From Our Auxiliary Pastor I have always found the gospels fascinating. The Bible, which contains so much Good News, provides us with this center-the Gospel-that recalls the life, ministry, and teachings of Jesus. As we enter into ordinary time, the weeks after Pentecost, the lectionary takes us on a journey into Mark’s account of Jesus’ story. In fact, we will be venturing through Mark for the remainder of our time together! Mark has a message to get across to his community and to us about Jesus. As we know, the gospel writers have their own styles, their particular communities- each with their own needs, concerns, demographics and contexts. Mark is no different. There are times where Jesus’ teachings rub up against the religious traditions and laws, but Jesus is not simply encountering religious leaders, he is also meeting many along his way who are unfamiliar with Jewish law and religious custom, namely the Gentiles. Mark’s account contains patterns and highlights particular points he wanted to emphasize about who Jesus was, what he did and how those around him received or rejected him and his teachings. As we venture, we will hear of Jesus’ healings and of the immediacy of Jesus’ actions in Mark. We will hear Jesus’ parables concerning the kingdom of God and will witness how Jesus’ words and teachings are so often misunderstood and seemingly hard to grasp. Mark certainly makes a clear distinction between those who “get it” verses those who think they get it. Years ago, I fell in love with this first composed gospel, the shortest of the four. I wrote my master’s thesis on the vital role of the crowds in Mark. As I read and entered the scripture more deeply, I remember noticing more and more how the role of the crowds, the community, the ordinary folks, who so often remain hidden in the background, were highlighted by Mark as those who “got it”, who understood and believed in Jesus long before the religious leaders, scholars and even those closest to him, his disciples. I invite you to join us as we gather to hear what Jesus has to say to us in these weeks ahead. I invite you to join me in entering in with an open mind, a seeking heart and an inquisitive spirit. As we begin this so-called journey into ordinary time, I invite us to gather together to encounter the Sacred Mystery, to dwell in the Good News, to respond with thanksgiving to the awesomeness of God’s Word in and for our very lives! Blessings always, Pastor Erin

From the Board of Deacons

In our ongoing effort to better care for each other, the Deacons are looking to organize and increase our visitations. If you would like to visit members of our church community on behalf of Central Square Congregational Church, or if you would like more information about visitation, please let a Deacon know by:

calling the office at 508-697-6016 leaving a note on the Fellowship Pad filling out a Time and Talent sheet talking to one of us directly

Also, if you know people that would like a visit, please let us know using one of the aforementioned vehicles. Please do not hesitate to tell us about people who may need something. We would rather hear from 4 people that someone is in need than not hear about it at all. If you already visit people “unofficially,” please let us know that too, so we can support you in your efforts. Loneliness and social isolation are serious issues for some in our community. If you (or a loved one) is in need of healing, prayers, celebration, or you just have general concern(s) and need to talk, we are here for you! Please contact the office at 508-697-6016 or via email at [email protected]. Pastor Erin can be reached via email at [email protected]. Anne Malmquist (chair of Deacons) can also be reached via call or text at 617-645-1848, or contact your Deacon. (Whichever avenue you are most comfortable with - please don't hesitate to reach out!)

From the Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees has painstakingly completed the 2018-2019 budget which will be presented to the congregation for approval at the Annual Budget Meeting on Sunday June 10, 2018 following Worship. It would be financially wrong if we asked you to vote with your pocketbooks (or wallets), so, we ask you to vote with your hearts as we present to you, yet, another budget with a deficit, the Board members will be at the meeting to lead a discussion and to answer questions, which we are already anticipating. It seems to be history that the Trustees present budgets with deficits, but it is also history that are doors are still open for Worship and for all the groups who use our building. Please plan to attend. Respectfully submitted, Barbara I. Morey, Co-Chair with Tom Struzik

News from Outreach

Here it is Sunday night, the day before this Outreach Steeple Sounds article is due, and I’m just starting to write. On the other hand, this is better than last month, when I called to stop the presses a day or two too late. Steeple Sounds had been printed and mailed. Thus, at our May Outreach meeting, a peace offering seemed like a good idea so the committee wouldn’t throw all kinds of tasks on me. Kind of like when you don’t show up for a meeting. Popcorn and ice cream seemed to do the trick! We had a good meeting, and the committee is giving me another chance. Also, I got word at coffee hour that I’d better “GET ‘ER DONE”. So anyhow, if you look up Outreach in the dictionary, it shows a picture of Central Square Congregational Church. Actually, there’s not really much of a definition in the Webster’s – to reach out or the act of reaching out. It is also defined as the extent or limit of reach. I think the CSCC Mission Statement says it all – sharing our faith and resources. This week leading up to Memorial Day, and after, let’s reach out to our veterans and their families and thank them! Remember those who gave their lives or have passed since their service. Every year prior to Memorial Day, the Veterans Council, the Boy Scouts, and volunteers go to all the cemeteries in Bridgewater and replace the flags on veterans graves. On Veteran’s Day, a wreath is placed on a veterans memorial at each cemetary, with “Taps” being played. A very moving ceremony and parade are held on the town common. This past year, my uncle Don Surgens passed away at 95 years old. He was a veteran of World War II. My uncle Eric Hanson who lives in Virginia is also a World War II veteran. I’m going to give him a call! We have several veterans and family members or service people here at CSCC, too! Thank you! Be the Church! On behalf of the Outreach Committee, David Hanson

From the Minister of Music

Our choir had a lovely and rousing Pentecost Sunday, during which we sang music having to do with the themes of fire and speaking other languages. We especially enjoyed performing for Reverend Beth’s baby, who came to watch the service! Now we look forward to the summer season of our church. We invite members of our congregation to perform vocal or instrumental solos during the summer. Please contact me at [email protected] if you would like to perform a solo during the summer. We will also soon begin our usual summer tradition of allowing the congregation to choose our hymns, so start thinking about your favorite hymns you would like to hear!

