Chairman's message

Dear G.O.D.S', Parents and all Supporters,

After long waiting, our new centre “ G.O.D.S' Abode” should be ready by January 2016.

At this emotion charged moment, I can only recall the famous words of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of Independent India, on the midnight of 14/15 of August 1947 :

“Long years ago, we made a tryst with Destiny….”

The story of MBA Foundation was also on similar lines:-

“Long years ago, in the year 2000, we with some Parents of G.O.D.S' and Supporters, made a tryst with Destiny for Persons with Disabilities with a mission that read:-

“A Life with Dignity and Self Esteem for the Disabled.”

We dreamt for them to work with an integrated plan of action on various fronts, right from early childhood intervention to employment to residential life care centre and now, after 13 years and 5 satellite centres, we have come to a moment when we are going to have this dream fulfilled to a substantial extent with our own building G.O.D.S' Abode”, in Airoli, Navi Mumbai, fully disabled friendly, catering to all aspects of rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities.

This journey of 13 years of working closely with Persons with Disabilities and their parents, have given me, other Trustees, special educators, therapists, care givers, administrative staff, volunteers and our supporters, a sense of excitement, joy, happiness & fulfillment and the realisation that so much more needs to be done in this field, to meet the huge demand.

When we started our journey, we thought we were doing a great social service; but today, looking back over the last 13 years, we realise that these differently able youngsters give us much more happiness and joy!! When we don't go even one day to the centre, we miss their smiling faces and the positive vibrations it creates; more so because, in spite of all their physical and other discomforts, they look forward to greeting us all with their smiles!! God bless the G.O.D.S' and their Supporters,

Yours in the service of G.O.D.S',

C R Balasubramanian. Chairman

ANNUAL REPORT 2014-15

MBA Foundation is in the field of integrated rehabilitation of persons with disabilities since January, 2002, with its firm fundamentals of :

Mission : A Life with Self Esteem & Dignity For The Disabled;

Vision : Every Disabled Person to have Convenient Access to All the required Facilities For Rehabilitation.

Strategic Objectives : Unique Concept of Community based Care Centres, in Family Atmosphere, With Plenty of Activities.

Brief Introduction:

Coming out of these fundamentals, MBA Foundation has been progressively working to help improving the lives of people of all ages, with different disabilities, across religions and financial status of people. It offers suitable training services to small children, adolescents and adults along with the required therapy and counseling sessions to encourage and motivate them and their parents towards regular rehabilitation for a better future. It also offers residential care to those adults who need the services for want of the same in their homes.

The uniqueness of the services arises from our firm belief that every human being, able or differently able, has a unique strength, which can be, nourished and put to use for his / her own growth in the community.

Main focus of MBA Foundation has been fruitful occupation for adults with disabilities (Self Sustenance) with proper training in vocational skills, team work, work ethics & discipline, communication skills, etc. To reduce their dependence on others gradually, they get support through relevant therapies & training in activities of daily living and adaptations to help them in mobility, working etc.

While educated youngsters are trained and placed in corporate offices, colleges, schools, cafes, hotels, etc.,, those who cannot do so are trained in making & packing of many daily useable items and they work in the sheltered workshops to earn a living. This focus on earning a meaningful living has brought in tremendous self confidence in these people.

Through the years, we have added facilities for younger children (2 to 17 years) with Early Intervention and Prevocational activities in those locations where such facilities do not exist (eg. Powai, Gorai & Ambernath). We also help completing SSC and HSC through NIOS, for those trainees who are educable, but have dropped out of school for various reasons; they stand a good chance to study further or get into mainstream jobs once they complete Secondary or Higher Secondary levels and computer training. Motivator counseling along with patience in training gives them the much needed self worthiness – I TOO CAN !!

Highlights of the activities in the year 2014-15

The year 2014…2015 saw many new initiatives:th Starting a new centre in Ambernath in October, 2014 – GODS' Hope - the 5 satellite Day care

rehab centre for GODS; an expansion of our activities, to Reach Out to more Persons with Disabilities, with assessment, counseling & therapy for all age groups; and early intervention for children and skills training and functional education for adults.

Extending our RCI Trainers Training Program to other institutions, conducting the course for our own new parents & volunteers and introducing new vocational skills, better communication, music, dance & skit performances on stage, Ramp walk, etc. for our youngsters.

