Chapter 1 – Week 1

Camera Movement and DirectionIntroduction:

The scene which I have chosen to analyse is the film The Dark Knight (a part of The Batman series). The scene is called The Joker’s Pencil Trick scene. Here is a link to the scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8f_mE7Zc5w

Camera movement is shown throughout this scene clearly which I will investigate into more detail below but first I am going to explain about camera movement and direction. There are actually camera movement techniques to move the audience when the scene calls for a Tilt, Pan, Zoom, Dolly or Track. When we learn a new skill or technique we need to learn the basic moves or techniques that define that function. However, Camera Direction is slightly different in the sense that, it is the direction which actors or different objects appear to be moving on the screen from the camera. During the session we investigated this and also including this key information: continuous movement, showing a change in direction on screen through ‘Neutral Direction’ (filming a character head on).

The short scene from The Dark Knight is only three minutes, not long at all – which fits the requirements for the length which was a minimum of two minutes and no longer than four minutes. At the start of the scene the camera starts by panning from one character to another. As it pans from left to right a new character is introduced The Joker who plays the main character in the story and is presented as the villain. Many pieces of equipment can be used to create the effect of a Pan which include a Slider and a Pan by using the camera on a tripod. Most likely a Slider was used as this is commonly used in the industry currently.

Next I believe a Dolly has been used in the OTSS - Over the Shoulder Shot - which introduces The Joker in more detail. This type of shot has also incorporated a wide angle to demonstrate to the audience what type of location the characters are in compared to their surroundings. The OTSS (Over the Shoulder shot) type has been deliberately used to show the character’s perspectives which the viewers can picture clearly.

Camera Direction seems to begin in the scene when The Joker walks towards the table and people, the camera turns to his face to show other people’s perspective of looking at The Joker. This shot type goes from a Medium Long shot (MLS) to a Medium Close up (MCU). When the object was placed, in this case a pencil the camera moves back to The Joker’s perspective. At this point in the scene, The Joker is being violent towards other characters and slaps someone’s head onto the pencil which is strange and absurd. A Boom is used at this point in time, as you can probably see but the sudden sharp tilt from high to low.

In the next section of the scene the camera zooms into the characters creating tension between the characters’ relationships and the audience. Next, The Joker stands up for dramatic effect, however this also has some significance which is when The Joker stands up they move backwards in the direction of the camera. This is significant because it shows the change in direction on screen for the main character in the scene. Lastly, at the end when The Joker leaves through the door the Director has added in the idea of having a Midshot move into a long shot through continuous camera movement. This idea is extremely effective as it flows well and breaks the scene up.

Conclusion:

Overall you can see that both camera movement and screen direction is used in this scene. Screen direction is used through The Joker as he walks through the room. Towards the end when The Joker heads out the door, two shots are used to show a continuous flow of direction and suggests that his direction is only one way through that door. Personally I believe this was a suitable example of showing camera movement and screen direction and I was able to analyse it to the best of my ability.

Screen Direction StoryboardIntroduction:

For this next task we needed to generate a clearly structured storyboard for a short scene that clarifies the use of camera movement and maintaining screen direction. During the session we investigated these skills and measures in depth but now it is time to settle them into practise. The task had certain requirements which we had to conform to – these included having a minimum of six shots and maximum of eighteen shots. In the end, I accomplished this by getting a total of nine shots.

Shots 1-3:

My own photoIn the figure above I have displayed the first three shots by drawing them and described shot types and techniques for each. The location that I have determined to use in college is a simple area that can be easily accessed and used. The first shot departs with a Tilt from high to low revealing a Long Shot of a person. The main piece of equipment to compose a Tilt would be by just using a DSLR Camera on a Tripod and using the handle loosely to slowly tilt creating the required effect. The Long Shot will expose to the viewers where the character is placed compared to its surroundings and overall clarifies any background features. Shot two, is in a completely different position as you can refer to above. The person is going to move with the camera – this technique is called Tracking. The equipment that I would use here would be a Dolly as it will allow easy movement in order to produce this astounding shot. Here I would place a Medium Shot as it will enable more focus on the actor’s upper half of their body and their gestures which the actor performs (for example taking a phone call). Lastly the third shot is of the girl strolling towards the door. They will be positioned from right to left, meanwhile the camera will be composing a clean, simple pan movement which will inform the audience that the direction is continuous throughout the dawn of the scene. Throughout most of the first three shots the angle remains the same which will be a straight on angle. At this point the equipment required here would just consist of a Camera and a Tripod. The Tripod here would work by adjusting the panning handle making it looser and slowly moving it smoothly from right to left while the object in the viewing screen moves.

