Central Office will be closed Monday

August 20th for the CCF Picnic

The Twelve Concepts or the ‘Why’ it works in AA

Bill Wilson found it necessary to explain the spiritual principles that

‘undergrid AA’s structure and how the parts work together— what

entities were supposed to do what, what was their relationship, who

was in charge and what were their rights and responsibilities. He

detailed these explanations and structures in the A.A. Service

Manual/Twelve Concepts for World Service.

What follows here are two of those Concepts paraphrased and

quoted to illustrate their application to the service entities of the

Central California Fellowship. At times of confusion and controversy,

it is important to look to the many tools that we have been given to

move beyond the problem and find clarity in the solution.

Concept I —Final responsibility and ultimate authority for AA world

services should always reside in the collective conscience of our

whole Fellowship.

Alcoholics Anonymous has been called and upside-down

organization because “ultimate responsibility and final

authority…..resides with the groups—rather than CCF or its Central

Office. This organizational structure is design to compliment and is

rooted in Tradition Two, which states:

“ For our group purpose there is but one ultimate authority—a

loving God as He may express Himself in our group conscience. Our

leaders are but trusted servants; they do not govern.’

The principles of Tradition Two are crystal clear. Bill asserts: The AA

groups are to be the final authority; their leaders are to be entrusted

with delegated responsibilities only.” The outside world cannot

imagine an organization run in this way, but Bill calls it ‘a spiritualized

society characterized by enough enlightenment, enough

responsibility, and enough love of man and God to insure that our

democracy of world service will work…”

Concept II —As a traditional means of creating and maintaining a

clearly defined working relationship between groups, CCF and its

service corporations (Central Office), staffs, and committees , and of

thus insuring their effective leadership, it is here suggested that we

endow each of these elements of world service with a traditional

“Right of Decision.”

…”every trusted servant and every AA entity—at all levels of

service—has the right ‘to decide...how they will interpret and apply

their own authority and responsibility to each particular problem or

situation as it arises.” That is they can “decide which problems they

will dispose of themselves and upon which matters they will report,

consult, or ask specific directions.” This is the essence of ‘The Right

of Decision.’”

them to locate meetings in their area or provide them with someone to talk to in times of crisis.

This is a great way to be of service to your fellow alcoholics. All you need is the use of a phone and a current meeting schedule. From the comfort of your own home on a landline telephone or even while you’re out and about with the use of a cell phone you can be of service.

We would love to have you join our team. If you have at least six (6) months of sobriety and would like to be of service please contact Central Office at 916-454-1771 or email: [email protected] SERVICE

Step Seven

"On a daily basis I choose not to drink - or to fear, hate, be angry, or indulge in any other defect that's raising its ugly head. They're all there waiting, and when given a chance they charge into the center of my life and try to take over. But when I work Step Seven I find that my life is filled with good, and people actually like to be around me - something they never did in my drinking days."

The Eighth Step

The Eighth Tradition

“Alcoholics Anonymous should remain forever non-professional.

We define professionalism as the occupation of counseling

alcoholics for fees or hire. But we may employ alcoholics where

they are going to perform those services for which we might

otherwise have to engage nonalcoholics. Such special services

may be well recompensed. But our usual A.A. “12 Step” work is

never to be paid for.” (The Long Form) Big Book Page 968

The Eighth Concept

The trustees are the principal planners and

administrators of overall policy and finance. They have

custodial oversight of the separately incorporated and

constantly active services, exercising this through their

ability to elect all the directors of these entities.

(The Short Form) Big Book Page 575

“Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became

willing to make amends to them all”

We made it when we took inventory. We subjected

ourselves to a drastic self-appraisal. Now we go out to

our fellows and repair the damage done in the past. Big Book Page 76

BOOK OF THE MONTH Fearless Admission So far as alcoholics are concerned,

A.A. would go even further. Most of us

would declare that without a fearless admission of our defects to another

human being we could not stay sober. It seems plain that the grace

of God will not enter to expel our

destructive obsessions until we are willing to try

this. - Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, Pg. 96-57

Failed

All went well for a time, but he failed to enlarge his spiritual life. To his consternation, he found

himself drunk half a dozen times in rapid succession. On each of these occasions we worked with him, reviewing carefully what had

happened. He agreed he was a real alcoholic and in a serious

condition. - Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 35

Our Big Book

We attempt to sweep away the debris which has accumulated out of our effort to

live on self-will and run the show ourselves. If we haven’t the will to do this,

we ask until it comes. Remember it was agreed at the beginning we would go to

any lengths for victory over alcohol - Alcoholics Anonymous, pg., 76

Thought to Ponder

The ultimate defense against the first drink is a

spiritual one.

The Twelve Concepts or the ‘Why’ it works in AA (Continued from page 1)

Bill warns against using “The Right of Decision” as an excuse for failure to make the proper reports of actions

taken; or for exceeding a clearly defined authority; for failure to consult the proper people before making an

important decision. But he concludes:

“Our entire AA program rests squarely upon the principle of mutual trust. We trust God, we trust AA, and we trust each other.”

