Chains Sling and Things
What holding you up

Every Project must have an overall lifting plan that details the projects’ management processes for the management and co-ordination of lifting activities including:
– Specified Team responsibilities– Who will provide and maintain lifting equipment and
gear– By whom and how lifting plans will be prepared– How will lifting plans be checked and agreed– How will co-ordination of lifting activities take place
Lifting - Planning

Necessary assumptions
Webbing slings are to be no older than 6 months from date of 1st Use
Webbing slings are NOT to be re-tested. After 6 months from date of 1st Use, or if damaged, contaminated etc, they are to be destroyed
All operatives are required to have evidence that they are trained or accredited to be fit for the work they are employed to carry out

General…
All lifting accessories are to be uniquely identifiable Identification number & date tag on webbing sling

Chain lengths are only to be reduced by the use of properly constructed shorteners or clutches

• When using individual slings in a multi-leg lift, always remember the loading factors; -
• For example; - when using 2 fabric slings on a multi-leg lift, factor in 1.4 x the weight of the load. This is the same as single leg chains when working out the SWL
• Single leg is load tested vertically, when multiples used, angle imposes additional load into the lifting gear
Loading factors…REMEMBER
Leg Loadings
Weight exerted on any leg of a sling or chain will increase the greater the angle
Angle between 2 chains or webbing slings must NEVER exceed 90°

4 legged slings
Loose Bars / Tubes / etc
Method:
Two leg webbing slings
Double wrap to avoid slippage
Precautions:
Where choked, the SWL is reduced (20% or more – Check with your Crane Supervisor)
Position of slings to be determined to limit sag in centre of bundle or at either end
Consider requirement for Tag lines to land loadP bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada
Scaffold tubes

Pre-fabricated Reinforcement
General notes:
Fabricated items should be designed and constructed to allow crane lifting and have such lifting points identified
Each cage to have been inspected prior to lifting and approved for lift
Slinging points to be a minimum of 3 links down from the top
On initial lift, check balance point is correct and that deflection is acceptable
Stop and consult Appointed Person if excess deflection.

Tableforms
Method: Tables are to be lifted at the designed lifting points only Properly designed, tested lifting equipment to be used Method statement/risk assessment to be rigidly adhered
to when lifting these shutters
Precautions: Exclusion zones to be established below all areas where
these shutters are being removed from the building Additional training may be required for slinger/signallers

Method: Typical load, rigid sheets such as Plywood, scaffold boards
Double wrapped with webbing slings or chains unless banded
Precautions: Webbing slings to be less than 6 months from 1st issue
Webbing slings must be protected from sharp edges, not be worn, have cuts or any damage
The load must be level for uniform loading
Sleeves or secure packing should be used at corners to avoid damaging materials or slings.

Loose timber
Timber to be double wrapped
Slings or chains may be used
Beware of damage to timber if using chains
Bulky loads may require a combination of slings & chainsP bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada
Stillage Bins
P bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada
Open Stillages
Method:
Where possible, lift load and stillage separately
Where lifting together, two leg chains or slings double wrapped around both load & stillage
Precautions:
Ensure bite to avoid risk of tube slippage
Avoid risk of compression to structure of stillage
Essential that load is levelP bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada
Brick forks & net

Rubbish Skips with lifting cradle
P bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada
Steelwork positive lifting
P bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada
Gas bottles
Bottles to be lifted in a specifically designed & fabricated lifting cage, tested etc as other lifting accessories
Any shackle used to connect to hook etc is subject to a separate test inspection
BOTTLES ARE NOT TO BE LIFTED HORIZONTALLY, OR IN BOAT-SKIPS OR IN ANY GENERAL BUILDERS SKIPS
Gas bottles
Bottles are to be physically secured into lifting cradle
Acceptable?
P bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada
Specialised lifts – Glass stillage
Stillages should be used when lifting glass
Glass to be secured to the stillage
Stillage should be thoroughly examined & tested
P bar Y Safety Consultants Alberta Canada
Specialised lifts – vacuum lifters
A secondary mechanical device must be used when using vacuum lifters
These may need removal for FINAL locating
