Cardiovascular surgery team extends to Dickinson Beginning July 29, Sanford’s cardiovascular sur-gery team, consisting of Cardiovascular Surgeons Timothy Pansegrau, MD, and Sean Russell, MD, as well as Family Nurse Practitioners Fae Glass and Elizabeth Scheurer, will bring specialized care close to home by seeing patients the last Wednesday of each month at Sanford Health Dickinson Clinic. Two cardiovascular surgery team members will travel from Bismarck to Dickinson each month.

The team will see patients with peripheral vascular issues or those needing some form of cardiovascular or lung surgery. They will also assist with AV fistula creation for dialysis, dialysis catheter placements and removal, and pacemaker placements.

A physician referral is not needed to see a cardiovascular surgeon in Dickinson. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call (701) 456-6244.

Sanford Health Dickinson Clinic offers sports physicals

Sanford Health Dickinson Clinic, located at 2615 Fairway St., is now offering sports physicals. Patients can schedule an appointment by calling the clinic at (701) 456-6000. The clinic is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Monday through Friday. To receive a sports physical after hours or on the weekend, please visit Sanford Health Walk-in Clinic, located within Sanford Health Dickinson Clinic, which is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends. The North Dakota High School Activities Association requires annual sports physicals for all athletes participating in school-sanctioned sports. Athletes must have their physicals completed before the first day of practice for their sport.

Student athletes should print and fill out the sports physical history form prior to their appointment. This form can be found at sanfordhealth.org, keywords: Dickinson sports physicals.

JLG Architects named a PSMJ Circle of Excellence Firm

JLG Architects has been named one of PSMJ’s 2015 Circle of Excellence Firms, which represents the top 20% of participants in PSMJ’s annual Performance Benchmark Survey. Of the 66 firms to receive this honor, JLG Architects was the only architecture firm in both North Dakota and South Dakota, and one of three architecture-only firms in Minnesota, to make the list.

Regional Publication Features Heilman as Rising Star

Tim Heilman, Choice Financial’s chief information officer, has been selected by Northwestern Financial Review as a “Rising Star in Banking.”

The publication’s Rising Star nominees are bankers under the age of 45 who have worked in banking for at least 10 years and who have made significant contributions to their bank, industry and community. Anywhere from five to 10 community bankers are selected annually. Tim is featured in the July issue of Northwestern Financial Review publication.

Heilman has been with Choice Financial since 2004. He is a member of the executive management team, risk management team, and leads the company’s development team in pursuing service and solutions that lead to premier experiences for current and future customers. In addition, Heilman serves as vice chair on the Fidelity Information Systems (FIS) Banking Advisory Board.

Heilman is a native of Rugby, N.D., and graduated from the University of Mary, Bismarck, N.D., with bachelor’s degrees in computer information systems and business administration.

CHI St. Joseph’s Health Earns ACR Accreditation

CHI St. Joseph’s Health has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in nuclear medicine, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and computed tomography (CT) as the result of a recent review by the American College of Radiology (ACR).

Nuclear medicine is a branch of medical imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive material, ingested by the pa-tient, to diagnose and treat a variety of disease, including many types of cancers, heart disease, and certain other ab-normalities within the body. MRI is a noninvasive medical test that utilizes magnetic fields to produce anatomical imag-es of internal body parts to help physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. CT scanning — sometimes called CAT scanning — is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and tailor treatments for various medical conditions.

The ACR gold seal of accreditation represents the highest level of image quality and patient safety. It is awarded only to facilities meeting ACR Practice Guidelines and Technical Standards after a peer-review evaluation by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. Image quality, personnel qualifications, adequacy of fa-cility equipment, quality control procedures, and quality assurance programs are assessed. The findings are reported to the ACR Committee on Accreditation, which subsequently provides the practice with a comprehensive report they can use for continuous practice improvement.

The ACR is a national professional organization serving more than 36,000 diagnostic/interventional radiologists, radiation oncologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and medical physicists with programs focusing on the practice of medical imaging and radiation oncology and the delivery of comprehensive health care services.

JLG Architects Welcomes New Hires

JLG is pleased to announce the addition of 10 full time employees to the firm, including Dickinson native, Shawn Senescall.

