Page 3: UNION CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

Christ is in our midst!

We are grateful, Creator, for sacred water that flows in our bodies and through the earth. Water is a powerful force that both creates and destroys, sustains and erodes, deposits and washes away. Yet, water is wasted, polluted, and ignored…

*HYMN OF PRAISE "There Is a Name I Love to Hear" PASTORAL PRAYER Sharing Joys and Concerns

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. PRAYER RESPONSE "Over My Head"

Over my head, I hear music in the air. Over my head, I hear music in the air. Over my head, I hear music in the air, there must be a God somewhere.

OFFERTORY "Lord, I Want to Be a Christian"

Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart, in my heart; Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart.

In my heart, in my heart, Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart.

*DOXOLOGY Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise God all creatures here below; Praise God for all that Love has done: Creator, Christ, and Spirit, One. Amen.

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION AND COMMITMENT

READING OF SCRIPTURES

Genesis 9:8-17 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him, “As for me, I am establishing my covenant with you and your descendants after you, and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the domestic animals, and every animal of the earth with you, as many as came out of the ark. I establish my covenant with you, that never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of a flood, and never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: I have set my bow in the clouds, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is

seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant that I have established between me and all flesh that is on the earth.” Psalm 25:1-10 To you, O God, I lift up my soul. O my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame; do not let my enemies exult over me. Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous. Make me to know your ways, O God; teach me your paths.

Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all day long. Be mindful of your mercy, O God, and of your steadfast love, for they have been from of old. Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to your steadfast love remember me, for your goodness' sake, O God! Good and upright is God; therefore God instructs sinners in the way. God leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble God's way. All the paths of God are steadfast love and faithfulness, for those who keep God's covenant and God's decrees. 1 Peter 3:18-22 If with heart and soul you’re doing good, do you think you can be stopped? Even if you suffer for it, you’re still better off. Don’t give the opposition a second thought. Through thick and thin, keep your hearts at attention, in adoration before Christ, your Master. Be ready to speak up and tell anyone who asks why you’re living the way you are, and always with the utmost courtesy. Keep a clear conscience before God so that when people throw mud at you, none of it will stick. They’ll end up realizing that they’re the ones who need a bath. It’s better to suffer for doing good, if that’s what God wants, than to be punished for doing bad. That’s what Christ did definitively: suffered because of others’ sins, the Righteous One for the unrighteous ones. He went through it all—was put to death and then made alive—to bring us to God. He went and proclaimed God’s salvation to earlier generations who ended up in the prison of judgment because they wouldn’t listen. You know, even though God waited patiently all the days that Noah built his ship, only a few were saved then, eight to be exact—saved from the water by the water. The waters of baptism do that for you, not by washing away dirt from your

Page 5: UNION CONGREGATIONAL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

skin but by presenting you through Jesus’ resurrection before God with a clear conscience. Jesus has the last word on everything and everyone, from angels to armies. He’s standing right alongside God, and what he says goes. Thanks be to God!

Our dues go to assist the state organization’s endeavors in working for and with our state churches and missions. At Union, we ask our members to help defray some of this expense to our general fund by donating an additional $15.00. If you are able to contribute to this cause, please make your check out to Union Congregation Church and note that it is for “Per Capita Dues”. Thank you.

LENT - FEBRUARY 17- MARCH 28, 2021

The late Representive John Lewis of Georgia talked about stirring up "good trouble" that leads to justice. Jesus stirs up a lot of good trouble in the

Lenten Gospels this year; we are called to prepare ourselves and follow.
