HISTORIA DE HEREDIA
El Contón de Heredio estuvo hobitodo por poblociones indígettcts del Reino
Huetor de Occidente, que o finoles de lo ero precolombino estuvieron boio el clorninio del
Cocique Gorovito. En 1706 olgunos emigrontes de Cortogo fundoron uno errnil<r co¡no
Ayudo de Porroquio en el poroie Alvirillo, reolizóndose el espontóneo poblomiento de lcr
zono. Entre 1716y 1717 se troslodó lo ermito hocio el norte, ol sitio que los notivos
llomobon Cubuiuquí. En 173ó se erigió en Porroquio lo ermito de lo lnmoculodo Concepción
de Cubuiuquí.
En l75l Monseñor Pedro Agustín Morel de Sonto Cruz, Obispo de Nicoroguo y
Co:tcr Riccr fundó lo primero escuelo en Cubuiuquí y lo insfoló boio lo dirección de un
q<r«rrcloto. En ,l845
funcionó el Colegio del Podre Poú|. En I875 inició lecciones el primer
coleq¡lo <lo Scrrr Atr¡ustín que funcionó por cuotro oños, luego se reobrió de I BB4 o I 88ó

Desde i 7ó3 oporece por primero vez el nombre de Heredio en losclocumentos de lo époco. A portir de ese momento se conlinuó llomondo ollugor Villo Heredio o Villo de Cubuiuquí, que luego se conoc¡ó con el nombre devillo vieio. El ló de octubre de I813 se emite un decreto de los cortes decódiz concediendo ol pueblo de villo Nuevo de son José el título de ciudod yel de VILLA o los de Heredio. Aloiuelo y Uiorrós, osí como se le confiere oCortogo el título de Muy Noble y Muy Leol. En este oño, Heredio recibeformolmente el título de villo, ounque se le llomobo qsí desde 1763. El nombrede HEREDIA lo tomó de don Alonso Fernóndez de Heredio quien como presidentede lo Audiencio de Guotemolo le confirió el título de VILLA.
Duronte el siglo XVlll se desorrollo lo porte occidentol del volle centrorformóndose nuevos ceniros de pobloción en lugores como el volle de Borvq. El

En lo ley No. 3ó de 7 de diciembre de 1848 se estobleciólo Provincio de Heredio. El decreto número 167 del z de diciembre de r 848 leconcede o Heredio el título de Contón y le osigno Z distritos porroquioles.

Después de lo independencio en 1821 y grocios o lo exportoción pos-
terior del cofé, se creqron nuevos vínculos intercontinentoles que provocoron un
intercombio culturol, que ofectorío el modo y estilo de construir. Surgieron entonces
los ermitos de Sqnto Domingo (l 829); Sqntq Bórboro (l832).
A portir de 1 85O se iunton cuotro condiciones que generon uno importonterevitolizoción de lo orquitecluro religioso: lo époco de oro del cofé y lo divisiónpolítico-odministrotivq del lerritorio nocionol; el crecimiento demogrófico y el
estoblecimiento de poblodos; lo Ilegodo de ingenieros de lngloterro y Alemonioy; lo creoción de lo Diócesis de Costo Rico. Esto último condición, motivó omuchos pueblos, entre ellos Borvo, Sonfo Domingo, Sonto Bórboro, Son Rofoel,Son lsidro, Belén y Flores, o edificor se ermito, solicitor el grodo de Porroquio yposteriormente iniciqr lo construcción de sus hermosos templos. En el coso de los
nuevos iglesios de Sonto Bórboro, Belén y Soropiquí, éstos se construyen en un
período en que lo orquitecturo religioso tomo otro corocterístico en el ómbitode diseño, rompiendo por primero vez con los órdenes clósicos que hon

Al norte del Contón se encueniro porte de Io Cordillercl Volcónico Cen-
trol y del Porque Nocionol Broulio cqrrillo. Tombién se sitúo el volcón Borvcr con
uno olturo de 2.90ó m.s.n.m. Estos óreos silvestres constituyen porte cle lo segunclcr
biosfero de Costo Rico. Son de los mós visitodos por noturolistcrs y cierltíficos
del mundo, yo que posee montoñqs siempre verdes y bosque de gron clensiclocl,
dondo olbergue o mós de ó.000 especies de plontos, entre ellos orquíclccrs y
helechos, ubicodos en lo moyor porfe de este bosque primor¡o. Otros plonl<rs
son: epifitos (que viven en los órboles dentro de los que encontromos: bromelicts,
musgos¡ líquenes, peperomios, desde luego orquídeos y helechos, osí como otros),
porós¡tos (como el motopolo), y terrestres (en donde destocon gron voriedod
de órboles, qróceos, helechos y otros). Se pueden encontror en el bosque: lcr
donto, el pumo. el ioguor, los monos colorodo, lo congo, el coriblonco, el
monigordo, el tepezcuinte, el venodo, etc. Se hon observodo mós de 342 especics
de oves, incluido el yigüirro (ove nocionol) y el queizol. Asimismo los ronos y los
