    PROJECT BRIEF

  • 10 11

The central focus of the project is a Showroom that will showcase a variety of artworks and design objects and host different type of activities. It is important that this space preserves connection with the rest of the exhibition spaces so they can function as a whole when necessary.

1+1 Showroom must have capacity to showcase objects of different kind and scale. Small objects like jewellery should be treated with the same importance as bigger ones. There should be distinct showcasing zones for different types of objects, but it is not necessary if justified. Objects include:

Artworks (sculpture & paintings)Applied art objectsJewellery Furniture (variety of sizes and types)Books

This space will host diverse activities and should possess a certain level of transformability according to different situations. It is important that spatial transformations can be rearranged with simple manip-ulation.

1+1 Showroom will host listed events, and often a combination of them:

    LecturesWorkshopsProjections ExhibitionsPrivate showcasing

A temporary Lounge will be installed in the lobby of 1+1 Freeport Art Centre when needed, depending on the main events happening inside the centre. Usually the lobby is used only for opening and closing events of main exhibitions, so everything that is happening there has a temporary character.

The purpose of temporary Lounge is to extend a Showroom into more comfortable space with day-light, where clients can relax and discuss about an object of interest with 1+1 sales stuff. Together with the VIP room which is located between the lobby and the Showroom, it is forming a quiet zone for more private discussions and meetings, where, depending on occasion, cocktail or catering can be served.

This zone is also supposed to showcase some of the most interesting objects from Showroom, enriching the ambient with their beauty and introducing the whole collection to clients. It should function as an attractive unique introduction of the Showroom, also as an extension that shares the same identity as the Showroom.

All interventions should be temporary and easy to transform/move. Design objectives are:- Comfortable seating for relaxation and discussion of small groups and individuals- Showcasing of selected objects- Dedicated place for catering/cocktail - Visual connection to Showroom (signage, print, detailing,..)- Security door cover

With this intervention 1+1 Freeport Art Centre aims to insert a fresh identity into its Dongsishitiao space and to promote its status of a first Art & Luxury Freeport in downtown Beijing. This gate should be a symbol of a free cross-cultural exchange and every-thing 1+1 represents with its China + West approach.

Entrance provides first and most important impres-sion to guests, so it should introduce a new identity that this project is bringing. It should also be able to reflect the program of 1+1 Freeport Art Centre, featuring exhibitions and events.

This Gate should be, in a way, a window to the world of 1+1 Freeport Art Centre.

    Design requirements:

Two separate entrances Ability to bring in large scale objects (eg. cars,..)Place for a sculpture / installationProgram/Promo surface..

    #3 ENTRANCE

The existing VIP rooms current interior arrangement should not be changed, but its glass windows could be considered as part of the lounge, transformable with-out breaking the unity of the space. VIP room already has ajustable roller shutters for gaining a certain level of privacy.

The storage room is a narrow space with its door opening next to the entrance of the showroom. The design must consider its capacity as this space will be used as storage for all new temporary elements included in design.

    Spacial Organization& Circulation

    Flexibility& Storage

    Cultural References

    Atmosphere& Materials

It is important that 1+1 Showroom and events that are the part of the main program of 1+1 Freeport Art Centre can cohabitate in a same space and still keep distinct identities and integrity. In some occasions, all exhibition space of the center will be used for main exhibitions, which should not prevent Showroom from functioning.

Another issue is the relationship between the Salon and the Showroom. As the showroom is deep inside the center, it must have clear circulation and visual connection to the entrance zone so that guests can orient with ease.

The design should consider cultural references to create a fusion between the West and the East and harmonically bring mixed elements to the space. The interpretation of these references should be contem-porary, and it can reflected on the spacial arrange-ment, furniture design or the materials used.

As the whole project is in a way considered to be of a temporary character, this should be a starting point for any design. All designed elements must have possi-bility to move around a space and to be able to fit the storage capacities.

Inside the showroom space there is a technical wall which is rarely used for exhibitions as it is full of opening (doors, fire equipment,..). It is suggested that main design focus is on this wall as it is a dead surface that could be used in many ways. If designers decide to cover the wall, it is important that doors and opening are left accessible if necessary.

All designed elements must be able to fit dedicated storage space capacity. It is not necessary but an advantage, that the show-casing elements have their own storage capacities, especially for jewelry and smaller objects.

Considering the fact that Showroom is located deeply inside the center, it is very important to pay close attentions to lighting and atmospheric effects in this space. As there is no daylight and no windows, it is desirable that newly designed space has a comfortable atmosphere that will make visitors spend more time there while feeling cozy. Any kind of floor/wall/ceiling treatment is welcome, if it serves the purpose.

1+1 Showroom is a very profiled kind of store that will showcase only exclusive items mostly targeting high-end clients. Its permanent exhibitions will consist of carefully selected unique, collectible and expensive objects gathered around the world.

Selection of materials used in the design proposal and surface finishing must correspond to the value and rarity of the exhibiting collection. Overall look needs to carry a feeling of exclusiveness and emphasise the artistic value of showcasing objects, but also keep the atmosphere relaxed and warm.