Shots 4-6:

My own photoNext shots four to six movement and direction occurs more frequently to be clearly presented. Shot four is an Over the Shoulder Shot of the object walking forwards. As she walks the camera will be adjusted so every movement is captured as well as other figures moving in the picture. This shot will start from the feet position and drift smoothly upwards pointing out the back of her head as well as the image in front of her shoulder (ahead of her). To film this shot I would utilize a Glidecam as it will allow me to compose a smooth gliding effect. This method is a lot more hands free as you are not using a Tripod which is why a Glidecam is essential. Shot five continues from shot four, the camera will travel from shot four round to the side of objects right shoulder. The camera will underway from the side with the object walking forwards – at this point all you will able to observe the side profile of the object walking – this is a Medium Shot to focus on the character’s expression and gestures while she walks. This technique again is called Track as the camera moves with the character (so a Glidecam will still be utilized). Next shot six, is a Medium Shot of the girl as this shot continues from shot four and five. I deliberately kept the same shot type in order to keep the sequence flow and be more continuous to watch as a viewer. The Camera Movement technique used here will be Zoom as will focus on the character’s face and reaction. Zoom can be used in many ways and is commonly used in more current films for example The Dark Knight.

Shots 7-9:

Shots seven to nine continue the movement and direction starting off with a Close Up of the character’s shoes/feet. They carry on moving forwards. A Slider is used here as equipment to produce a clean cut from left to right. This time the camera is not moving along side the object but the camera stays in the same position but just sliding. Shot eight, is changing location and presents that the character moves outside. This shot firstly begins with the push to open button just in focus (leaving the background blurry). As the character reaches for the button the camera pull focuses on the hand and button then pushes the focus onto the background as they walk through the automatic door.

The angle used here will be a Dutch Angle to show a different sort of perspective for the audience to view. Finally, shot nine is a Tilt to finalize the whole scene as it started off with a Tilt so I thought it would only be best to finish the scene off with what it started with. Tilting ensures that the audience sees a whole observation of not just the character but the background as it is from the higher part to the lower part of the screen. I have kept the Dutch Angle in this shot too to keep the flow of the current scene. The character will be facing forwards presenting the viewers just the back of their head (MCU – Medium Close Up).

Equipment:

The main pieces of equipment which I hope to incorporate when practising this task would include: Tripod, DSLR Camera, Glidecam, Slider, Dolly and Track. Most of these pieces of equipment used in the appearance in keeping shots smooth and more professional. I have investigated all these techniques and pieces of equipment in my practical session. They are all high tech and expensive but definitely worth in investing in. I actually own a mini version of a glidecam – this piece requires you to get a perfect smooth shot and making it very stable on screen. The key of setting up a Glidecam is ensuring that you get it balanced when the camera is placed on it otherwise the effect of it won’t be shown on screen. Next, a Slider is an essential tool for achieving a precise and controlled camera Tracking Movement. It is a reliable, steady and extremely lightweight portable solution that Videographers can take with them everywhere and effortlessly set up in minutes. Then we have, a Dolly is a wheeled cart or similar device used in Filmmaking and Television Production to compose smooth horizontal camera movements. The camera is mounted to the Dolly and the Camera Operator or camera assistant usually ride on the Dolly to push the dolly back and forth. The camera Dolly may be used as a shooting platform on any surface but is often raised onto a Track, to create smooth movement on a horizontal axis known as a tracking shot. Camera Dollies have several steering mechanisms available to the Dolly grip.