When actions are taken or activities proposed that cause concern for any member of CCF there is a clear and

appropriate mechanism that is grounded in spiritual practices and principles for expressing and addressing those

concerns.

“It is a spiritual axiom that every time we are disturbed, no matter what the cause, there is something

wrong with us. Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. page 90

Restraint “Our first objective will be the development of self-restraint. This carries a top priority rating. When we speak or

act hastily or rashly, the ability to be fair-minded and tolerant evaporates on the spot. One unkind tirade or one

willful snap judgment can ruin our relation with another person for a whole day, or maybe a whole year. Nothing

pays off like restraint of tongue and pen. We must avoid quick-tempered criticism and furious, power-driven

argument. The same goes for sulking or silent scorn. These are emotional booby traps baited with pride and

vengefulness. Our first job is to sidestep the traps. When we are tempted by the bait, we should train ourselves to

step back and think. For we can neither think or act to good purpose until the habit of self-restraint has become

automatic.

W hy T hat's F funny. All IPower would do to assist was attempt to sell us a more expensive db Solution. aasacramento.org is no longer on Ipower - It's on Linode (server) + Forge (db). This transition was quick and in support of a primary (web) purpose, to offer (consistent) meeting search for the 7/4/18 holiday. ● Over time, Pete and Rae will discuss the formalities of leaving Ipower. Contract Considerations: ● Current Contracts with (Ipower, Sitelock and Linode) remain in place. CCFAA will carefully consider moving away in steps (Support, Security, email admin etc.) Budgetary Considerations:

● New (negligible) expenses on Linode are to Pete B. ● After we exit from Ipower, CCFAA will see a 50-75% decrease in web expenses. ● 2018 (Jan.) Budget for (Line item #5792) Website Hosting = $600 ● 2018 (Jan.) Budget for (Line item #5625) Website Admin = $901 ● Pete will work with Rae to offer up current expenses and proposed 2019 budget.

Open Items: ● Define Support roles and Technical escalation, Old model = Pete to Ipower / *Current model = Pete to Josh (?) ● Need to insure [email protected] is properly configured away from Ipower ● Suggest we tune and remain on Sitelock

Separate Open Item (Updates to follow): ● Rae is looking at online transactional aspects on website with a WordPress (WP) plugin ● These online transactions would be for (ex.) Bookstore, Shipping, Faithful Fivers, Group contributions, Anonymous Contributions, Birthday Club, In Memoriam etc. ● This WP Plugin would interface both with aasacramento.org & our Merchant Bank ● Transactions would be PCI Compliant (The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) applies to companies of any size that accept credit card payments. If your company intends to accept card payment, and store, process and transmit cardholder data, you need to host your data securely with a PCI compliant hosting provider.) This software update/renewal is required annually. Our QuickBooks Tech Support was not renewed because of the significant cost increase and the ineffectiveness of the service.

1. Our credit card terminal lease ended and the equipment was purchased for $196.48 which is a savings on the $39.99/month lease . 2. On Monday, July 2nd the HVAC contractor and the Landlord’s Roof Tech affected the repairs to the roof and performed a leak test. All

went well and the old HVAC unit was reinstalled. So far so good. 3. We have had some challenging issues with our website. Our Webmaster, Pete B., has been spending a lot of time keeping the sit e up

and functional. Please see Pete’s report to the Delegates. We had a considerable amount of help from Josh with the Santa Clara CO. 4. Second Quarter Sales and Payroll Tax returns, deposits and reports will be completed by the July 31 st deadline. And All Is Well

Prudent Reserve 35,730.26 I apologize for my absence as I have a service commitment at the Unity and Service Conference in Concord this weekend. Thank you for showing up. The Second Quarter financial report is available and will be printed in the By The Way. Our current resources remain strong, showing a cash position of $61,712.17, which includes our prudent reserve of $35,730.26 and $25,831.91 in the operating account. Total income was $19k which is an 12% increase over May's adjusted income. May income was artificially inflated by the receipt of a one-time $5000 bequest. Year -To-Date (YTD) total income, $144k, is $10k or 7% over our 2018 budget. The YTD net income, $8k, is $800 below our annual budget projection after our unexpected lease and roof expenses but we are still viable. H. By-Laws & Procedures Chairperson’s Report BYLAWS AND OPERATING PROCEDURES COMMITTEE REPORT JULY 21,2018

Today we present 5 changes that need to be implement in the Operating Procedures. 3 changes due to grammatical, 2 changes due to law. The committee felt we should let you know about the changes before we made them. I will be instructing the Office Manager to make the changes on Monday July 23, 2018 so that next month any Operating Procedures printed out will have the changes in them. Thank you for letting me be of service. Bill D. Reason: The State of California passed 2 laws: first in 2009 AB 1233 the second in 2014 AB 2755. The laws both changed the way the State of California looked at the definition of “ex officio”. 12. CCF BOARD OF DIRECTORS: 12.1. MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS: 12.1.5.