Our Major Project – G.O.D.S' Abode in Airoli, 8000 + sq. ft. working area to house a new integrated rehabilitation centre--

Starting construction in February, 2014, the building is expected to be ready by October 2015 and start functioning by January, 2016. Union Bank of India Social Foundation has agreed

thto Sponsor the entire 4 floor, which will house all the training and therapy programs. Other major sponsors have been Mumbadevi Temple Trust & Mrs. Choudhury (half floor each-

rd nd3 & 2 floor respectively) . Few corporate groups like ESSAR, GODREJ, Bank of India have also donated through our fund raising programs. General donations have come from Social Organisations like Rotary, Giants, well wishers, parents and trustees. These have ensured the timely completion of the construction activity as scheduled.

Nearly Rupees 2 Crores more will be required to complete the project with all interior fittings, fixtures & furnishings and equipment for training, therapy, etc..

This project aims to be of international standard and offer all the rehabilitation services under one roof, including residential care for adults. It also has plans to reach out to rural parents in those areas where such facilities are absent. Training the parents, volunteers and local teachers to replicate these facilities in their locations will help many more such deserving beneficiaries and their parents to move ahead towards fruitful occuapation.

Mr M V Subramanian, retired as President in Axis Bank, took the position of CEO & Executive Trustee of MBA Foundation. With enhanced experience in the corporate working and in the NGO field as the CEO of Axis Bank Foundation, he will bring in better management practices and help the staff members for better achievements in their fields. He has been associated with MBA Foundation for the last 6 years and hence knows its objectives to be able to forge ahead. We, the founder trustees, wish him all the very best in his endevour to work on the lines of the fundamentals and will support him.

Gorai centre, GODS Sagaarika, completed 5 years in September, 2014. The staff there enthusiastically organized a program, inviting many local people and our trainees entertained them. A singer Monybhai Chheda was brought in by Mr. Venkat, who enthralled the audience, especially our GODS members, to dance and enjoy. Entire family of Mr. Amit Dolakia, who has given his bungalows to run the centre, joined in the celebrations.

Regular Rehabilitation Activities at the 5 centres: (Powai, Chembur, Thane, Gorai & Ambernath)

Early Intervention (for children up to the age of 10 years) ( in Powai & Ambernath)

Intervention with therapy and special education in this young age brings in improvement very fast and is visible, giving a lot of motivation to the young parents, who are otherwise afraid, confused and lost. Counseling forms a very important part for them, to keep them motivated to work with the child despite their other priorities.

With the help of Occupational & Speech Therapists and Special Educators assessment is done for each child and the Individual Action Plan is designed for counseling, training, therapy, etc. as per the results of the assessment.

Starting with training in activities of daily living, (ADL- toileting, drinking, eating, washing hands, brushing teeth, etc..) for the children; their parents are shown how to help them at home to become independent in these activities. Improving eye hand coordination, attention span, and pre learning skills is focused on, with occupational therapy, games, etc.. Further, academic syllabus is introduced as per their intellectual capabilities and developmental age.

Some of the children, who are ready for integration into regular school are referred to and monitored; others, who will benefit through special schools are referred there, and those who cannot fit into any of the above are moved to our prevocational training program, once they are above the age of 10.

This year, the total children availing this facility are 21. This program is partly supported by Rotary club of Powai Lakers since the last 3 years in Powai and Surekha Memorial Trust in Ambernath and they have agreed to continue their support for the next year - 2015..16.

Ghatkopar Ladies club has also been supporting this unit by sponsoring a few under privileged children for the last 4 years.

A Case Study : Shravan Kumar a Eight years boy in early intervention is diagnosed with Autism, Attention Deficiency Hyperactive Disorder. When he joined he was curious in learning activities. Due to occupational therapy his hyper activeness has reduced. He shows interest in learning functional academics. He has shown some improvement in his sitting ability as when he came he use to sit in one place.

Pre Vocational Training (for adolescent children - 11 to 17 years)(in Powai, Gorai and Ambernath)Children in this age group, who cannot go into regular or special schools, need more attention and hence cannot be ignored by keeping at home. This is the time when they are growing into adulthood with many questions and confusions and do not know whom to ask.. the parents also are anxious and unaware of how to tackle them and their moodswings, etc. Both, parents and their wards, need proper counseling and special care to deal with every moment, so that the wards grow up into confident youngsters to face the world. They are admitted after due assessment to identify their rehabilitation & educational needs.

Since they don't have any peer groups, they depend only on parents and teachers for all their queries, which need to be addressed with a lot of patience and skill. Since special educators are equipped to handle such children, it is very important that these children attend either a school or a prevocational set up.

In addition to behavior modification and ADL training, they are also trained in managing their physical requirements & communication with others.

