CONNECTIONA publication of First Christian Church of Edmond, OK

    Vol. 2 No. 39 September 30, 2010

    I usedto live inGeorgia,

    wherecookingbarbeque

was away of lifefor somefolks. A

friend of mine used to cook his bar-beque masterpieces all day long onSaturday. It was not a microwaveddish, but a slow and deliberate,all-day affair under just the right

amount of heat. It was a true artform that had evolved over manyattempts to get it just right. Andthe results were well-worth waitingfor. It was the most tender and deli-

cious food I had ever tasted. But ittook time.

Thats the way it is with our

faith. It takes time. We dont havea microwave version of faith thatwe can pull out when we need it.Faith is a relationship with Godthat is developed over years ofprayer, devotion, study and re-lationship with others. Jesus saidit best when he summed up thefaithLove the Lord your God

with all your heart, all your soul, allyour mind and your neighbor asyourself.

Other things in life are like thatas well. You dont learn to play thepiano overnight. Or learn a foreignlanguage. Or take up calculus. Ittakes time.

And a faith that can withstandall the trials of life is a wonderful asset. It gives us peace in the midst ostorms. It gives us strength we nevethought we could have. Courage inthe face of injustice. It gives us lovethat can overcome hatred. And wecan have compassion to reach outall who are hungry, both spirituallyand physically, just as Jesus did.

As we come to the final week oour Annual Campaign, I invite youto practice your faith by turning yoattention to giving. Practicing goodstewardship opens our hearts to th

possibilities of God and makes usthe loving and generous people Gocreated us to be.
