RABBI’S MESSAGEA Season of Change and Renewal

My first month as Rabbi at Temple Israel has flown by. Much of the time was spent completing the move here fromVermont and adjusting to a very different climate andculture. Alexandra and I are both very happy to be here and have appreciated the warm welcomes we’ve received from our new Temple family. The warm temperatures, however, may take me a little longer to appreciate.

While I’ll miss the fresh apple cider and autumn colors ofVermont, there is much I look forward to here at TempleIsrael in the months ahead. For example, I look forward to our religious school’s opening day on August 26th. I am eager to partner with our children, teens, parents, teachers and staff as we create new ways for young families to get involved. If you have children or teens, it’s likely you and they will benefit from (and enjoy!) taking part in our new youth programming.

I also look forward to the High Holy Days, which are right around the corner. This season of repentance and return (teshuvah) is a time to explore what Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel calls “radical amazement.” The sense of awe and reverence the term suggests is so essential to our well-being that our scriptures say it is the beginning of wisdom (Psalm 111:10, Proverbs 9:10.) So, too, is it the beginning of our Jewish New Year as it is an important theme during the upcoming ten “Days of Awe” (Yamim Nora-im.) I lookforward to this period as a time for deepening my ownspiritual practice and for rebuilding and strengthening the spiritual core of our community.

Leading up to the High Holy Days, we’ll have an opportunity to prepare ourselves for this work. Judaism designates theentire Hebrew month of Elul, which begins this year onAugust 19th, as a time for reflecting on themes relatingto atonement. Rabbi Mitch and I will offer workshops onpreparing for the High Holy Days and we’ll conduct a“Selichot” service on September 8th, which will provide yet another point of entry. As a new year ushers in beginnings, including new friendships, I hope to meet most of ourTemple family in the days leading up to and including theYamim Nora-im.

In the months that follow, I’ll do my best to reach out, but I ask you to help me by staying involved, coming to programs and services when you can, and letting me get to knowyou. It may take ongoing contact for us to become betteracquainted over time, but it will not take long for the spirit of friendship and collaboration to become a defining trait of Temple Israel. I have already come to appreciate it in thewarmth that’s been extended to my wife and me so soon after our arrival.

Even though Miami’s summer heat is likely to continuefor a few more months, a season of change and renewal isalready upon us. We have new ways for young families to get involved, an opportunity to open ourselves to a sense of “radical amazement,” and a community that embodies the spirit of friendship and collaboration. These are good ways for approaching a new year and what may be a new era in our Temple’s history.

..........................................................................................................................................................................................

It would indeed be an understatementto say that I am humbled to findmyself writing this, my first column in Chai Lites. Everything happened so fast. And I am PROUD- proud to be the new President of Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

Many of you know my history with the Temple, but for those who don’t, I will summarize it. I found myself attending meetings and community functions at Temple Israel often while I was active early on in the AIDSarena and Rabbi Rex Perlmeter was a pioneer in addressing the issues related to HIV and AIDS. Whenever we needed a large meeting space, he would freely offer the Temple. I had attended different types of “New Age” churches in those days, trying to find a place that felt like home. I bounced around a bit and then when Jeff Kahn was the Rabbi atTemple Israel, he made a concerted effort to reach outto the Gay and Lesbian community. James Weinkle, theExecutive Director at the time, doesn’t remember this, but he offered reduced membership fees to the Gay communityfor a while and it seemed like a good time to return to myJewish roots. This was October, 1998- and I never looked back.

I became very active with Social Justice programming at the Temple and my friend Bruce Jay recruited me as the Vice Chair of the Social Justice committee. I found my Jewish home where I could realize my potential spiritually, socially and intellectually. Temple Israel became very important in my life. Finally, a synagogue that would welcome me with open arms- this was considered very risky in those days. A synagogue had always been my safe space as a child. I was blessed to grow up being inspired by an incredible Rabbi and an angelic-like Cantor. My early days of Judaism set me on a path that became familiar and comfortable.

So, what now? My personal issues aside, I have a greatpassion for the continuity of Judaism. I have made 3 fairly recent trips to Israel, and I am itching to go back. I see that Temple Israel is unique among the synagogues I am now free to attend and I see the need to juggle the richness of our 90-year history, the challenge of the present, and the promise of our future as we move forward towards our Centennial. I am inspired to join in the process to solidify Temple Israel of Greater Miami as THE Center for Progressive Judaism in our urban core.

