The August Stated Meeting will be on August 18th because of the Ventura County Fair

Masonry at work in our Community On Tuesday May 24th some of the Brothers of Channel Islands Lodge No 214 helped prepare and serve a meal at the Ventura County Rescue Mission The Brothers who attended the event reported that it was hard work but very rewarding

My Brothers We have a significant financial situation on the horizon which we need to address and resolve ASAP Some background In 2015 the lodge decided to fund five scholarships at $100000 each and pro-

vide continued funding at $100000 a year for up to three additional years for recipients We thus committed ourselves to paying out $500000 in scholarships in 2015 $10000 in 2016 $15000 in 2017 and $20000 in 2018 and all subsequent years

In addition our operational expenses have increased while the lodge dues to support those operations have not increased since 2009 when they were set at $59 Any increase in the total annual dues has been caused by increases in the annual mandatory per capita paid to Grand Lodge (GL) For 2016 each member paid $103 total annual dues which consisted of $59 lodge dues and $44 GL per capita The 2017 per capita is set at $4650 Also Over the next couple of years the lodge and Hall Association will experience significant ex-penses in preparing for the 150th Lodge Anniversary which is in five short years Those expenses are yet to be determined For several years Withdrawals from the Lodge Investment Fund or saving account have covered any budget shortfall This was sustainable so long as our investments experienced good annual returns and the Lodge was able to draw 4 of the four year average from our investments as well as bringing in member dues However the Board of Trustees because of recent low returns in the stock market has asked that this year and for the foreseeable future we reduce our demand on the Investment portfolio to 2 of the four year average in order that the investment portfolio can be grown This means that funds drawn from our invest-ments will decline from about $32000 to $16000 Thus when all of this is considered we will not have enough money to pay for the scholarships the Lodge committed to in 2015 and the other operations of the Lodge without some serious fiscal decisions be-ing made As I see it we have three options or some combination thereof First the Lodge can direct the Investment Committee to continue providing 4 of the four year aver-age of our investments However depending on our portfolios performance his may mean dipping into the principal thus reducing our investment portfolio A vote of the lodge is necessary to withdraw money from the investment fund principal The second option is to raise our dues to make up for the lost 2 from the investment portfolio but this will mean a hefty raise in our dues probably along the lines of $4000 or more per brother An increase in dues requires a lodge vote to amend the lodge by laws The third option is to cut back on our scholarship offerings in some fashion Because the increased scholarships were a Lodge decision any change will have to be moved seconded discussed and voted on Whatever the Lodge decides to do it needs to be done in the next few months so that the incoming Master knows what to budget for I would therefore like to discuss this issue at the July stated meeting I realize this is an awkward time of year for such weighty matters but I would encourage everyone to come out to discuss and help resolve this issue now rather than waiting until it becomes a much larger problem If you cannot attend I would greatly appreciate hearing your thoughts on this matter SampF Michael Blodgett Master

Real brotherly love Throughout the year the Lodge receives requests for Masonic funerals or memo-rial services All of these requests must be met by the Lodge It is our duty to properly bury a deceased brother and to pay the reasonable costs thereof if necessary We as brothers of the deceased also have a duty to attend these services not

only because it is spelled out in the California Masonic Code it is our duty to attend ldquohellipif he can do so without great inconveniencerdquo but more importantly because this is our brother our friend to whom we owe respect and a dignified send off to ldquothat Lodge not made by hands eternal in the heavensrdquo Those of us who regularly attend these services are sometimes disappointed at the lack of masonic attendance At one recent funeral the three rows of seats reserved for Masons sat empty Only the two offi-ciating brothers were in attendance this stands in stark contrast to the first funeral where I acted as master It was very gratifying and assuring to me to be in the company of about 30 of my brothers and the family and clergy later expressed their gratitude for the wonderful Masonic turn out I know that balancing the many demands of the lodge and concordant bodies or important personal commitments can make it difficult to attend however I encourage all of us if at all possible to incorporate these services into our planning and thus show our love and respect for our deceased brothers SampF Gary Adkinson SW

Please Greet Our Newest Brother Aidan Noble was initiated an EA Mason on June 16th He is 28 years old lives in Port Hueneme and is not married He is a firearms and home defense instructor Born in Thousand Oaks he has lived in Ventura County most of his life Brother Ryan Phillips sitting as Master conferred the degree Wor Andy Little gave the lecture and Wor David VadBunker delivered the charge After a wonderful degree the Brethren en-joyed light refreshments