While these are living skills, other educational requirements like, Functional academics (as per their need – clock & calendar reading, money concepts, shopping, banking, using public transport, etc.); preparatory training for skills development, are also included in their individual action plans. Some of the acivities are taught in a group level but others are on individual level. Therapy is continued for these children also to keep them alert, focused and flexible physically. A few of them need speech therapy too.

The greatest advantage for parents is, all these facilities are provided under one roof only and so they don't have to move from one location to another.

A Case Study : 2 brothers with hearing & speech impairment live in Gorai village. They came to us 5 years back and with support in speech therapy and education, they got admission in the local school. Now, they attend our centre to get special coaching in life skills and their school studies.

candles, fancy paper bags, gift envelopes, squashes, etc. and Xeroxing, laminating, telephone operating, etc.

Vocational Training : (18 years onwards ..)

(in All Centres – Chembur, Powai, Thane, Gorai & Ambernath)

Every year, there are new students who get admitted, a few of them also move from our pre vocational group when they are ready for this training.

This year, there were 17 new admissions for training in specific vocational skills towards value adding occupation. They were people with mild / moderate mental challenge, cerebral palsy, physically challenged, hearing & speech impaired, downs syndrome and schizophrenic and multiple disabled. A few who joined around the end of last financial year continued with vocational training with these youngsters..

They are first assessed by a team of a social worker, special educator, an occupational/ physiotherapist and psychotherapist. The speech therapist is roped in when needed. Then, an observation period of 1 to 3 months is prescribed, during which time, the trainee comes for 2 to 4 hours, to get acquainted with the other trainees and the atmosphere, sphere of activities, etc. The teachers take this opportunity to observe the interests, strengths and capabilities of these youngsters to make their training plans.

On successful completion of this observation period, full time training starts, which includes group and individual sessions, therapy sessions, relaxation activities and skill training and its prerequisites. If a trainee is found to be requiring prevocational training, even if the age is above 18 years, the person will be moved there till such time he / she has learnt the skills and is ready for vocational training. A Case Study : Anirudh joined us 2 years back; with mild mental retardation, he was hardly communicative though he had good speech. Being in prevocational group for one year and in the vocational group this year, he has gained self confidence and his communication has improved very well; he responds relevenly when asked any question and has started interacting among his peer group. He sings National Anthem well at the end of the day and has encouraged his friend Noel too, who has very less speech, to sing with him !! Noel sings with Anirudh, and they encourage each other ! It is very motivating for the teachers too who have worked dedicatedly.

Sheltered workshop: ( 20 years & above)

After the much needed vocational skills training (6 months or more), every trainee is given the opportunity to work in groups in making and packing of the items in which one has been trained. These trainees work from 10 am to 4 pm daily and earn a stipend. They continue to get the other facilities like counseling, therapy, yoga, relaxation activities, etc.. as per their needs. They are also taught new skills as and when such new skills are itdentified and taken for training. They participate in all the entertainment and celebration activities of the foundation, thus forming a strong part of the activities team.

50% of our trained youngsters can independently do many of the activities like making

Life Care Services: (for youngsters above the age of 20 years)

Started in Powai in the year 2003, with 3 physically challenged girls, now we have 12 girls living in Powai centre, GODS' Heavens; 17 boys are accommodated in Gorai centre, where facilities for their mobility and other care services are created. They live together as one family with full time living in staff to take care of their hygiene, medical needs, food, clothing, sleeping, etc. Day care teachers and physiotherapist come in to train them in various activities and keep them busy with occupation and therapy. All religious functions and festivals, birthday of each beneficiary and the national days are celebrated by all the beneficiairies with the staff members. Parents/guardians come in to meet their wards and take them home during summer & Diwali for 2 weeks. A few of them who do not have a family remain in the centre only.

Memorable happenings down the years with our trainees –

Powai- Fancy Paper bag, Newspaper bag, Gift envelopes, Art & Craft (Duplex Flower, Decorations, Free hand paintings, etc..), Food items (Snacks, pickles & Squash, Dry Snacks, Chocolate & Bakery items), Stitched Items (Table Napkin, Apron, Pouches, etc.), Eco- Friendly Ganpati. Few of the trainees pack Agarbathis, Disinfectant & Hand wash.

Relaxation activities, such as Yoga, Bhajan, Physical exercise, Practice of Dance & Songs for Stage Events, etc. A Personality Enhancement program was conducted for a few trainees to improve them in personal grooming, communication, working in groups, work discipline, helping others in the group, etc..

