for 15 years now. Like most sports, experience pays off. Note the number of trainings each of these wrestlers have attended since they started wrestling.

This year’s results are as follows…

The October Board meeting was focussed primarily on the draft budget. Following preparation by the fi nance committee it is presented to the Board in draft form, with the fi nal budget being presented to the Board in December. The presentation of the budget to the Board allows us to wrestle each year with part of our vision - to continue to provide affordable Christian education. Affordability is a hard concept to grasp and must be also balanced with the various costs of running a school such as paying our staff an equitable wage. We have to also be fi scally responsible to ensure that our amount of debt is appropriate. These challenges present themselves year after year and we would appreciate your prayers as we wrestle with them.

One of the joys of this meeting was to accept 11 new members into the Association. This is a larger than normal number for one meeting and is due to a new way of processing memberships. We have become aware over time that it is diffi cult for some members to complete the process of membership, even though they were very happy to join. This can be due to the busyness of life or just because it takes a couple of steps. To simplify the process we trialled a membership sign-up night. We were able to welcome these new members plus a few more at our EGM.

If you are interested in Association membership, please contact Nicole Nyhouse through the offi ce.

Working Bee

Lilly

What a great spring morning to have a working bee! Last Saturday was our second last working bee for the year. We had a great time, achieved lots of work and enjoyed a wonderful morning tea organised by a beautiful past parent of MECS who still likes to come and help out at working bees, Susan.

Many of the jobs achieved on the day involved shifting the Junior Primary storeroom in preparation for their relocation next year and shifting the Indonesian room to a new classroom in the new Middle Primary complex. We also shifted other furniture, and cleaned cupboards and shelves in classrooms. We cleaned all the drains and pits getting rid of leaves and rubbish, cleaned and tidied up the MECS Community Garden, and did lots of jobs in the kinder yard including oiling blocks, cleaning the dry creek bed out, digging mulch, cleaning up the mud pit etc.

We cleaned up the canteen - shifted furniture, cleaned cupboards and made a great space for the Jenga program. We pruned, tidied and mulched garden beds, pulled apart old furniture and tidied up two storerooms, and put extra padding under the PE mat in the pump room. The working bee gave everyone a great chance to look through the new Middle Primary complex.

We are looking forward to catching up with everyone at the last working bee for the year on 2 December. Be here at 7am for eggs, bacon, hash browns etc for breakfast!

Thanks again for a great day.

VCE Solo PerformancesIt was great to see so many family and friends fi lling the audience for last Wednesday’s presentation of original solo performances by VCE Drama students.

There were seven performers in all, fi ve of whom are in Unit 2. These students presented the character of The Tourist. Emily’s performance of a young English woman mistakenly on a ‘Seniors’ Tour’ and Lilly’s performance of a Russian tourist both had the audience in stitches. Emily S entertained us with her performance of an English woman constantly being told by her husband to ‘keep calm and carry on’, while Dylan and Phoebe, both from Mountain District Christian School, presented very different versions of American tourists.

The two Unit 4 students, who completed their performance examination the week before, presented characters from the offi cial VCAA list. Beth’s character was Mr Sneelock from the Dr Seuss book, If I Ran the Circus. Her highly imaginative and physical piece, written largely in rhyming couplets, included circus acts such as contortion and elephant balancing! The evening fi nished with Ashley’s engaging performance of an actress named Sara Siddons and the true story of Shakespeare forgeries. This solo required the use of the ‘Comedy of Manners’ style and Ashley had a lot of fun with the stylized gesture and Shakespearean language.

Congratulations to all performers and thank you to the audience who supported them !

This year, Middle Primary embarked on a Fantastic Forces camp up at Lyrebird Park, in Yellingbo. The weather held up nicely and allowed us to have a whole heap of fun and exciting activities. The students got to explore forces in action from fl ying foxes to marble runs, from parachute competitions to real life Angry Birds challenges. Both adults and students got to do so much, all the while continuing to build relationships in our MP community. God kept everyone safe and illness/ injury free... apart from some hayfever and a lost shoe. A great 3 days!

Year 11 Legal Studies - A WeddingOn 19 October, 6 students, myself included, Sharon and a former celebrant went to the Chirnside Park Mini Golf course in order to take part in a mock wedding. This was all for the Year 11 Legal Studies class, but because it was school, we had an assignment. Luckily, the celebrant came to our aid and answered most of the questions.

Overall, it was a great experience and we learnt more about marriage on the day than we did in the unit. I would highly recommend Year 11 Legal Studies to anyone who is willing to challenge themselves and learn more about the legal system.