Brethren We are reaching the halfway mark of this Masonic year and the Lodge is running like a well oiled machine We are keeping up this momentum by having degrees through June and July We will be dark in August except for our Stated Meeting but it looks like we will be very busy when we come back in September Please keep in mind that these degrees are in effect an introduction for these candidates to the nature and

strength of the organization they are seeking to join There is no better way to demonstrate these qualities than to have those sideline seats filled with those who will be their brothers Let us always remember to care for each other as brothers and live by those masonic values that we have learned SampF Ryan Phillips Junior Warden

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN BY ROBERT FROST

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth

Then took the other as just as fair

And having perhaps the better claim

Because it was grassy and wanted wear

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black

Oh I kept the first for another day

Yet knowing how way leads on to way

I doubted if I should ever come back

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence

Two roads diverged in a wood and Imdash

I took the one less traveled by And that has made all the difference

Four Generations of Service and Fun

Last night I was sitting in Valley Lodge No 807 watching the Conejo Valley Chapter Order of DeMo-lay put on their Degree for two young men My Grandson was performing the part of Jacques DeMolay and as I was watching him I thought back some 20 years to when my son was a DeMolay there and performed the part of the Master Inquisitor Then my mind traveled back even further another 30 years to when I was a DeMolay in Davis Monthan Chapter performing the Junior Inquisitorrsquos part And Finally I thought of my Father and wondered what part he had played when he was a DeMolay But what is DeMolay you ask Well the quick answer is that it is a Masonic Youth Group for young men between the ages of 12 and 21 But it is really much more than that In 1919 Brother Frank S Land was working as the Director of the Masonic Relief and Employment Bureau of the Scottish Rite in Kansas City He met a young man named Louis Lower who had lost his Father about a year prior As they talked it be-came apparent to Brother Frank that there was a great need to help young men like Louis and his friends to grow into responsible young adults At Franks urging Louis gathered 8 other young men from his school and they formed a club They asked ldquoDadrdquo Land for someone to be an example from Masonic history They settled on Jacques DeMolay the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar They believed that he represent-ed the values of fidelity comradeship loyalty toleration and service The original 9 soon became 31 then spread all over the nation and Today DeMolay is located in 15 countries worldwide The Order of DeMolay has seven Cardinal Virtues taught as its basic ideals They are Filial love (love between a parent and child) Reverence for sacred things Courtesy Comradeship Fidelity Cleanness and Patriotism These are presented to the initiate when he receives his Initiatory Degree The Initiate is then re-quired to pass a proficiency similar to the proficiencies completed by Masons After a successful proficiency he receives the DeMolay Degree which is a representation of the final trials of Jacques DeMolay during the French Inquisition it teaches the lessons of Fidelity Comradeship and Loyalty to onersquos Brothers The Order also teaches service Service to your Family your Chapter your School your Community and your Country Service to my Chapter was particularly impressed upon me prior to even becoming a De-Molay My chapter to be met in and old abandoned barracks on Davis-Monthan Air Force Base There were many many layers of wax on the floors The Advisory Council decided that the wax should be removed They were able to obtain a large floor buffer to do the removal but the buildup was so bad the buffer could not remove it It was then decided that more weight on the buffer was needed and that this solution should come in the form myself and several of the other DeMolays So my first introduction to DeMolay and service was riding on a floor buffer I spent most of the Sunday Mornings when I was an active DeMolay at the Vet-erans Hospital in Tucson Az We would bring down the non-ambulatory patients to the Sunday Morning Service and then later I helped setup and run the Hospital Radio Station which broadcasted the Service While working on service and fundraising projects is important to DeMolay having fun such as going to Installations Dances Conclave the Rodeo Parade in Tucson and Magic Mountain for Devo Day and en-joying such activities as Laser Tag Paint Ball and Sports is just as important The Order of DeMolay has produced many notable and famous men such as Astronauts TV and Mov-ie Stars Politicians (including Presidents) Sports Stars and Military Leaders (For a more complete list please go to the following link httpwwwsuburban740orgwpdemolayfamous-demolays ) We have two local Chapters in our area Santa Barbara and Conejo Valley in Thousand Oaks If you would like more information about these chapters or if you know a Young Man who might be interested in joining DeMolay please go to the Lodge Web Site at httpchannelislandslodge214orgdemolay DeMoly has been a life long experience for me From all the Fun Service Conclaves Ritual Compe-titions Dances and Hard Work I did as an Active DeMolay to working with my Son as an Advisory Council Member and now working with my Grandson as he grows into the fine young man I know he will become William Kavanaugh PM Past Master Councilor Davis-Monthan Chapter
