I hope all is well and that all of you are enjoying the summer with family and friends. This past month has been a busy one. In addition to our monthly Annual Planning Committee meeting, the CCPS Council met in Sacramento and, by way of teleconference, in Bakersfield. The CCPS Chapter Presidents also met this month for our quarterly meeting. The following is a quick overview of some positive changes we are making, in order to better represent and serve our CCPS members. Each of our Chapters will be receiving an increase to $300 per year in financial support for educational and social chapter meetings. This is certainly not much money, and it is not meant to cover the cost for speakers or meals. Chapter leadership will use this money, as well as the administrative support by Chris Stockton, to bring in private sector funding that can support relatively small gatherings. In the past year, we have partnered with financial advisors, physician recruitment firms, local psychiatric hospitals and malpractice insurance companies to help bring our members together for educational meetings. Over the next six months, CCPS plans to pilot an Early Career Psychiatrist (ECP) and Our Annual Planning Committee is already hard at work in developing the topics and speakers for the next meeting. We’ll be back at Chaminade for one more year, in Santa Cruz, from March 23-25, 2012. After that, based on feedback from our members, we’re looking to return to Aptos or Monterey. We’re also searching for more committee members, so if you’re interested in providing input into the meeting and able to commit to one hour teleconference meetings once a month, please e-mail me at [email protected] . Member in Training (MIT) mentorship program. We will ask for “CCPS veterans” to volunteer their time and meet with eager psychiatrists who wish to further develop their career goals and learn how to succeed in the world or both community and academic psychiatry. Please contact me if you would like to serve as either a mentor or mentee. I am excited to announce that Dr. Joseph Lebenzon and Dr. Barry Mills are now serving a two-year term as Co-chapter Presidents of the Sierra Chapter. Jen Lancaster, M.D., recent UCSF Fresno Department of Psychiatry graduate, and Rachel Rose, M.D. UCSF Fresno PGY 3, have done a terrific job as MIT Representatives, and I am most grateful for their enthusiastic service. Please mark you calendars for our 2012 CCPS Annual Meeting, which will be held in Santa Cruz on March 23-25, 2011. Shannon Suo, M.D., our Annual Planning Committee Chair, and Committee members are hard at work making sure we have another high quality conference. I look forward to seeing you there!

year (plus, including his activity as President-Elect under Don Hilty). He’s going to be a hard act to follow! I’m gearing up and networking with the Presidents and President-Elects from the other DBs in California and happy to say that we’re already collaborating and working on “cross-pollination” (as NCPS President, Raymond Reyes calls it). We’re developing a member’s corner of the CCPS website and will send out notification when it’s ready for member consumption! In the meantime, I encourage to you use the APA website (www.psych.org) and go to the On-Line Membership Directory and log in (don’t log in until you get to the membership directory link), update your profile, and search for people you know (or want to know). Also, if you haven’t seen the “Voices of CCPS” video on the www.cencalpsyc.org website, do check it out. Many of our officers were interviewed in this brief video and you may see someone you know! Thanks to John Onate for his direction/production/editing of the video!

Sierra Chapter Update Submitted By, Barry Mills, MD,

Co‐President CCPS Sierra Chapter

As the new Co-President of the Sierra CCPS chapter, I am pleased to announce the formation of a new Psychiatry Residency Program in Visalia, CA at the Kaweah Delta Health Care District Our training program will be academically affiliated with UC Irvine and will start regular meetings in the Summer of 2011 to submit our formal psychiatric curriculum, leadership appointments and list of faculty members to the ACGME by January 2012. Kaweah Delta Medical Center (www.kaweahdelta.org) is a 500 bed not-for-profit district hospital in California's Central Valley. The award-winning medical center is a Level III trauma center with over 78,000 annual ED visits, 28,000 admissions, fully electronic medical record system and is certified as a Magnet hospital. The city of Visalia is located between Bakersfield and Fresno in the Central California Valley and has a population of over 130,000. We are recruiting for several academic positions and hope to increase the number of psychiatrists in the Central Valley as well as expand the Sierra Branch of CCPS. We have opportunities for teaching, research and protected academic time including Core faculty leadership positions for Directors of Inpatient, Outpatient, Geriatric, Forensic, Child-Adolescent & Consult-Liaison. CCPS Newsletter Acknowledgement—Barry Mills, MD is the residency program director at the Kaweah Delta Health Care District.

REMINDER!!!

The California Psychiatric Association’s Annual Meeting this year is the last weekend in September (9/23-9/25/11), not our usual weekend before Columbus Day. The Tenaya Lodge at Yosemite is smaller than some of the hotels we’ve reserved before, so it is important to reserve

your room early. The room block will be dropped August 23, 2011 and the rate will increase, so it is important you get your reservations in early.

Please contact the hotel directly, Tenaya Lodge Reservations 800-635-5807.

It’s Western-wear and a relaxing atmosphere for a weekend of learning and fun. Send in your registration form from the brochure you received or call
