Dear Colleagues

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you on behalf of the Scientific Committee to the 65th Annual and Scientific Meeting of the Irish Gerontological Society in Wexford.

I have been reflecting recently on how this meeting has grown and developed over the years. However, one thing has remained constant and that is the environment of a stimulating and challenging meeting where we network, talk, laugh and learn. As always, issues pertinent to the lives of older people in our communities will be discussed and debated.

This is also an opportunity to celebrate the significant academic endeavour taking place in Ireland and further afield, on issues relating to older people in health, social policy, and economic arenas. We hope that you find the wide-ranging programme of nearly 300 oral and poster presentations stimulating, and that you have an opportunity to share the knowledge that will contribute to the advancement of social and health policy, as well as improving interaction with our older citizens.

As always we hope that you leave this meeting awash with new ideas, both around how care is provided for older people and also areas for further research and development.

In this our 65th year we have deliberately titled this meeting “Changing Perspectives in Gerontology: the Next 65 Years” because we want you to be challenged about the future, challenged about concepts of care, challenged about medical and therapeutic advances, challenged about the position of older people in our society.

What you learn and experience over these few days may give you new ideas and force some of us to re-evaluate the focus of future health and social care policy. In addition, we hope that you will find ample opportunities for networking and meeting new and familiar colleagues during the coffee and lunch breaks, social activity and while viewing the posters.

We would be very appreciative if you could visit the sponsors’ stands, both as an acknowledgment of industry support, but also because many aspects on display relate to improving life for older people.

This is my final meeting as President, which was preceded by four years as Secretary and a further two on the Executive of the IGS. It has been tremendously rewarding to be part of this wonderful Society over the last 15 years but I am also looking forward to being an ordinary member again! I would like to thank the members of the IGS Executive Committee, the Scientific Committee, the IGS team, Miriam Ahern and Lucette Murray for all their support during my tenure. They, of course along with our industry partners, have made this event happen, for which we are all very grateful.

Mo Flynn President Irish Gerontological Society

FÁILTEWelcome, each and every one of you, to Wexford and to the 65th Irish Gerontological Society Annual and Scientific Meeting. We chose Wexford because, like Killarney, the IGS has never visited this part of the country for our meeting and it gave us an opportunity to engage with colleagues whom we hadn’t worked with before. I would like to thank our event associates: Ireland East Hospital Group, University College Dublin and Waterford IT School of Nursing.

I would like to take the opportunity to welcome Deirdre Lang, Professor Robert Clarke, Professor James Nazroo and Professor Martin Vernon as our keynote speakers. My sincere thanks also to Professor Tom Scharf and Dr. Siobhan Kennelly who will be presenting under the meeting theme of “Changing Perspectives in Gerontology: the Next 65 Years”.

The IGS is delighted to welcome the ISPGM again, as well as hosting the second Nursing, HSCP and Trainee Doctor special interest group meetings. Bringing the respective disciplines together at the end of the day is a positive way to finish it, allowing us to reflect on the day’s events.

Whilst none of us were around at its inception, the IGS celebrates 65 years this year, and has grown considerably since the first meeting which six people attended. I would like to think that Dr. John Fleetwood would be proud at how much the IGS has developed since 1951. Since its establishment, there have been numerous advances in technology, medicine and research and each of us can probably think of a milestone in the older person’s health, care and policy issues that made a difference to their life.

We attend the IGS Meetings because we have a common interest in improving or transforming the care, health, social and policy issues for the older person. Having read through every single abstract (only 297 overall – took me no time!), I am yet again hugely impressed by the depth and breadth of research and initiatives being carried out throughout this country and beyond. Ageing is what we all have in common and if we can all, in some small way, contribute to making a positive difference, the benefits will be seen and reaped by every member of society.

Please do take the opportunity to visit and network with our sponsors who have contributed to making this meeting happen and who have in their own way improved older persons’ care. Take time to network with each other, whether during the breaks or when viewing the posters. There are so many different disciplines attending this conference, many of the presenters have travelled great distances. It is how connections are made and future collaborations are born.

Sincere thanks to the local organising committee, the IGS Executive Committee, the Co-Chairs, the poster adjudicators, the abstract reviewers, the student helpers, Miriam Ahern and Lucette Murray for making this meeting happen.

He qualified in clinical medicine in Ireland and worked for 5

years in internal medicine and 4 years in cardiology. After 2 years in clinical pharmacology at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, USA, he joined CTSU in 1991 and specialised in Cardiovascular Epidemiology.