So, how is that going to come about? I firmly believe that we are well positioned for our next surge: a new Rabbi, Tom Heyn, our Scholar in Residence, Mitch Chefitz, and a cadre of

“TED talks, ideas worth spreading”initiated in 1984 focused around the convergence of technology, entertainment and design. The talks are often profound andprovide incentive for furtherexploration and personaldevelopment. As I look back at my Jewish education, I recognize four

Jewish “TED talks” I never heard, but wish I had. They would have made my future education much more graceful.

To my knowledge, there aren’t any Jewish “TED talks.” We might have TED-style talks, but they couldn’t be called TED. Maybe, “MOSHE-talks.” Here are the four “TED-style Moshe-talks” I wish I had heard.

The Evolution of Jewish Text, how the Torah became Torah –the sum total of Jewish wisdom. It would be a demonstration of how spiritual light came through the letters of the writtenTorah, the books of the Prophets and the Writings, tocrystalize in Midrash and Commentaries, and then give way to Mishnah, the oral Torah, a new expression of the revelationat Sinai, and the Talmud, and its commentaries and codes . . .To have such a Moshe-talk at the beginning of one’s seriousJewish learning would be awesome! It would put all text into perspective, and one would know where one was on the timeline of Jewish history whenever one picked up a Jewish text. I regret I never heard that talk, but now, forty years later, I know how to give it.

The Kabbalah – The Evolution of Jewish Spiritual Practice. When I first began my Jewish learning, I had no idea there was Jewish spiritual practice. I didn’t know there was Jewishmeditation that led to deep Contemplation and profoundInsight. I regret I never heard this Moshe-talk, but now, forty years later, I know how to give it.

The Discipline of Jewish Prayer. I thought Jewish prayer was something that was mumbled in Hebrew or done responsively in English. Who knew there was a real discipline, that beganwith physical stretching and breathing and ended withstanding in the Presence of the Divine? I regret I never heard this Moshe-talk, but now, forty years later, I know how to give it.

The Cycles of Jewish Time. I knew about Shabbat, of course. And, Rosh Hashannah and Yom Kippur. And, circumcision, weddings and funerals. But no one ever told me about the great cycles of time, from single days to periods of two thousand years, or the great cycle of a life time from birth to death. I regret I never heard this Moshe-talk, but now, forty years later, I know how to give it.

The television sits on the floor…cable box in close proximity, but still not connected, as I take the day to unpack my treasuredmusic collection…I am an audiophile.

Unpacking my collection of LPs even my coveted Peaches record store crate, to me was a blissful task. For those unfamiliar with the term

LP, it means long playing vinyl recordings. Yes, I still havevinyl…about six hundred albums, give or take a few. I eyed the cherished contents of the boxes, it was like bumping into old friends after a separation of many years…Madama Butterfly (Price and Tucker), La Boheme (Moffo and Tucker) my prized recordings of my cousin, Richard Tucker, (z”l). Hmm, I recall only having these in cd box sets.

As I continue to unpack I come across albums in randomorder by artists: Simon and Garfunkel, Perez Prado, Tina Turner, Cat Stevens, Anita Baker, Herman’s Hermits (really?), Herb Alpert, Billy Joel, Dan Fogelberg, funny, two Netherlands albums, Donovan, Gordon Lightfoot, two Summer Side of Life? Huh? Joni Mitchell-I smile, as I remember seeing her live at Stonybrook when I was 15. Judy Collins? Elvis? Nurit Galron?I don’t remember buying these. “Big” Tiny Little and hishonky tonk piano? Okay, wait just a minute!

It all came flooding back to me...a collection of approximatelythree hundred albums was given to me as a gift in 1994. They belonged to my rabbi, teacher and mentor, JerryPotack, (z”l). I remember now that back then, I found itpeculiar, when I realized that my rabbi and I had similar taste in music…well, except for maybe Johnny Puleo and hisharmonica gang! I tried to envision him listening to artists in his collection: Ian and Sylvia, Dionne Warwick or even Peter, Paul & Mary. They were his albums, so why was it so difficult to imagine? After all, he was just a man. Just a man…

I am reminded that he passed away in August almostimmediately after I began my path in Jewish communalservice as Congregation Agudath Achim’s Executive Director, and he was its spiritual leader. His untimely death, my first call to action as a director, could have easily dissuaded me, but actually helped me to make a decision to continue to pursue this oftentimes difficult and challenging path in the hopes of making a difference. What I took away from that experience is that the rabbi, who the community looked to for guidance, as a teacher, and mentor…was also human. He