Sakina Musani, with cerebral palsy, living in our life care unit in Powai, who is from Ahmedabad, says. “I will not be handicapped by my condition; I am physically challenged but differently able” she firmly resolved and developed the love for painting with her foot. Renuka Advani, a severly challenged founder member, is the inspiration for her lonely mother to live. She enjoys being with her peer group in activities and simply answers certain questions which we didnt imagine she would know - like the teacher asking the group a question, “ Raju went to a shop and bought material for Rs 35 and gave the shopkeeper Rs 50; how much will the shopkeeper return.” To this Renuka replied “ Pandhra rupaiya “ ( Rs. 15)!! The teacher was stunned and everyone was thrilled and gave her a big round of applause..

Ashwini,in Thane centre, is wheel chair bound with minimum mobility, gifted with a winning smile and twinkling eyes with a hundred messages. Her joy knew no bounds when she was trained to eat her lunch on her own with a special spoon! It meant independence in deciding what, how much and when to eat !! She is fond of doing diya painting, pasting paper bags and such gross work which she can do with support.

Bhargav, with mild retardation, in Powai centre, surprised everyone on Mothers Day, when he spoke estempore about his mother and how she had helped him in life and how he would like to support her and make her happy !!

So many such suttle experiences with these youngsters, (who are stamped as disabled and cant do much) who have so much to show case, gives us the energy and motivation to keep working with them to make them better citizens of this country !!!

Activities at the different centres.

Parents are roped in to find out if their wards do help them at home or else they are counseled and trained in those activities too.

Achievement/Trained: Sharda and Chanda, who started as our trainees and residential beneficiaries are now working in our organisation as executives in charge of administration and selling respectively, after the necessary training and education. Manisha, after due training in Executive Development and Training program, was placed in a multinational company; while she lived in our Powai centre, she worked with this company for 7 years. Now she has been benched as part of their policy and she is looking for a new job. She too lives in our Powai centre. Komal, whose parents complained about her lethargy and anger at home is living in the residential facility and takes part very actively in all activities; she goes home during weekends to be with her family members, who look forward to her home coming.

There are many more stories of Sakina, Uma, Krishna and others who were depressed, harassed and did not know how to manage themselves but are today happy to be occupied meaningfully and earning a life with dignity and self esteem.

He is very happy, energetic and regular to the centre.

Aman, joined us 3 years back with no communication skills and was very adamant; with team work and patient handling by teachers during training and motivation, now she works with her peers as she needs hand holding in completing any job; but she likes to take care of Renuka, who is in wheel chair and takes her around very safely. Her communication has also improved along with self confidence, though she refuses to help her mother at home. This year, we plan to motivate her to do that at home; cooperation of the family is also needed to accomplish success. Shanky has shown good improvement in all the activities. But due to his restlessness, he walks around talking, which disturbs others. Yoga, P.T. exercises, cycling etc. are being tried to help him improve his attention and behavior, so that he efficiency in working can increase.

Shreekant Yadav is Mental Challenged . When he started coming to the center he used to sit quite and he just kept observing others. He was very Shy lacks confidence but he followed our instructions.

With the training and motivation given by us he has shown good improvement. Now he has shown interest in learning new activities like pasting for Gift Envelopes, News paper bags, Pot painting, etc..

He was not ready to participate in extra curricular activities like dancing, drama etc. But with our training he slowly showed interest in doing it. Now his communication has also improved and he likes to talk with his peers. He likes to play carom, goes to the garden, listens to music etc.

He also does small household shopping like buying vegetables . He likes to watch T.V. Programmes and play computer games. He knows typing but his typing speed is very slow. As keeping him occupied and it will help to raise his self confidence.

Narayan, with multiple disabilities and schizophrenia, had many physical and mental difficulties and hallucinations, when he joined us. With a change in meidcines and regular counselling sessions with love and care, he has won over his sufferings and participates in computer operations, telephone operation and making of bags, envelopes, etc.

Santosh, mentally challenged with speech impairment, was very hyper and aggressive. Therapy – Counseling General counseling & motivation are part of the curriculum to build their self-confidence, attention span, etc; trainees who require individual sessions for behavior modification, motivation, etc. are taken by Psycho-therapist on one to one basis. All the trainees attend group therapy once a week to improve tolerance, team work, etc., and those with physical disabilities or spasticity, get regular physiotherapy. Others are guided in regular physical exercises and Yoga.

Parents requiring counseling to improve relationships with their wards are called whenever required. Regular meetings with parents for review of their wards also helps to discuss any difficulties they face and counsel them how they can manage the same.