His main research interests are to understand the importance of classical and novel risk factors for occlusive vascular diseases. He led several large observational studies and meta-analyses of observational studies and randomized trials (eg, Whitehall study, PROCARDIS, CARDIoGRAMplusC4D, B-Vitamin Treatment Trialists’ Collaboration and the BEST-D trial). He also worked extensively on the Prospective Studies Collaboration and the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB) study. He currently leads a research programme to assess the importance of blood pressure, blood lipids, and novel biomarkers (including genetic markers, cytokines, proteomics and metabolomics) for occlusive vascular diseases in the CKB study. His work has been widely cited (200 publications, H-index of 54) and is listed in Tomson Reuters’ Most Influential Scientific Minds 2014.

DEIRDRE LANG RGN, BNS (Hons) Dip Mgt, HDip Gerontological Nursing.Deirdre is Director of Nursing for the National Clinical Programme for Older People (NCPOP), Leadership Development Nursing Profession Older Persons.Deirdre trained in St Vincent’s Hospital as a Registered General Nurse. She spent a number of years working in acute services both in Australia

and in Ireland. She has worked in mental health nursing and also in practice development in the roles of Clinical Placement Co-ordinator and Facilitator for Newly appointed Staff Nurses in AMNCH. In her role as Project Officer with the Nursing Midwifery Planning Development Unit (NMPDU) she managed a Government to Government recruitment initiative across a number of Irish service providers and Spain, which she feels has provided her with a strategic overview of the health services.

Deirdre’s experience in Older Persons Services includes the role of CNM 2, Assistant Director of Nursing and Director of Nursing both in the HSE and private sector. Her passion for Older Person services and nurses working in this specialist area saw her set up a subgroup within the Irish Association of Directors of Nursing & Midwifery (IADNAM). The aim of this group is to provide a forum and network for Directors of Nursing in this sector to support each other in managing unprecedented challenges and change. As a qualified coach she has provided support through her coaching to colleagues both formally and informally. Her role as Director of Nursing of the NCPOP and its joint role of leadership development of older persons nursing bring together all aspects of her experience to date, together with her passion for the older patient and those who provide their care. Her approach to life is Henry Ford’s “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t ………you are right”. She is presently undertaking her Masters in Leadership (RCSI).

JAMES NAZROOJames Nazroo is Professor of Sociology at the University of Manchester, UK, Director of the ESRC Research Centre on Dynamics of Ethnicity and Co-Director of the Manchester Institute for Collaborative research on Ageing. Before coming to Manchester, he was Professor of Medical Sociology in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at UCL. He initially trained at

St. George’s Hospital Medical School, where he obtained a BSc (1983, medical sociology) and MBBS (1986). He then studied at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College for a MSc in Sociology of Health and Illness (1989), and finally studied for a PhD in Sociology at UCL (1999).

Issues of inequality, social justice and underlying processes of stratification have been the primary focus of his research activities, which have centred on gender, ethnicity, ageing, and the interrelationships between these. His research on ageing has been concerned to understand the patterns and determinants of social and health inequalities in ageing populations, with a particular interest on the ‘transmission’ of inequalities across the lifecourse, patterns of ‘retirement’, formal and informal social and civic participation, and how class operates post-retirement. He has conducted studies on quality of life for older people among different ethnic groups in the UK, on inequalities in health at older ages, on routes into retirement and the impact of retirement on health and well-being and on volunteering and social participation in later life. He is Co-PI of the English Longitudinal Study of Aging, which is a multi-disciplinary panel study of those aged 50 and older, and part of an international ‘family’ of very similar studies.

MARTIN VERNONMartin qualified in 1988 in Manchester. Following training in the North West he moved to East London to train in Geriatric Medicine where he also acquired an MA in Medical Ethics and Law from King’s College. He returned to Manchester in 1999 to take up post as Consultant Geriatrician building community geriatrics services in South Manchester.

Martin was Associate Medical Director for NHS Manchester in 2010 and more recently Clinical Champion for frail older people and integrated care In Greater Manchester. He has been the British Geriatrics Society Champion for End of Life Care for 5 years and was a standing member of the NICE Indicators Committee.

In 2015 Martin moved to Central Manchester where he is Consultant Geriatrician and Associate Head of Division for Medicine and Community Services. He also holds Honorary Academic Posts at Manchester and Salford Universities and was appointed as Visiting Professor at the University of Chester in 2016.

In 2016 Martin was appointed National Clinical Director for Older People and Person Centred Integrated Care at NHS England.
