Chanukah Blessings How we light the Chanukiyah (Chanukah menorah):

Candles are added to the Chanukiyah each night, starting from the right side and filling in towards the left, but are kindled in the opposite direction (from left to right) so that we always light the newest candle first. We begin by lighting the shamash or helper candle, and then use it to kindle the rest of the lights, saying or singing together:

Ner Shel Tzedakah: Candle of Righteousness

As we light this “Ner Shel T’zedakah” tonight, we pray that its light will shine into the dark corners of our world, bringing relief to those suffering from the indignity and pain the accompany poverty. May our act of giving inspire others to join with us in the fight against the scourge of hunger, homelessness, need and want. Together, let us raise our voices to cry out for justice, and may that clarion call burst through the night’s silence and declare that change must come.

A Blessing to Recite on the 6th Night of Chanukah:

Ner Shel Tzedakah ("Candle of Righteousness") is a project in which families and individuals devote the sixth night of Chanukah to learning about the problem of poverty. They donate the value of the gifts (or the gifts themselves) that otherwise would be exchanged on that night to organizations that assist the poor, locally or globally. By making donations on the sixth night of Chanukah, families help

the Jewish candle of righteousness glow brightly for those in need.

Don’t let the light go out!

Gather as a family to discuss ways to donate the value of Chanukah presents received.

A possibility is Temple Concord’s current project, sponsoring the Samaritan Center Annual Christmas Dinner. Instead of giving of your personal time this year, we ask for a financial contribu-

tion to help cover the cost of the dinner and essential items (gloves, hats, socks, hand warmers) to be handed out when families pick up their meals.

Ingredients:

6 medium potatoes

1 medium onion

2 eggs slightly beaten

1/2 cup flour

1/4 teaspoon pepper

1 teaspoon salt

Vegetable oil or preferred oil for frying

Grate the potatoes - A food processor can make this job much easier! Place the grated

potatoes in a bowl. Finely chop the onion, and add it into the grated potatoes. Add two

eggs, and salt and pepper to taste. Add flour—roughly 1/2 cup. As you mix the batter

you will see if it is runny or not. If it seems runny, add more flour until it reaches a thicker

consistency. If you accidentally add too much flour, don’t worry—adding water will solve

the problem! Place spoonfuls of the batter into a a preheated pan with oil. Flip when the

edges brown, and when finished, place on a paper towel to drain excess oil. Enjoy!

Makes 12-15 latkes (depending on their size)

Variations:

Use sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes

Use 3 potatoes and a zucchini

Which hand is best to light the menorah with?

Neither, it’s best to light it with a candle.

What’s the best thing to put into the sufganiyot?

Your teeth.

Heavenly Money Levi was thinking about life and asked God how much a penny was worth in heaven because he was always told "A penny for your thoughts."

God said, "One million dollars."

Levi asked if time was the same. It wasn't.

Levi asked, "How long is a minute?"

God said, "A million years."

Levi thought about it and said, "God, can I have a penny?"

God said, "Sure, in a minute."

Chanukah Mailing

A woman goes to the post office to buy stamps for her Chanukah cards. She says to the clerk, "May I have 50 Chanukah stamps?" The clerk says, "What denomination?" The woman says, "Oh my Goodness. Has it come to this? Give me 6 Orthodox, 12 Conservative, and 32 Reform."

A latke gave his mother a gift.

As he did so, she said to him, “Awww, why are you so sweet?”

He replied, “I guess that’s just the way I yam.”

What did the stamp say to the Hanukkah card?

Stick with me and we’ll go places.
