RIVERSIDE DINNER THEATER EVENT

I would like to invite the parish to some important events during March.

1) On March 18 we welcome Sr Cecilia, Prioress form the Benedictine Monastery in Bristow to our TGIF (Think God its Friday) for a presentation at Fr Griffin Hall. In light of the Benedictine tradition of hospitality she will present a perspective on Immigration. We usually gather be-fore 7pm.

2)Our major parish event honoring St Joseph and St Patrick will take place on March 19, be-ginning around 6 30 pm. We always like participants to buy tickets in advance(available from parish office ) for this dinner dance. This multicultural event encourages us to build a sense of unity as a parish.

3)The George Brent K of C has invited me to serve as grand master of the Manassas St Patrick's day Pa-rade //www.stpatparade.net/ On March 12 at 11 am. I welcome all my brother Knights, their families and fel-low parishioners of Holy Family to join me for the event on March 12.

CHAPLAIN’S MESSAGE

As you know, Father Edward L. Richardson SMA Assembly #3174 of the Fourth Degree is participating in the Overseas Coupon Program. We periodically send coupons to Wiesbaden Army Base in Wiesbaden, Germa-ny, for use at Post and Base Exchanges and Commissaries. What you need to do is simple: Bring MANUFACTURER'S coupons (both food and non-food) to your regular council meetings. The 4th De-gree will collect, tabulate and send them off. It won't cost you a cent.

The folks on the base tell me that in the food category, they can really use coupons for baby food. In the non-food, category, coupons for pet food and supplies would be greatly appreciated. A few guidelines: • Manufacturer's coupons only. No restaurants, grocery stores, etc

• Please pay attention to expiration dates. Coupons used on the base are good for six (6) months after the expiration date.

• Please separate the coupons into “food” and 'non-food” categories. If you eat or drink it for a meal or snack it's food. Vitamins, medical products, etc., are non-food.

We have a box marked “4th Degree Military Coupons” just outside the clubroom door. If you don’t attend council meetings, you can still contribute by dropping them in the box when you're at the Council Home. Over the past year, we sent more than $33,000 in coupons to help our folks in uniform. Please contin-ue to help with this good work.

Ray Humenik

Our Knight of the Month for March is Brother Ray Humenik. Ray is a charter member of our Council since its founding in 1978. He participates in a ma-jor way in all the activities we do throughout the year. He has been there and done that and is a great advisor to all our younger Knights. He is a Past Grand Knight and an invaluable advisor to me and the other Officers to address the challenges we face throughout the Fraternal Year. In addition to being in the Honorary Members Club, Ray is very active in many ways that benefit the Council. He regularly attends Business Meetings and is a regu-lar, every week, at the Monday Night Bingo. His oth-er activities include the Holy Family Festival, Sub Sales, and the Art Auction. In other words, Ray can be counted on to do what needs to be done to keep the Council running smoothly and ensure that all of our goals and aspirations are met. Ray is a model for our younger Members to learn how they too can benefit themselves, their Fellow Brothers and the people and organizations served by our Council. Ray, thanks for all you do and congratulations for being our Knight of the Month for March.

Page 7

Our Family of the month for March is Bob and Rose Marie Scheller. Bob is an active member of the Council and due to a vacancy with one of the trus-tees moving away Bob agreed to step in a fill this important role for the next 2 years. Bob is a also a regular at Bingo on Monday nights working the floor selling instants. During sub-sales Bob is always there to help with assembling the subs. Rose Marie is a member of the K.C Ladies and supports their bingo baked goods raffles, the mimosa breakfasts, bunko nights and the like. The Scheller’s are regu-lars at summer picnics and many, many of the other council events throughout the year and can always be counted on to lend a hand. It’s because of their support and others like them that this Council is suc-cessful.

We are asking you and your family members to join the Council’s “Forty Cans for Lent” project to help support Holy Family Food Pantry. As you may have heard, the Supreme Knight has asked us to be more supportive of our local parishes and we feel this pro-vides us an outstanding opportunity to support our

Church and help feed the hungry among us.

The project is very simple. Collect one can of food per day during the 40 days of Lent, which began on Ash Wednesday February 10th. Drop off your cans at any time throughout the Season at the Food Basket in the vestibule of Holy Family or at the Food Pantry.

You will be given stickers to place on the bottom of each can, so that the food pantry coordinator can track our progress and provided us a total number of cans donated. We have a very modest goal of 2,016 cans. We can do this.

This project will help fight hunger in our immediate community and also provide you an opportunity to take a small sacrifice and turn it into a big difference in the lives of others. Won’t you join us today in this Lenten sacrifice?

To get your stickers and sign up to be a part of this worthy project, contact PGK Larry Pemberton, 703-472-4572 or [email protected].