SHAWN SENESCALL, Project Support: Shawn joins JLG’s Grand Forks office with two years of intern experience at Helenske Design Group. He earned his Master of Architecture Degree at North Dakota State University, where he made the Dean’s list every year and graduated Magna Cum Laude. Shawn was a finalist for the BWBR Prize, as well as the Peter F. McKenzie Memorial Thesis Award for having the top thesis in the class of 2015, and was awarded the EAPC Scholarship, Marvin Windows and Doors Design Competition Award, and the Province Balfour Award which is given to the most outstanding Sigma Chi member in either Minnesota or North Dakota. Shawn served on the Sigma Chi Fraternity executive board every year in various positions, including Undergraduate Representative to the Leadership Training Board, Risk Manager, New Member Educator, Vice President, and President. Additionally, he was elected as president for the Interfraternity Council, was a student chair on the NDSU Greek Life Advisory Board, and a class representative for the NDSU Architecture and Landscape Architecture Alumni Advisory Board. Shawn will work from JLG’s Grand Forks office.

AMBER GRINDELAND, Project Support: Amber has been with JLG since 2014, when she joined the Grand Forks and Fargo offices as a student intern. She earned her Master of Architecture Degree at North Dakota State University, where she was on the Dean’s list throughout college, graduating with a 4.0 grade point average and assisted the City of Fargo with a proposal for the Georgetown University Energy Prize Competition. Amber was a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the American Institute of Architecture Students, and Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society, and currently the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). In 2013 Amber earned her private pilot’s license and in 2014 she spent a semester studying abroad in Belgium. She also received the Eggert, Henry and Em Scholarship, the ND Academic Scholarship and the AIA Henry Adams Medal and Certificate Program recipient for being one of the top 2 students in the class of 2015. Amber will work from JLG’s Grand Forks office.

BRIAN GLUR, Project Support: Brian has been with JLG since 2014, when he joined the Fargo office as an intern. He earned his Master of Architecture Degree at North Dakota State University, where he was on the Dean’s list three semesters consecutively. Brian won the 2015 NDSU Studio Mentor Award, given to one student each year by nomination of their peers for exceptional leadership. Outside of architecture, Brian plays the trumpet in The Ska-Skank Redemption, a popular Fargo-based band who has opened for Reel Big Fish and 311. Brian will work from JLG’s Grand Forks office.

DENNIS BUKOWSKI, Project Support: Dennis spent six years as a farm hand for Bukowski Farms and four consecutive summers as a construction work/carpenter for Sorter Construction prior to joining JLG’s Fargo office as an intern in 2013. He has earned his Master of Architecture Degree at North Dakota State University, where he was part of the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) 2013 Ideal Theatre Student Design Competition and led a team in an AIA community service project called Freedom by Design. Dennis will work from JLG’s Grand Forks office.

JEN UPCRAFT, Project Support: Jen has been with JLG since 2013, when she joined the Grand Forks office as a student intern. She earned her Master of Architecture Degree at North Dakota State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude. During her time at NDSU, Jen was a graduate research assistant and a teaching assistant for the architecture department, as well as a writing tutor for the NDSU Center for Writers. She was a member of Tau Sigma Delta Honor Society, a 2013 BWBR Prize nominee, and a 2014-2015 NDSU Innovation Challenge finalist. She received the AIA Henry Adams Medal for being one of the top 2 students in the class of 2015. Jen will work from JLG’s Grand Forks office.

JOSH DONNELLY, Project Support: Josh earned his Master of Architecture Degree at North Dakota State University. He spent three consecutive summers as an intern with KLJ followed by a summer internship in JLG’s Williston office where he will continue to work full time.

KYLE SWENSON, Systems Administrator/Sharepoint Manager: Kyle joined JLG’s Grand Forks office earlier this year with 6 years of experience in Systems Administration and Information Technology. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of North Dakota in 2007.

SAMUEL ERICKSON, Project Support: Sam earned his Master of Architecture Degree at North Dakota State University, where he made the Dean’s list every semester from 2010 on. While at NDSU, he was a Teacher’s Assistant and Graduate Research Assistant, and was a finalist for the Peter F. McKenzie Memorial Thesis Award for having one of the top thesis in the class of 2015.

