Chamber Matters, September 2015

Name: Connie Chuong Company: Silk Nails Birth Place: Vietnam

When did you come to the US: My family relocated to the United States shortly after the Vietnam War. Why did you come to the US: My father fought alongside the American military during the Vietnam War. When we lost, we were persecuted by the North Vietnamese communist forces and had to flee the country as refugees.

Educational Background: Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Management

Describe the culture of your home: I grew up in a small farming community in a southern part of Vietnam. Everyone knew everyone and it was like a family. We took care of each other. Everyone was involved; everyone came together to build roads, bridges, and schools. It was a community.

How many languages do you speak: I speak Vietnamese and English.

Why did you move to Douglas County: I like the pace of life here. I like the sense of community. It reminds me of home.

What is the biggest difference between doing business in the US and in your home: Unfortunately, I don’t know. I came over here as a child and don’t know what it’s like to run a business in Vietnam.

What one thing would you share with our members to debunk a myth about your culture: Sometimes people think all Vietnamese people are communists, but that’s not true. In fact, Vietnamese people who came to the United States after the war in the mid-70s fled as refugees from the Vietnamese communist regime. The Vietnam War was a civil war between Vietnamese people in the South-- like my father who wanted a free, democratic country-- and the Vietnamese communist forces in the North. My father spent years in hard labor camps after the war for his service. My family was able to come to the United States because of my father’s service. I have always been grateful to my father and the United States government for this.

“I am the DC Chamber” Enjoy this month’s cultural spotlight on one of our Chamber Members - we are proud of our diverse group of business members and want to let our readers learn more

about what makes our Chamber so successful - YOU! If you are interested in being featured as one of our spotlights, please contact [email protected].

Young Professionals Connection 2015 Awards Continuing Education Scholarship

The Douglas County Chamber’s Young Professionals Connection (YPC) announced the recipients of the annual YPC Con-tinuing Education Scholarship at the GreyStone Power Luncheon on August 18th. The YPC Continuing Education Scholar-ship is designed for young professionals from a Chamber Member business or organization to continue their education on any level; whether pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree, a technical certification, or simply returning to school for a refresher course or class specific to their professional development.

The Young Professionals Connection is a program of the Douglas County Chamber Foundation. YPC combines personal and professional development through social, community service and professional activities, helping members connect with peers, connect with community and connect with a bright future! YPC’s mission is to create an inclusive and collabor-ative network of resources that empowers talented individuals to achieve their goals for professional growth and success; provide employers with an engaged and competitive workforce; and propels Douglasville/Douglas County forward.

Due to the great success of the YPC Cornhole Tournament fundraiser in May, the group was pleased to increase the number of scholarships awarded from one recipient to three. The 2015 Continuing Education Scholars were Nicole Hilton with Cole Hill, LLC, Steven Williams with Stallings Insurance Agency, and Megan Bryant with the Bank of North Georgia.

If you are interested in learning more about YPC and its functions, please contact Sara Ray at 770.942.5022 or visit www.douglascountygeorgia.com.