Moving on to Middle School is a big step... you have to scale the heights of the unknown, step carefully, know what’s ahead and how to negotiate the path safely. For some, the steps are more scary than for others and some do it more easily than others. There’s things in place to help us on the journey ... a bit like rock climbing actually. That’s why the Year 6s went to Hard Rock Indoor Climbing centre on Tuesday. They scaled the walls - using the right equipment, confi dence and courage to help them. The next day we refl ected on their rock-climbing experience and how moving up a rock climbing wall might be like moving up to the Middle School. This is part of the Year 6 Core Studies unit ‘The Next Step’, where students prepare for the transition to Middle School and for their Year 6 Graduation. Apart from being a useful analogy, we had a lot of fun; and many students were very proud (and very tired!) at the end of the day. Thank you to all the parents who came and belayed and made it possible for students to have so many climbs.

Cycle A Practice Hikes

JP Teddy Washing Day

Practice Hike 1Wow! What a hot day! A bit unexpected!

But the students took it in their stride - literally!

This year’s Prom Camp is shaping up to be a really great one with the energy and enthusiasm of the students surpassing the last few years. Many students took it upon themselves to do training over the holidays and as a result, they will get so much more out of the experience.

Poor Nicky was hiking at the front of the group and needed to constantly rein in the front group as they wanted to bound down the path.

We also had a large majority of the students cooking their lunch, which was fabulous practice.

Although it was hot, the students all fared really well.

Now we are gearing up to do it all again in the second practice hike.

TimCycle A Teacher

Practice Hike 2 Armed with a hiking pack, tent, camping style lunch and map, Cycle A were off for a taste of adventure on their second practice hike in preparation for Wilsons Prom camp. Scaling the ferny hills of the aqueduct trail, the group aimed to reach Silvan reservoir and it’s surrounding trails, to be back at MECS before the end of the school day.

With enthusiasm and eagerness abounding, Cycle A smashed through the day, completing a tent-setup, cooked lunch and even completing an uphill race towards the end of the day. Needless to say, the day was a roaring success, giving students high expectations for the Wilsons Prom camp.

Water! Water! Water! Chewy doesn’t like water. We did a teddy washing day. Chewy was so heavy when he was in the water but when I squeezed him out he got lighter and lighter. The next day he was back to his normal size and he got really fl uffy.Seth

“Ok class” said Miss T, “let's wash our teddies.” “Yay it’s time” I whisper.

“Oh no I hope my teddy likes this” I say. “Nibbles the teddy, are you in here?” I whispered into my bag. “Yes, I am Mae” Nibbles squeaked.

“Ok Nibbles I hope you’re going to like this” I say. “I hope I am going to like this too because I have never had a bath before” said Nibbles.

“Well in you go into the bath” I say.

Farewell Year 12Last Thursday our hard working Year 12 students took the chance to let their hair down and celebrate their last day of school. The Senior School was decorated in the theme of ‘time travel’, spanning from the Garden of Eden, through to futuristic post-apocalyptic times. There were some very creative room displays and fabulous costumes.

The whole school assembly was a real treat. We had a number of performances from the band, a serenade from Sam and Kwame, the traditional presentation of cards by the Foundation buddies and a memorable dance off between some of the male and female teachers. A special mention to Jordan for putting together the videos for the assembly, and to Josh for doing a lot of the background work in organising the day. All in all, this year’s Muckeration Day was a fantastic celebration of community and the achievement of completing Year 12. We wish them well and will keep them in our prayers as they face the busy time ahead of completing their VCE exams.

Farewell Year 12A fond memory I have from 2010, the year I started at MECS was with this group, when they were Year 5s on Senior Primary camp at Sovereign Hill.

We had known each other only a few months but in that time I was aware of a couple of fellow Richmond Tiger supporters in the group, despite that being nothing… nothing… to be proud of at the time.

One of the activities on camp was candle making, and Adam presented me with a Richmond candle that he had made for me during the day. (What a sweetie!) In thanking him I fl ippantly added the comment that we would light it when Richmond won their next premiership. We laughed that off... yeah if we lived that long!

To be honest, I was prepared to light it after the preliminary fi nal as I held little faith (in Footy anyway). Well miracles happen and our fairytale ending continues as we lit our commemorative candle in Adam’s, and my fi nal year at MECS.

Can I encourage all Year 12s, regardless of their AFL allegiance, as you embark your 'fi nals', with the following:

We are so grateful to Evelyn Dubbeld who has coordinated the process for many years, and has put in many, many hours of volunteer time, and raised thousands of dollars for the school. The process will now require parents to source their child’s stationery themselves. To support parents and to continue to fundraise for MECS, we have set up a process with Lilydale Books as our recommended supplier for stationery.
