GENERAL INFORMATION

1. ENGINE IDENTIFICATION

Caterpillar engines are identified with Serial Numbersand Arrangement Numbers. In some cases, ModificationNumbers are also used. The serial number plate whichshows these numbers is mounted on the engine.

Caterpillar dealers need this information to determinewhich components were included on the engine whenit was assembled at the factory. This permits accurateidentification of replacement part numbers.

Effective First Quarter 2001 the Caterpillar ProductIdentification Number (PIN) changed from 8 to 17characters. In an effort to provide uniform equipmentidentification, Caterpillar and other constructionequipment manufacturers are moving to comply withthe latest version of the product identification numberingstandard. Non-road machine PINs are defined by ISO10261. The new PIN format will apply to all Caterpillarmachines and generator sets. The PIN plates and framemarking will display the 17 character PIN. The newformat will look like the following:

1. Caterpillars World Manufacturing Code (characters1-3)

2. Machine Descriptor (characters 4-8)

3. Check Character (character 9)

4. Machine Indicator Section (MIS) or Product SequenceNumber (characters 10-17). These were previouslyreferred to as the Serial Number.

Machines and generator sets produced before FirstQuarter 2001 will maintain their 8 character PIN format.

Components such as engines, transmissions, axles, etc.and work tools will continue to use an 8 character SerialNumber (S/N).

2. ORDERING PARTS

Quality Caterpillar replacement parts are availablefrom Caterpillar dealers throughout the world. Theirparts inventories are up to date and include allparts normally required to protect your investmentin Caterpillar machines. Dealers may offer repair kitsor remanufactured parts to allow selection of the mosteffective repair alternative for a particular situation.Whenordering parts, your order should specify the quantity,part number, part name, and the serial number/productidentification number of the engine for which the partsare needed.

3. PARTS MANUAL ORGANIZATION

Product information in this manual is presentedas "information elements" that represent all of thecomponents for the specific model. Engine Arrangementand Seat Group are examples of information elements.The information elements are organized alphabeticallyby part name and secondarily by part number withineach major section of the manual.

4. TABLE OF CONTENTS

A table of contents (TOC) is found at the beginning of themanual. The TOC lists each section of the manual witha complete list of all information elements organized asthey appear in the manual. Page numbers are providedfor quick reference to detailed parts identificationillustrations and serviceable consist lists.

5. MAINTENANCE PARTS INDEX

The Maintenance Parts Index, located near thebeginning of the manual, references most frequentlyused maintenance part numbers, providing description,quantity, usage and page number. This information isorganized alphabetically by part description.

The index located near the front of the manual is analphabetical listing of all information elements includedin the manual. Page numbers are provided for quickreference to detailed parts identification illustrations andserviceable consist lists.

7. PART NUMBER INDEX

A numerical index listing all part numbers and thecorresponding page number(s) appears at the back ofthe manual.

8. CAPTIONS

Captions located at the beginning of each informationelement identify the part number and part namealong with additional descriptive information. S/Ninformation found in each caption should be usedto select correct information for a specific engine.Field replacement options, identification of optionalattachment components, and where used ("part of")information is also provided.

The first line of a caption is shown in larger type fontto indicate the beginning of an information element.Captions for additional pages that may be requiredto illustrate an information element will be shown instandard type font and will include the term (contd.) .

9. NON-SERVICED PARTS

In some instances it is necessary to display non-servicedparts that are a link to lower level serviceable consist lists.These non-serviced part numbers are shown in italic typeindicating that they are not available. All consist lists havenot been converted to reflect this enhancement.

10. PARTS LIST REFERENCE NUMBERS

Numbers shown in the Ref No column correspondto numbers used in the associated graphic(s). Analphabetic suffix may be added to a reference number toidentify lower level consist items. Numbers shown in theGraphic Ref column refer to the graphic number identifierdisplayed in the lower left corner of each illustration. TheGraphic Ref number may be used in combination withthe item Ref No to determine the correct part number.There may be intentional omission of a Ref No in aconsist list as information is updated to reflect the latestserviceable part numbers.

11. INDENTED PART NAMES

When a part name is indented in a parts list, it is partof (included in) the group or assembly under which it isindented.

12. ILLUSTRATION REFERENCE LETTERS

When necessary, illustrations contain reference letters(A, B, C etc.) that are intended to track lines andharnesses from one point to another. They are also usedto show where to reconnect illustrations that have beenseparated.

14. REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR GENERATORS

Only those generators which are sold and servicedexclusively by "Caterpillar" Dealers are illustrated onthe following pages. Externally-regulated "Caterpillar"Diesel Electric Sets are equipped with generators madeby other manufacturers. Parts for these generators areNOT serviced by Caterpillar Inc. Parts lists and partsshould be ordered from the manufacturer whose nameis shown on the Generator Name Plate, always givingthe generator rating and serial number shown.

15. DESCRIPTION OF TYPE CHANGES

Type - A type is defined as any configuration changethat requires an additional Information Element for anArrangement, Group, or Assembly. If serial numberbreaks for types are not available, a type # ( Type 1,Type 2, etc.) will be displayed in the caption. These"type" changes are identified with a "C" note (changefrom previous type) in the Parts List. Only the "types" thatapply to this Parts Manual will be included. Additionaltypes may exist causing "C" notes to appear on anInformation Element when no other types are shown.

Leurs stocks de pices sont constammentrapprovisionns et comptent toutes les picesncessaires pour assurer la bonne marche de vosmachines Caterpillar. Certains concessionnairesproposent galement des kits de rparation ou despices rnoves, ce qui permet de choisir la solutionla plus conomique dans une situation donne. Lorsdes commandes de pices, mentionner la quantit,le numro de pice et la dsignation des pices ainsique le numro de srie/numro didentification (PIN) dumoteur pour lequel ces pices sont requises.

3. ORGANISATION DU CATALOGUE DE PICES

Les renseignements sur les produits sont prsents sousforme de "Information element" (lment dinformation)reprsentant tous les composants dun modle donn."Engine Arrangement" (version de moteur) et "SeatGroup" (assemblage de sige)" sont des exemplesdlments dinformation. Les lments dinformationsont classs par ordre alphabtique par la dsignationstandard des pices et par numros de pices danschaque partie importante du manuel.

4. TABLE DES MATIRES

La table des matires se trouve au dbut du manuel. Latable des matires fournit la liste de tous les chapitresdu manuel avec une liste complte de tous les lmentsdinformation classs par ordre dapparition dans lemanuel. Les numros de page sont fournis afin quelutilisateur puisse trouver rapidement les illustrationsdtailles concernant lidentification des pices et leslistes des pices dentretien.

Lesrenseignements concernant les numros de srie (S/N)qui se trouvent dans chaque lgende doivent treutiliss pour slectionner les informations correctespour un moteur donn. Les informations concernant lesoptions de remplacement sur le chantier, lidentificationdes composants des quipements offerts en option etles lieux dapplication sont aussi fournies.

Les lettres de la premire ligne dune lgende sontprsentes en police plus grande afin dindiquer le dbutdune unit dinformation. Les lgendes qui pourraienttre requises pour des pages supplmentaires afindillustrer une unit dinformation seront prsentes enpolice standard et comprendront le terme ( suivre).

9. PICES NON FOURNIES

Dans certains cas, il est ncessaire dindiquer les picesnon fournies qui sont en aval de la liste des picesdentretien. Les numros des pices non fournies dansla liste des pices et les lgendes seront en italique poursignaler quils ne sont pas disponibles.

10. NUMROS DE RFRENCE DE LA LISTE DESPICES

Les numros indiqus dans la colonne des numros derfrences correspondent aux numros utiliss dansles illustrations auxquelles ils sont associs. Un suffixealphabtique peut tre ajout un numro de rfrencepour identifier la liste des articles en aval. Les numrosindiqus dans la colonne de rfrence de lillustrationrenvoient lidentification du numro affich dans lecoin infrieur gauche de chaque illustration. Le numrode rfrence de lillustration pourrait tre utilis avecle numro de rfrence de larticle pour dterminer lenumro de pice correct. Il peut y avoir une omissionintentionnelle dun numro de rfrence dans une listede pices suite la mise jour des informations en vuede reflter les numros de pices les plus rcentes.

11. INDENTED PART NAMES (DSIGNATIONS DEPICES EN RETRAIT)

Lorsquune dsignation de pice est en retrait, cela veutdire que larticle en regard fait partie de lensemble souslequel il figure.

12. LETTRES DE RFRENCE DES ILLUSTRATIONS

Quand cela est ncessaire, les illustrations comportentdes lettres de rfrence (A, B, C, etc.) pour montrer letrajet des canalisations et faisceaux de cbles dun point lautre. Elles sont utilises galement pour indiquer orelier les illustrations spares auparavant.