SETH MORKEN, Construction Services—Project Support: Seth earned his Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering at North Dakota State University, where he was on the Dean’s list four times. Prior to joining JLG he was a teaching assistant at NDSU and intern at Noridian Mutual Insurance Company and Industrial Builders, Inc. Seth also served on the executive board of the Iota Sigma chapter of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and received the Presidential Honor Scholarship for high academic achievement. Currently he remains on the Board of Directors at Atonement Lutheran Church. Seth will work from JLG’s Fargo office.

TOM SCHULTZ, Construction Services Specialist: Tom joins JLG with over 40 years of construction experience with companies such as APOLLO Construction, a shopping center developer from Barcelona, Spain, JC Penney's and Target Stores, where he was awarded 16 field construction awards. Tom’s work with Target took place in over thirty states and Canada and included developing formats in Super Target conversions, expansions, and remodels and building the flagship store in Toronto, ON. Tom will work from JLG’s Bismarck office.

NIT & DSU Collaborate to Provide Opportunities

Northern Industrial Training (NIT) has partnered with Dickinson State University (DSU) to provide an opportunity for individuals to not only receive a commercial driver’s license, but also receive a Certificate of Completion in Business Fundamentals. NIT is a vocational school that is open to the general public offering several truck driver programs along with a multitude of safety trainings for heavy equipment and oil and gas pipeline programs. Originally based out of Alaska, NIT opened an office in Dickinson, North Dakota in 2012 recognizing the need for a quality trained vocational workforce. Joey Crum, President and CEO of NIT, met with DSU’s President, Dr. Coston in the spring of 2014 to discuss a way to merge their individual platforms for education to benefit both entities. Crum was looking for a way to introduce NIT’s student population to classes that would increase their business knowledge and establish a format that would allow them to learn and work simultaneously.

Both Crum and Coston agree that it is important to provide skilled tradesmen with a formal education that will allow them to eventually grow into a management position or even run their own small business. The certificate provides an opportunity for individuals to set themselves up for success in the event of a situation that would inhibit them from performing traditional field tasks. A curriculum was formalized last fall for the Certificate of Completion in Business Fundamentals, which will be available both in the traditional college classroom setting on the Dickinson campus and also online. The program consists of 15 credit hours and covers topics such as accounting, finance, spreadsheets, and management and leadership. Margaret Sanger Papers Project Join TR Digital Library

The Theodore Roosevelt Center (TR Center) at Dickinson State University is publishing online images from the Margaret Sanger Papers Project, a historical editing project sponsored by the Division of Libraries at New York University. This collection includes magazine and newspaper articles, as well as speeches

given by Sanger. The items illustrate the intense disagreement between Sanger and Theodore Roosevelt, particularly about birth control and reproductive rights. While the TR Center has been creating a digital library of items related to the life and presidency of Theodore Roosevelt since 2008, this is the first time items have been received from another documentary editing project. “The items in this collection are intensely relevant to current discussions in local communities and across national news media,” said TR Center digital library coordinator and archivist Pamela Pierce. “Reading these articles and speeches can inspire additional discussion and understanding of perspectives on reproductive rights.” Visit the Margaret Sanger Papers Project items related to TR at www.theodorerooseveltcenter.org/Research/Collections/ or search other items related to Progressive era issues at www.theodorerooseveltcenter.org.

Strom Center to host Board Governance

Workshop Sept. 29 – 30, 2015

The Strom Center at Dickinson State University (DSU) will host a Board Governance Workshop

featuring Executive Management System’s President and CEO, Melvin Nelson Sept. 29 – 30, 2015. Nelson, a former telecommunications and energy company executive, has four decades of leadership and boardroom experience (both for-profit and non-profit) – including a dozen years as an executive consultant and a decade of experience with Carver Policy Governance®.

Nelson works with owners, boards, CEOs and leadership teams to develop cultures of integrity and trust, his primary focus being CEO development. He has spoken to international audiences on a wide variety of leadership topics and has recently given keynote addresses on the topic of “Integrity-based Success.”

Those who attend will benefit from Nelson’s expertise and experience in governing boards. “Individuals join boards because they desire to serve, and to do good things for their community,” said Ray Ann Kilen, director of the Strom Center at Dickinson State University. “These sessions with Mel will help both seasoned and new board members understand their responsibilities as board members – preparing them to be successful in their role.”

