Course Overview/Intended Audience
Since its development in 1938, electroconvulsive therapy hasremained a crucial part of the psychiatrist’s armamentariumin the treatment of major mental illness. Continued researchhas resulted in numerous refinements in treatment technique.Recommendations in the last decade regarding optimal practicehave included important new ideas regarding patient selection, stimulus dose titration and outpatient maintenance strategies. The International Society for ECT and Neurostimulation (ISEN), inaccordance with its mission to promote the safe and effective useof ECT, commissioned a task force in 1997 to study the trainingand credentialing of clinicians in this treatment modality. As aresult of this task force, this full-day course on ECT, with exam, was developed. This course has been developed for psychiatristsand other physicians involved in the administration of ECT.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:
■ identify the indications for electroconvulsive therapy andassessment of appropriate patients
■ evaluate patients for unilateral and bilateral treatment anddetermine appropriate stimulus settings for present ECTdevices
■ identify and manage common ECT complications■ develop effective continuation and maintenance treatment
strategies for patients with recurrent illness

Course Overview/Intended Audience
In October 2008, the FDA approved the use of TranscranialMagnetic Stimulation (TMS) for a specific population ofpatients with depression. This course has been developed toprovide accurate and practical information to practitioners whohave an interest in setting up a clinical TMS service. Didacticsessions will cover how TMS works, safety issues, efficacy datafor depression, and regulations, policies and financial consider-ations concerning TMS. Patient selection, treatment planning, and managing patients during and after TMS will be thor-oughly reviewed. Practicum sessions will provide demonstra-tions in device set-up, mapping of the motor cortex and motorthreshold (MT) determination. A certificate will be providedfor participants who attend this full day course and pass theexam.
This course has been developed for psychiatrists and nursesinterested in the administration of TMS for depression.
Objectives
At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:
■ list the indications for TMS use in patients with depression■ identify the risks and side effects of TMS■ identify and manage common TMS complications■ describe regulatory issues and policies concerning TMS■ describe how to manage patients during TMS treatment
and through a treatment series■ define the role of nurses in TMS■ define the requirements for setting up a clinical TMS service
