Organism Interactions & BiodiversityQuestion 1 .

A state was planning to construct several hundred miles of new railway in an area that was currentlythe habitat of many different plant and animal populations. During the planning stage, state officialsasked two scientists to come up with plans to help reduce the impact of the railway construction on thebiodiversity of the area. The two plans are described below.

Plans for Maintaining Biodiversity in Area Proposed for Railway ConstructionPlan Plan Highlights

Plan A

Perform a wildlife survey to determine the best locations for construction based on thepresence of endangered or threatened species.

Start construction of aboveground rail tracks in selected locations; as constructionproceeds, create wildlife corridors that help connect divided animal populations tomaintain genetic diversity in the region.

After construction is complete, replant with native plants along cleared constructionareas where possible.

Continue to monitor the area for changes in populations and form new action plans asneeded.

Approximate cost of plan: $5 billion

Plan B

Perform a wildlife survey to determine the best locations for construction based on thepresence of endangered or threatened species.

Dig large underground tunnels in selected areas in which all of the rail tracks will beconstructed.

Line tunnels with concrete to provide stability, construct rail tracks, then cover thedisrupted areas with soil and native plants so that the habitat is only minimallyimpacted by the presence of the underground railways.

Continue to monitor the area for changes in populations and form new action plans asneeded.

Approximate cost of plan: $30 billion

It was determined that Plan B would likely limit habitat disruption better than Plan A. State officials, however, decided to go with Plan A.

Why did the state officials probably choose Plan A?

A. Plan B would not have been as effective at maintaining biodiversity.

B. The economic demands of Plan B were too high.

C. An aboveground track will look better than the underground one proposed by Plan B.

D. Plan B would have caused many of the populations to go extinct.

Question 10 .

Directions: Select each correct answer. More than one answer may be correct. All plants need nitrogen to survive, but it is naturally available to them in only limited supplies. In 1909,engineers developed a process to make nitrogen available to plants by synthetically producing thechemical ammonia. Once produced, ammonia could be used as a fertilizer for crops around the worldthanks to its nitrogen content.

The process that the engineers developed is still used today. It makes use of the reaction betweennitrogen gas and hydrogen gas at very high pressures. Nitrogen gas is the most abundant gas in theatmosphere and is widely available. Hydrogen gas needs to be made from the methane found innatural gas. Natural gas is a fossil fuel that can be extracted from underground reserves.

Question 5 .

Directions: Type your answer in the box. Use numerals, not words. The yellow tang (Zebrasoma flavescens) is a tropical fish commonly found in the Pacific and Indianoceans. Suppose a population of yellow tangs lives in a coral reef. The graph below shows thedistribution of body sizes within the population at the time the fish began to live in the reef.

The body sizes of the fish vary from about 20 grams to 180 grams, but most of the fish have a mass ofabout 100 grams. The amount of calories each fish needs per day depends on its size, as shownbelow.

Mass (grams) 20 40 60 80 100 120 140 160 180Daily Caloric Needs

(calories) 10 25 40 65 80 95 110 125 140

Over time, selective pressures begin to act on the population. Food becomes scarce, limiting thenumber of calories available to individual yellow tangs. Eventually, the average amount of calories thatare available to each yellow tang becomes 40 calories per day.

After several generations survive in the altered environment, what will the average body size ofyellow tangs in this population be?

grams
