The P.O. is pleased to offer the gift card or "Scrip/Gelt" program, designed to help families earn money to apply towards their students' Shabbatonim, Junior Class trip, and Senior Israel Experience. By purchasing gift cards through the school for vendors where you ordinarily shop (groceries, gas, household items, etc), a percentage of what you spend each time will be placed in your family's account to be used for these trips. As the Va'ad said so well, the key to the Sukkah

Hop is sometimes the HOP rather than the

sukkah! Due to rain, we began the annual

tradition this year with appetizers in the Shapiro

Dining Hall

and headed

over to Moriah

for pizza and

desserts. No

Sukkah this

year, but

plenty of hop!

President Eli Schrayer and VP of Programming

Bobbi Hochberg introduced the program to the

school and students spent the entire afternoon

socializing with friends and faculty about topics

ranging from favorite all-time television series to

where to study in Israel post-high school. Thank

you to Moriah Congregation for opening their

doors to our community and to the Vales and

Foresters for volunteering their Sukkot!

Taught by Carl Schrag

Thursdays, Begins Oct 23

This class provides a strong text-based historical overview from the late 19th century through today. The complexity of the conflict forces us to grapple with issues of religion, culture, history, politics, economics, identity and survival- all reflected through primary sources. Tuition: $290 for each of the two 10-

class sessions. (NOTE: NSSBE members will be able to register for $240@, as they will receive a $50 subsidy.) To register go to the BJE website. For further information, including scholarships available through the Marcia Fisher Webb Adult Education Fund, contact

with the first student presentation in our Gender

and Judaism minyan. Sarah led us in a

conversation about "Feminism and the Feminine

in Orthodoxy." With a PowerPoint which spanned

the Lubavitcher Rebbe to Beyonce, Sarah

engaged her fellow students in a stimulating

overview of and conversation about the limits,

challenges, and opportunities for women within

centrist and open Orthodoxy, the difference

between a commitment to the feminine and

being a feminist, and the role of a siddur in

enhancing women's tefillah experience or

rendering them marginal. Sarah's presentation

inspired her peers to lean in and volunteer for

the next rounds of student-led discussions and

presentations.

North Shore Candidates Forum

Monday night was the North Shore Candidates

Forum, sponsored by nearly thirty synagogues

and local Jewish institutions. The event featured

candidates for Illinois Attorney General,

Treasurer, and Comptroller, candidates for the

Illinois House and Senate, and U.S. House

candidates Brad Schneider, Bob Dold, Suzanne

Atanus, and Jan Schakowsky. Members of the

CJHS U.S. Politics Club took a leadership role in

the program, starting by attending a session

beforehand with David Prystowsky of the JCRC

on issues of civic engagement in American

society. During the Forum itself, students

worked one-on-one with candidates to guide

them through the event, and read descriptions

of the various positions represented at the

Forum. It was a great opportunity for our

students to engage with community leadership

and the political process.

USPC senior Sari Mishell reports, "It was so

informative to hear all of the different candidates

share their views. It was also so amazing that

the CJHS students were able to participate in

such an important event as the candidate

forum."

A Night at the Opera

On Wednesday, October 22, CJHS students and

associates will have a unique opportunity to see

a fabulous production of Mozart's The Marriage

of Figaro, Live in HD from the Metropolitan

Opera in New York City! In addition to the

close-up camera work that will give our

Chicagoland viewers the best seats in the house,

the production will also include

exclusive interviews with the performers and

designers! The free bus will leave CJHS at

5:15 p.m. and return after 10:20 when the

opera is over. Tickets will be $24 (or $22 if

you're over 60). RSVP to Ms. Friedman,

[email protected], by October 20, so we can

get a headcount for the bus!

Blood Drive

Page 7: Chag sameach

Students were "pumped up" this week by the

CJHS Blood Drive. Students and faculty came

together to donate twenty units of blood, and

did it all with smiles on their faces. Needles and

iodine were no match for the desire of Tigers

young and old to perform a mitzvah and help

save lives. Thank you to the Heartland Blood

Center for facilitating our donation, and to the

Va'ad Studentim for organizing and running the

Blood Drive. Stay tuned for another chance to donate this Spring!

Cross Country Sloshes To Victory

Despite the intense downpour of rain, our spirits

and hearts were not dampened. Stomping

through puddles of mud, the Cross Country

team won the Junior Varsity and Varsity

Men's race, leaving the meet with a trophy

in hand and an undesired extra layer of

mud. The CJHS Cross Country team did not

surrender to the threatening weather conditions,

and we gloriously sang and danced as we

cheered each other on with full support. In the

Junior Varsity race, winner Josh Pliskin finished

first, followed by Sol Treister, Liam Lynch,

and Adam Gilman, CJ taking places #1-4.

Junior Ranan Vales reports, "Our victory was

an uplifting end to the season, and a great

reward for all of our hard work throughout the

past two months!"

faculty tricked out in

on our graduating

senior girls. Co-

captain Carly Silvers

reports, "Tuesday's

game was so much

fun! The stands were filled and everyone was

cheering really loudly. Unfortunately, we lost,

but it was a really close game and we fought the

entire way through." Northtown may have won

the battle, but we are over $300 closer to

winning the war against cancer!

A Taste of Torah: Sukkot and Ushpizin

Page 14: Chag sameach

I was very confused when looking through

Ushpizin, to discover that we attribute to Yaakov

the characteristics of tiferet, or harmony and

honesty. Yaakov's life is pretty much in chaos at

this point -- he is certainly not in harmony with

his family and he has just lied to his father. Why

do we remember Yaakov as harmonious and

honest?

One way to look at it is that we are supposed to

learn from Yaakov's mistakes, do what he could

not. I think that Yaakov's encounter with G-d

changed him so much that he got his life in

order. As a result of his experience, he became

more balanced and honest. The text supports

this argument because after Yaakov wakes up

from his dream, he exclaims that G-d is with him

and will be his guide.
