ANTIQUES INFO - July/August 08
Carlton Ware and the MarketBetween 1890 and 1957 Carlton Ware was produced by a company called Wiltshaw
& Robinson who occupied the Carlton Works in Stoke-on-Trent. The Company
name seemed always to have been played down and the earliest backstamps appear
only with the initials W & R. The name Carlton Ware was in use on backstamps as
early as c1894 and became the trademark for the company from the very earliest
days. The cursive Carlton Ware mark appears about 1925, followed by MADE IN
ENGLAND, followed by TRADE MARK. The latter appears to be dropped quite
quickly leaving the cursive mark and MADE IN ENGLAND on their own until
1957. I have also noticed on early wares, which still have the words TRADE
MARK, the additional upper case addition REGISTRATION APPLIED FOR. The
foregoing represents only an introduction to Carlton Ware as the main purpose of
this feature is to discuss the market.
Here are about a 100 images, descriptions and prices representing sales at auction
during the last several years. I have left out a lot of sales from the lower end of the
market. These range from about a £1,000 down to £10 with an average of about
£160 so at least the selection is worthy of study. Looking beyond these pages to the
wider market I am certain that the most ever paid at auction for Carlton Ware was
at Tennants in Leyburn in North Yorkshire in May, 2006 when a Devil vase, pattern
3767 and only 16cms in height reached £2,500 hammer, about £3,000 including
premium. The estimate was £180-£220. Another vase Mephistopheles, pattern 3765
and only 19cms in height, fetched £2,300 hammer or about £2,750 including
premium at Bearnes in Exeter in 2007. This also had a low estimate of £400-£450.
Fairy, a rare Carltonware footed dish, 30cms in width and designed by Violet
Elmer, pattern 3576 was given a high estimate of £1,500-£2,000 at Woolley &
Wallis, Salisbury in November 2005 and duly obliged with a hammer price of
£2,000 or about £2,500 including premium. To my knowledge these are the only
lots that have reached over £2,000 at auction although a ‘handcraft’ wall plaque,
showing a girl in a crinoline walking in a garden, with an early pattern 1908, and
estimated at £400-£600 fetched £900, which equates to over £1,000 with premium
at Lyon & Turnbull, Edinburgh in April 2005. This quite superb plaque was 39cms
in width. It is in complete contrast to a later charger, c1935 by Violet Elmer at
32cms in width which fetched £760 hammer or about £900 including premium at
Woolley & Wallis a year later. Coffee sets can also do very well. A c1931 Violet
Elmer design, pattern 3450 fetched £1,500 hammer at the same auction and
Tyrolean Bands, a tea-for-two by Violet Elmer, pattern 4076, £800 hammer in 2005
at the same auction. Note that in these pages at 2 a coffee set, pattern 3450 again
and called Awakening reached only £740 hammer at Louis Taylor in 2006. Don’t
go overboard on coffee sets unless you know what you are about. See 46, 47, 51
and 54, where rouge royale and bleu royale sets averaged only £84 hammer.
It is worth now looking at the plentiful Guinness Carlton Ware and in particular at
the advertising Toucan lamps. I have selected four for these pages. See 25, 26, 31
and 42. Note also penguins at 23 and 30. To my knowledge, at 25 is the most ever
paid at auction, being £220 hammer at Amersham Auction Rooms in 2001 when
the market was much stronger. £310 has been paid back in 2003 but this also had
its lamp. Today’s market is lower. I have checked results since 2006 and over at
least a dozen sales the hammer prices have reached between £150 and £190. The
top end of the market in Carlton Ware is of course resisting the middle and lower
market downward trend where Carlton Ware is just too plentiful and that is the
problem, as well as Ebay. Furthermore the fashion for the twentieth century,
peddled continuously by the television media simply cannot be maintained on the
bases of quality and certainly not rarity. Much of it is common or garden. Hopefully
the days are gone when collectors were prepared to pay more for basic twentieth
century useful wares than I have seen paid for first period Worcester or English
delft or even eighteenth century saltglaze, all quite rare areas of the market. Despite
the financial pressures in the present economy it is surprising how resilient the
collectors market has remained. Finally I think it useful to compare Carlton Ware
prices with the Moorcroft feature which follows. Whilst I have restricted the
Moorcroft to examples over a £1,000 hammer I was easily able to find over a
hundred examples compared to only three or four for Carlton Ware.