“Resolved by this assembly: That Michael J. McGivney, Matthew C. O’Connor, Cornelius J. Driscoll, James J. Mullen, John J. Kerrigan, Daniel Colwell, and William M. Geary, and all other persons now asso-ciated with them under the name of the Knights of Columbus, together with all other such person as may hereafter become associated with them, and their successors, are constituted a body corporate and politic by the name of the Knights of Columbus. “The purpose for which said corporation is formed are the following: (a) of rendering pecuniary aid to its

members, their families and beneficiaries of members and their families; (b) of rendering mutual aid and assistance to its sick, disabled and needy members and their families; (c) of promoting social and intellectual intercourse among its mem-bers and their families, and (d) of promoting and conducting educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief and welfare, and public relief work.” ~ Excerpted from the Charter of the Knights of Columbus, Granted by the General Assembly of the State of Connecticut, Approved March 29, 1882. As the Connecticut winter drew to a close in March of 1882, few could have imagined that the new Catholic organi-zation just approved by the General Assembly would amount to much. Secret societies and fraternal organizations were abundant. And besides, Catholics weren’t well-liked or highly thought-of. There was even some Catholic resistance to the idea of the Knights of Columbus. Local priests took issue with the concept. A similar Catholic group even refused to allow Father McGivney to establish a branch of their organization in Connecticut. It was seemingly inconceivable that an organization, begun in such unwelcoming circumstances, would go on to become one of the world’s largest Catholic fraternal organizations. It was baffling to think that a group of destitute Irish immigrants, fighting against unemployment, discrimination, and diseases in New Haven, Connecticut would cause a spark that would light up the world with more than 1.9 million members, in more than a dozen countries. It was so improbable that a group of men dedicated to serving the needs of their Catholic community would go on to donate nearly $1.5 billion dollars to charitable causes, and spend 673 million hours volunteering in just the last decade. And it seemed so unlikely that a Catholic priest, who spent nearly every waking minute attending to the spiritual and material needs of his parishioners, would be the founder of one of North America’s largest life insurance com-panies. Inconceivable? Baffling? Improbable? Unlikely? Perhaps – but not to Fr. McGivney. And, not to the 75 men who dared to answer his call to found the Knights of Columbus. It is his vision – and theirs – that we celebrate each March as “Founder’s Day.” And what, exactly, did they found? Father McGivney, we know, did not just found a charitable society, but a society of mutual aid through which members would insure their own well-being, and that of their families, with the help of their brother knights. Father McGivney, we’re told in Parish Priest, began the founding of the Order and its insurance program with “an entrepreneurial zeal.” Determined to provide financial protection for his parishioners and their families, McGivney, “had to delve into the subject of insurance and read all of the fine print, of which there was plenty.” Before deciding that a new group was in order, Father McGivney researched the finer points of the insurance pro-grams of other fraternal benefit organizations, ultimately concluding that their coverage was insufficient. And when it came to time crunch the numbers and establish the newly-founded Knights’ insurance program, it was Father McGivney himself who set down the terms and reported them to the members, and to other parishes in the diocese. “In the way that Father McGivney had organized the insurance,” Parish Priest says, “nearly anyone could afford coverage.” Father McGivney was devoted to his mission, working tirelessly until his premature death at age 38. How proud must Father McGivney and his brother knights be to know that program he founded continues to pro-vide affordable, quality insurance to knights and their families? How proud must they be to know that the Knights of Columbus continues to provide insurance by brother knights, for brother knights, protecting Catholic families for generations? How proud must they be to know that the Knights of Columbus, with over $100 Billion in force and more than 2 mil-lion active contracts, is protecting more Knights than ever before? Not nearly as proud as we are to call Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney our beloved founder. (Continued on Page 12)

Knights of Columbus

A FOUNDING VISION, A VISIONARY FOUNDER (Continued from Page 10) This March, let’s make Father McGivney’s priority our own. Let’s continue his mission of protecting Catholic families from destitution and financial ruin by making sure that our families are protected with insurance for brother knights, by brother knights. After all, it’s part of what being a Knight is all about.

Happy Founder’s Day! Thom Harrington, 703-810-3200 [email protected] www.ThomHarrington.com

First and foremost, let's not forget what it means to be a Knight of Columbus. We are many things in life, but when

you take that First Degree, you are invested with the spiritual legacy of a man, that wanted to find a way to help people. Fr. McGivney, was a priest, a religious man, but also a practical man. He saw a problem, saw many families destitute because the breadwinner could not provide any more. He knew that strength comes from unity. I cannot presume to know the thought process which brought him to create the Knights, but I can venture to say that the Holy Spirit had something to do with the inspiration. The majority of us, will live a life which will not be any closer to be as transcendental as Fr. McGivney's life was and is, but he made possible for us to be able be a part of this transcendence and great work. The Order is not a name or a set of rituals. The Order is his work, brotherhood and charity, passed down to generations. He's done his work, now we continue. Thank You, Juan Martinez