News from Growth Help Keep Our Church Social This Summer! Coffee hour takes a break over the summer, but that doesn't mean our church stops being social! However, WE NEED YOU to make that happen! We need volunteers to set up juice or lemonade after church in July & August. Please keep it simple! Growth has lemonade mix in the kitchen you can use, or bring a juice of your choice. On your week, set up a round table in the Fellowship Hall, or out front under the tree. Mix together some lemonade and set out some plastic cups, then put everything away before you leave. That's it! No bothering with the big coffee pot or coordinating snacks. Sign up for the week at the link below, or contact Sara Terpeny at (703) 303-6247 or [email protected] with the week you can help. News from Christian Education

With my first year as Sunday School Superintendent quickly coming to an end, I can't help but reflect on all of the wonderful experiences working with the younger members of our congregation. One of the goals for myself was to create meaningful learning opportunities, connecting and relating bible stories to the daily lives our our children and youth. Last week, I was painting lawn furniture, listening to music, and thinking about Sunday School. Did I meet my goal? Will the children be able to remember what the bible taught us and apply the life lessons? Did our activities and discussions help the children to see that we should live as God wants us to live? And then suddenly, a Jack Johnson song from my music library began to play and I smiled thinking that the lyrics sum up exactly the lessons we tried to instill each week. I encourage everyone to listen to Jack Johnson singing this beautiful song but for now, here are the lyrics: “My Own Two Hands” – Jack Johnson I can change the world, with my own two hands Make it a better place, oh, with my own two hands Make it a kinder place, with my own two hands With my own With my own two hands I can make peace on earth, oh with my own two hands I can clean up the earth, with my own two hands I can reach out to you, with my own two hands With my own, With my own two hands With my own With my own two hands I'm gonna make it a brighter place, oh, with my own two hands I'm gonna make it a safer place, Oh with my own two hands I'm gonna help the human race, yes oh with my own two hands With my own, With my own two hands With my own, With my own two hands Now I can, I can hold you, oh with my own two hands And I, and I can comfort you, with my own two hands But you got, got to use, oh use your own two hands Use your own, use your own two hands You got to use your own, oh use your own two hands With our own, with our own two hands, With our own, With our own Two hands With my own, With my own Two hands Songwriters: Ben C Harper Thank you for allowing me work with your children this year. Have a fun and safe summer and continue to live life as God wants us to each day! Krissy Cannizzo Sunday School Superintendent

Join us in wishing our youth and their leaders a successful and safe mission trip to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania the week of June 24! In Harrisburg, with the assistance of the Youthworks organization, the youth will engage with the community in a variety of ways. They will join local community development efforts working to improve the life of its residents. They will have the opportunity to serve with local children’s programs, community gardens and senior care facilities. The group will also assist local neighborhood associations with small home repair, community beautification and cleanup projects. In addition, the group will bond and worship with other youth groups, and may visit local tourist and historical attractions. Safe travels all! May the Holy Spirit and the grace of God be with you in all you do! _____________________________________________________________________________

Children’s Sunday is June 10! Sunday, June 10 will be a special day of teachers and children, celebrating the end of the Sunday School church year. Following the service we will once again invite you to make your own ice cream sundae. Calling all expert scoopers!

Do you have an extra bible or two? If you have any extra bibles, the members of our congregation that minister to the Brockton homeless would like to have them. They occasionally get requests from those that they minister to for their own bibles, and we’d like to have a few on hand to provide when requested. If you do, please give them to Rob Basler, or put them in the “Brockton homeless” donation box inside the side door. Thank you!

Pastor

May 2018

Dear Community Friend and Neighbor,

I am the Moderator of Central Square Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, in Bridgewater.

Each year, we host our annual golf tournament that includes golfing, various contests and raffles, a silent

auction, and a catered luncheon. This year, the event is at Olde Scotland Links in Bridgewater, on

Friday, July 27.

The tournament is a fundraiser for the Bridgewater Food Pantry as well as the support costs of our

community outreach. Our church pays expenses such as heat, electricity, and staff to keep the building

open, and our building supports community outreach in creating a home for many local groups. We are

proud to say that girl scouts, boy scouts, twelve-step support groups, community music groups, the

Bridgewater Food Pantry, and Mommy and Me programs are among the many groups that we call

family.

I would like to invite you to support this community fundraiser by signing up to play in the

tournament, taking advantage of one of our sponsorship opportunities, donating a raffle item, or

making a cash donation.

We thank you for the consideration of supporting our event. Please feel free to contact our church if you

have any questions at 508-697-6016, or [email protected].

Sincerely,

Diane Sheibley