A MUSICAL INTERLUDE

Alan MasonDirector of Music and

Doctor of Musical Arts

I recently had the wonderfulexperience of presenting aShavuot musical program with Rabbi Danny Freelander, Senior Vice President for the Union for Reform Judaism. The programfocused on the wanderings of Ruth and Naomi, the gift ofTorah to the Jewish people, and our acceptance of the strangerin our midst. I selected themusic from Kol B’Seder, acollection of pop inspired songs on sacred texts composed by Cantor Jeff Klepper and Rabbi Danny Freelander. Thiscollection, written in the 1970’s, launched the pop music movement in reform synagogues. The prayer settings are melodious, rhythmic, catchy, easy to learn, and very beautiful. Many are familiar to our congregation, and are sung often in our Shabbat and holiday services.

Rabbi Freelander has been a supportive and generousmentor to me since our meeting in 2001 at the NorthAmerican Jewish Choral Festival. He has met with me in the New York office of the URJ on many occasions, and it is at his suggestion that I am regularly invited to play for the regional and national biennial conventions of the Union for ReformJudaism. At our recent Shavuot lecture and performance he surprised me with his extensive knowledge of Temple Israel, its history, its past, and its present. I was delighted and proud to know that the national offices of the URJ are so aware of Temple Israel of Greater Miami.

NOTES FROM THE ECC

...........................................................................................................................................................................................

It is with great pride that we announce that on June 26, 2012, we were awarded the Platinum Award of CommunitiesPutting Prevention to Work Grant given by the Department of Children and Families, Health Department, Make Healthy Happen Miami and Consortium for a Healthier Miami-Dade. This award was given to our center for implementing in our classes and in our children’s daily lives, the “Make Healthy Happen Miami Age-Appropriate Lesson Plan.” We teach our children, among other topics, the importance of food safety, and how to discover fun ways to move, exercise, and dance to stay active. In addition, our children practice liter-acy learning through rhyming word recognition, hand-voice coordination while learning to rhyme, spatial relationships, listening skills and more.

Another award was presented to our school during abreakfast ceremony on May 7, 2012. Our center wasnominated by the Wells Fargo Bank Branch Team at Pembroke Park to receive a $1,000 Community Partner Grant from Wells Fargo, and we received it. The goal of Wells Fargo is to build strong and vibrant communities, improve the qualityof life, and make a positive difference. They considered our organization as vital in accomplishing these goals as well as many others. Special thanks to Darren Steinbook, father of ECC student Stella Steinbook and Pembroke Park Branch Manager, who recommended our center and was our partner in this endeavor, and to our wonderful, amazing, dedicated teachers for all they do to enhance our children’s lives.

We are so proud of our award-winning ECC!

more information!

We wish all our little ones a happy and wonderful vacation! We thank all of our ECC families and ECC staff for making this summer camp program the best one for our children.

....................................................................................

Summer camp has been a wonderful experience for our children at the Joni and Stanley Tate Early Childhood Center. Summer camp is fun-filled and exciting - a place where the children have the opportunity to explore, grow, develop new skills, and form lasting friendships in a safe and nurturingenvironment. Our curriculum is what our children are used to, developmentally appropriate and relying on our teachers as facilitators in each child’s road to knowledge. Our daysinclude Circle Time, Story Time, outside and water play, snack, lunch, naps, field trips, Shabbat celebration, and specialactivities every Friday.

We welcomed the summer by hosting Yo Gabba Gabba and his friends. During this celebration we honored all of our daddies on their day. We jumped and laughed again and again on Bounce House Day. We loved the Magician’s magic tricks. The month of July began and our camp was decked out in patriotic colors for our huge 4th of July celebration. Then we honored the Olympic Games in London by having a specialcarnival day full of games, prizes and popcorn. The farm came to our camp, and we enjoyed the animals by petting and feeding them.

August will be another exciting month in our Summer Camp program. We will have our annual Bike Race, where childrencan ride their bikes, stop by the bike wash station, and learn about the traffic signs. As part of our end of summercelebration, a fire truck from the Miami Fire EducationDepartment will visit our camp. The children will participate in fire life safety training. The firefighter will show and explain to the children all about their equipment and allow them to briefly pass through the cabin of the fire truck.