The workshop will use the Carver Policy Governance® model as a framework covering topics such as leadership roles, financial management strategies, implementing policies and performance evaluations. Attendees will receive the Carver Policy Governance® guides and a copy of the book Reinventing Your Board: A Step-By-Step Guide to Implementing Policy Governance.

Baker Boy donates $6,000 to DSU’s Strom Center

Baker Boy, a local manufacturing company, has continued to honor their pledge by donating another $6,000 to the Strom Center at Dickinson State University (DSU).

Baker Boy has been generously donating to the Strom Center for nearly a decade, contributing to a $60,000 pledge made when the center was opened. “Baker Boy is happy to provide funds to support the Strom Center’s mission to nurture and grow entrepreneurs in the region,” said Baker Boy President, Guy Moos. The pledge was made to match a donation from the Center of Excellence – a North Dakota legislatively authorized fund.

This specific donation will provide resources for the Strom Center’s operations – including activities tied to research and the development of new programs.

Professional Development This committee has interviewed and selected a great group of high school seniors to participate in the

2015/2016 Leadership Dickinson Program. They are also working on organizing the first Lunch N learn which will be held in October as well as working with the DSU Trio Program to partner with them in helping prepare

the university students for the workplace after graduation.

Promotions Committee This group continues to promote ‘Shopping Local, Shop Dickinson”. They are busy planning the first Dickin-

son Festival of Trees as well as working on the 25th Annual craft show.

Badlands Storage is a “Class A” self-storage facility that offers

Dickinson, North Dakota and the surrounding area a

premium self-storage experience. Located just off Highway 22 and

29th St. West at a very convenient location, Badlands Storage is truly

an asset for the entire community. Badlands Storage's customers will

enjoy storing their belongings close to home and work, as well as the

peace of mind, security and comfort the facility provides. Badlands is

fenced with an electronic gate system allowing tenant access 5:00 AM

to 10:00 PM, 7 days a week. In addition, Badlands uses state of the art

video surveillance to monitor the facility 24 hours a day.

Other facility features include:

Onsite Rental Office and Store: Provides easy access to the site manager as well as a store front that sells moving and packing supplies.

Climate Controlled Storage: One of three types of storage offered.

No need to worry about inclement weather, freezing temps,

heat or humidity adversely affecting your belongings.

Tenant Insurance: We offer added tenant storage insurance for

the same reasons we carry insurance on everything else in our

lives. The unexpected happens in life and tenant storage

insurance can save the day when the unfortunate happens,

whether from fire, tornado, theft, etc.

Online Customer Portal: Tenants can access their accounts,

online, 24 hours a day to make a payment, schedule their

move-out, or sign up for auto pay.

Online Reservations: Prospective tenants can view live rental

rates and reserve a storage unit online 24 hours a day.

Badlands Storage was a dream that began in early-2013 when the

partners of Five Star Storage (a family-owned company

headquartered in Fargo, North Dakota) decided to broaden their

self-storage business to the western half of North Dakota, and

in particular the community of Dickinson. While the City of

Dickinson had a strong need for additional self-storage within its

community, Five Star Storage saw more than that. Dickinson

residents needed more options for their self-storage, such as a

facility with the features and amenities that Badlands Storage offers.

Five Star Storage, formerly known as Hendricks Property Management, is the operator of Badlands Storage, and has been doing business and managing properties throughout North Dakota since the 1970s. The company’s roots were originally planted in the rural town of Wyndmere in Southeast North Dakota, but it has since expanded to across the state.

Badlands Storage is now the 10th self-storage

facility operated by the Five Star Storage team,

which includes facilities in Dickinson, Fargo, West

Fargo and Grand Forks, North Dakota, as well as the

Twin Cities area in Minnesota. Our mission has al-

ways been to provide a superior self-storage

experience for our communities. Many people don’t

realize the differences in self-storage and that

everybody’s storage needs are different. Storage

facilities need to accommodate that broad range of

needs. This is why Badlands Storage and all other

Five Star Storage properties live by the slogan

“Taking Care of People, Not Just Their Property”.

The Badlands Storage and Five Star team invite the public to

attend our Grand Opening Celebration on Thursday, August

27th, 2015. We will begin with a ribbon cutting ceremony

scheduled for 11:00 AM, to be followed with a tour of the

facility and complimentary lunch and refreshments.
