Franklin County Arts Council Fine Artsscholarship awards

HHAAMMPPTTOONN — Four 2013 Franklin County graduatesare the recipients of Franklin County Arts Council(FCAC) Fine Arts Scholarships. The scholarships helpstudents in Franklin County who plan to major in finearts.

American Institute of Architects’ awardsMMIINNNNEEAAPPOOLLIISS — Alissa D. Luepke Pier is among

15 architects selected to receive the 2013 AmericanInstitute of Architects’ Young Architects Award. Sheis the daughter of Lynn and Diane Luepke, St. Ansgar,and the granddaughter of Marcella Braun, BuffaloCenter.

Young Architects are defined as professionals whohave been licensed 10 years or fewer, regardless of theirage. This award now in its 20th year, honors individualswho have shown exceptional leadership and made sig-nificant contributions to the profession early in theirarchitectural careers.

Luepke Pier is currently president of ADL Pier Designin Minneapolis. She has designed dozens of projectsthroughout Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and California.Over the past few years, she has also been a skilled edu-cator. In her role as an adjunct faculty member, she hastaught and inspired hundreds of students in the designfield.

In addition, Luepke Pier has a long-held commitmentto public service. She served as commissioner of the cityof Minneapolis Board of Adjustment and is currently acommissioner on the city’s Planning Commission. Sheis active in community and volunteer service. When atornado struck northern Minnesota, she was instru-mental in soliciting design professionals to volunteertheir time to neighborhoods, struck by the tornado.

Algona High School Concert Band spring tourAALLGGOONNAA — The Algona High School Concert

Band went to Kansas City for its annual spring tour,April 25-27, with a stop at Graceland University inLamoni.

The band members had the opportunity to rehearsewith and learn from Frank Perez, the director of bands atGraceland University. The band spent time preparingmusic for its upcoming performances and finished theclinic with a professional recording session. The tourconcluded with a performance by the AHS ConcertBand at Worlds of Fun, where it earned a “I” rating, aswell as first place in the Senior High 246-750 Studentclass.

The band performed at the State Large Group Festivalon Friday, May 3, and will perform at the Algona HighSchool Band spring concert on May 14.

The funding for PostProm came from a bakesale and the selling of Hy-Vee coupon books. Thedonations from area busi-nesses and private dona-tions are what made theevent such a tremendoussuccess.

Some of this year’sactivities included Casinogames, a Zumba class,Karaoke, and a hypnotist.Great food consisted ofpizza, wings, fruit kabobs,cookies, pop and water.Some of the prizes givenaway were a mini refriger-ator, TV and iPads.

A big thank you goes outto NIACC, area businesses,private donors and all theindividuals who workedtogether to provide a safeand memorable Post Promfor our students.

Volunteers with RSVPprovide hundreds of hoursof service primarily in ele-mentary and middleschools across North Cen-tral Iowa, in the Iowa RadioReading Information Ser-vice for the Blind and PrintHandicapped program atKCMR radio station inMason City, with theWalking School Bus Pro-gram sponsored by theCerro Gordo CountyDepartment of PublicHealth, and through theInternational Friends pro-gram at North Iowa AreaCommunity College,which sponsors RSVP.

RSVP currently has 302volunteers involved in itsliteracy programs in CerroGordo, Hancock, Win-nebago and Worth coun-ties. This school year, vol-unteers are working with370 students in readingand mentoring programsin 17 schools, and withanother 179 students inPen Pal programs in sixschools. The reading andmentoring programsinclude Reading Coaches(volunteers who tutor andmentor middle school stu-dents), Reading Buddies(volunteers who work withelementary school stu-dents) and Breakfast Bud-dies (volunteers who meetwith students while theyeat breakfast at school).

RSVP volunteers alsoserve as leaders for theWalking School Bus pro-gram in Mason City, readthe Globe Gazette for theIRIS program, a free newsand information servicethat broadcasts 24 hours aday every day of the year tothousands of listenersthroughout Iowa, and

serve as friends to interna-tional students at NIACC.