We want to invite all of our ECC families for a special Shabbat lead by Rabbi Tom Heyn on Friday, August 24th at 3:30p.m. in the Chapel. Join us for a welcoming celebration of our new Rabbi.

The Sababa Shabbat program will take place on the firstFriday of every month, starting in September. Stay tuned for

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS

Like a metaphorical angel, I stand with our k’hillah k’dosha (holy community) and with every teacher and parent as we whisper “grow, grow” to our youngest congregants, fulfilling the Talmudic forecast.

For those of you whom I have not met personally sincecoming to Temple Israel of Greater Miami in late 2004, I am taking this opportunity to reintroduce myself as the Interim Religious School Director for this coming year, and, in turn, reintroducing our Religious School.

My formal training comes from the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion where I earned Masters Degrees in both Jewish Education and Jewish Communal Service. Ireceived the distinguished title of Reform Jewish Educator (RJE) in 2011 while serving at Temple Beth Am in Pinecrest. Over the past 8 years I have worked with day and religious schools, youth groups and most recently served as one the spiritual leaders in Poland and Israel on the March of theLiving.

On a more personal note… Many of you know of my lifepartner’s current work with NeXT@19th Street on thecampus of Temple Israel. Jenni Person and I also joyfullydesigned and participated in “Torah Tykes” from 2005-2008, offering “zero to 5s” and their families a minyan we could call our own each Shabbat. Golda, age 9 and Isaiah, age 6 are our hardy “leaves of grass” (homage to both theTalmudists and Walt Whitman!) and joyful Religious School participants in their own right.

In partnership with Rabbi Tom we are looking forward to adynamic year that begins on Sunday, August 26. I lookforward to connecting with all of our school age parents, by phone at the least, prior to that date in order to gaugeparticular aspirations for our revised setting. In themeantime do not hesitate to contact me and spread theproverbial grass seed to friends who are also looking for a kind community, a developing spiritual identity and in the context of Jewish tradition.

JOIN OUR COMMUNITY PROGRAMS

The Dorothy Serotta Social Justice Forum’s volunteerprogram at the Chapman Partnership for the Homeless has been gaining momentum. New volunteers have beenparticipating on the fourth Monday evening of each month. Participants help in a variety of tasks, such as serving food and general meal preparation. Temple members have found the evening to be a productive and rewarding experience.Interested members can contact [email protected].

The Community Garden planting program is scheduled toresume in September. However, attracting volunteers to help weed and water the garden’s vegetables and edible plants on a regular basis has been a challenge. The Temple looks forward to continue donating the produce to Lotus House, a shelter for abused women and their children. Lotus House residents have also participated in the garden upkeep. However, if there are not enough volunteers to donate some time on a weekly basis (garden access can be flexibleas to day and time), continuation of the garden could be put in jeopardy. Please watch for the fall planting announcementin next month’s Chai Lites and at the Temple website.Interested participants can speak to David Galler [email protected].

In response to a recent Energy Audit by FP&L and the “Mark and Greta Walker Foundation”, the Environmental Action Committee of Temple Israel has received a matching funds grant of $1000 to:

1)Replace and upgrade low efficiencylight bulbs and fixtures

2)Install motion sensitive light switches

3)Install a plastic strip barrier inside the door of our

institutional refrigerator

4)Convert to low flow toilets

Our cost to make these changes is estimated at $3,960.00

These improvements will result in significant resource savings and monetary savings that will be recovered in less than 2 years. Please consider joining the following individuals as we continue the “Greening of Temple Israel”. Funds of $48 and above will be

matched dollar-for-dollar up to a total of $1,000.

Leading up to the fall High Holy Days, during the Hebrew

month of Elul, Jews worldwide prepare for the Yamim

Noraim, the Days of Awe, a ten-day period of prayer,

self-examination, fasting and repentance. Starting with

the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, and culminating

with the Day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, it is a time for

significant personal growth and spiritual transformation.

Facilitated by Rabbis Heyn and Chefitz, our two

workshops will explore the history, rituals, texts,

teachings, liturgies and melodies of the High Holy Days.

Together, we will discuss the intersection between

personal spiritual practice and communal holiday

observance and how they can—and do—enhance each

other. Free of charge, the workshops take place on

Wednesdays, September 5 and 12, 7:00-9:00 p.m.

SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE

.....................................................................................

I look forward to presenting these Moshe-talks on Sundaymornings this fall, after the Holydays. Those who have learned with me over the years will have heard much of what will be presented, but not all, because I haven’t heard all of it myself, yet.

Cantors and Cantorial Soloists ready to inspire us in a rapidly developing neighborhood. But what really is unique to Temple Israel is the community we have built. Now our community is surrounded by all of what is so exciting about Miami. Asour relationships grow within our walls we will also growrelationships with those outside our walls and bring them closer. I feel that so strongly. I see an opportunity to usher in a new era at Temple Israel which will be remarkable. And itwill take all of us to contribute in some way.

Recently, when I returned from Israel, Mr. Jacob Solomon, the CEO of the Jewish Federation, responded to a letter I had sent him. Something he wrote just stays with me all the time: “No community is whole without the participation of every single member, regardless of their particular characteristics”. So, when people have said to me, already, and I am writing this on my 4th day as President, we need to emphasize young families; we need to emphasize empty nesters; we need to emphasize Jews by Choice; and on and on, I go back to that quote and say that our community needs everyone so that we are whole. That, in my opinion, is what makes our home so unique. We are all valued for whatever we bring to our table. And we enjoy each other’s company (for the most part).

I am a person of deep faith and I welcome you to participate fully in growing Temple Israel to its new level. Please feel free to communicate with me at any time. I welcome your input and I look forward to this great challenge. I thank you for your support from the bottom of my heart.

B’Shalom,

Joan L. SchaefferPresident

EXECUTIVE DIRECTORMarla’s Meisele Maysele…(my little story)

had strengths and areas in which he needed our help. Where our community may have failed him was in thinking that as the rabbi, he had super powers, which would enable him to solve all of our difficulties, without our participation and our support.

This summer I am celebrating my chai (18) anniversary in Jewish communal service. And my call to action as I begin my third year as Temple Israel of Greater Miami’s ExecutiveDirector, along with my dedicated staff, is to welcome and acclimate Rabbi Tom and Ale Heyn into the Temple Israel family and community, a seemingly far easier task than my first experience in Savannah, GA. As our spiritual leader,Rabbi Heyn will help us to navigate a path towards ourvision of a new paradigm while respecting the tradition of our ninety year history. This is our future path and as we doduring Kiddush each Friday night, we must embrace Rabbi Heyn, each other and this opportunity. As always, if you want to know how you can get involved…my door is open.

And Rabbi and Ale, since my musical taste leans towards New Age and Brazilian music… you never know I may have some music among my collection to share with you.

Bem-vindo ao Temple Israel!

Diaspora. Imagine the Ladino songs of Spain mingled with Flamenco; pop songs of the 1920s; from Klezmer for kids to Klezmerjamming with Latin beats; previously hidden classical gems unearthed and the influence of Jewish biblical history on Spirituals

of the south – this is Tropical Jewish Sound.

Featured artists are Shir Ami Ensemble, Second Avenue Jewish Chorale, Lloyd Reshard, Klezmer Company Orchestra, Susana Behar & Jose Luis Rodriguez with Niurca Marquez and Alejandra Czarny. The Festival kicks off Saturday night, September 1 with the premiere

of Of Essence & Time/De La Esencia & El Tiempo a collaboration of Sephardic singer Susana Behar, Flamenco guitarist Jose Luis Rodriguez and Nu Flamenco dancer Niurca Marquez. The piece explores the mutual Andalusian roots of Sephardic tradition and

Flamenco music and how each has influenced the other in origins as well as in the artists’ collaborative fusions.

On Sunday, the Klezmer For Kids component of the festival offers families a rich dip into Yiddish culture through the multidisciplinary presentation of the children’s book, Mendel’s Accordion is performed by accordionist Aaron Kula and the Klezmer Company

Orchestra. The performance also includes projections of the picture book and award-winning performer Deborah Sherman as reader.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON IS THEN FILLED WITH A LINE-UP OF ACTS THAT TOUCH ON A VARIETY OF CONNECTIONS TO JEWISH EXPERIENCE:

•2pm - Aaron Kula, accordion and the Klezmer Company Orchestra presents the Latin Klezmer that is uniquely Miami. •2:30pm - classical singer and Director of Arts at St. John’s Lloyd Reshard sings

the connections between African American spirituals and Jewish history.•3pm - Next@19th’s own 2nd Avenue Jewish Chorale recaps its celebrated 1920s Jazz program