Conclusion:

I am happy with the work I have composed for my storyboard short scene. I have tried to demonstrate all the key techniques which I investigated in the lesson and put them into practice to demonstrate that I have understood them. My scene was not very long at all and has been packed with a great deal of skills and knowledge which needed to be contained.

Twitter & Instagram JourneySocial Media is a very important feature in order to raise your profile as it enables people to interact with your interests and passions which you can vary by sharing your online presence. As part of the third term at college we have been discussing ways to advertise work on digital platforms. I have created Twitter and Instagram accounts related to my work for Film and Television Level 3. This will give my work and me the opportunity to expose my work to other people and film influencers. I believe my work has the potential to be successful in the future.

I also have a YouTube channel which I created when I started my college course. My college YouTube account is called FilmTV2018_AT, which is the same as my Instagram and Twitter accounts. I decided to have the same name associated with all three accounts as it will enable people to remember my work and my brand name. It was helpful that this name was available as it would help with consistency and allow the public to remember my work and my ability.

On my YouTube account I have posted all videos and footage that I have produced, edited and filmed. I have published five videos which include: The Hello Project, Slating, Foley Sound and the Surfing edit. With these videos, I am extremely proud because I wanted to share and expose my work to this high profile social media platform which I am hoping that it receives a great deal of praise and new people are aware of my skills and final products that I have produced.

Twitter and Instagram is a great area to share things instantly and anywhere. At the moment I have posted one project on each medium called Unknown Hello Project – I shared a twenty second snippet of them as both of the platforms have a maximum time for each video which is uploaded. I did however attach the hyperlink to my YouTube Channel on the Instagram and Twitter post where influencers may view the whole video if they wish. I have also incorporated the same profile picture and banner for all of the social media platforms as again viewers will be able to recognise the brand and my work. Every week I will be adding new content to my Twitter and Instagram accounts as it is important that I am

Regularly keeping my content unique and dynamic and not become stale. To also be more relevant on these digital platforms I will be monitoring them each week to see who has seen my posts and who has started to follow my account.

Hashtags allow other people to search for something more specific and could potentially see your posts. It can be a word or phrase preceded by a hash sign (#) which is used in many places such as social media websites and applications like Twitter. On my recent post on Twitter and Instagram I have included key hashtags which relate to the post or image I am referring to. These key hashtags include #Cinematographer, #Photography, #Film #Director and a series of others.

Lastly the following of people is key as that is reciprocated as you will be able to increase your following rapidly. Make sure to follow people and influencers who have similar posts to yours and have the same interests as you as it will make them eager to visit your page. I have followed fifty people on Twitter and Instagram. Most of these people have been Cinematographers, Film Directors, Sound Directors and Production companies (small and large scale). A few examples of people I followed: Karan Johar (Bollywood Director), Andy Best, Dharma Productions, Fox Star Studios. Some of these have reciprocated back already and seem to be keen on some of the work I am producing.

Overall, I have enjoyed creating these social media accounts as they will ensure that professional individuals in the film industry can view my work which I have published. It is crucial I post regularly each week to allow my followers to view my development and they hopefully will give me evaluative feedback which would both be interesting and to develop my portfolio. Next week I will be reviewing the accounts and seeing the activity.

General Interactive Media ReportIntroduction:

Many people currently use Interactive Media as a method of communication, it has actually changed everything about today’s society. Mobile apps, websites, games and social media have all transformed the way we work, play, learn and interact with each other. With new interactive technologies like virtual reality we are only just beginning to understand the huge potential of interactive media to transform and enhance our lives.

What is Interactive Media?

A great deal of people are actually interested in what Interactive Media is. Interactive Media is a method of communication in which the program’s outputs depend on the user’s inputs. Interactive media engages the user and interacts with them in a way that non-interactive media does not. Also, it can be an integration of digital media such as electronic texts, graphics and sound into a structured digital environment that allows people to interact with the data. The point of interactive media is to encourage the visitor to invest more time and effort into your brand. When visitors visit or are invested in your brand or website they are more likely to interact with the brand and become more of a fan (loyal customer). An example of this could be as simple as having a Twitter button that visitors can use to follow you on Twitter, encouraging them to like your brand page on Facebook or to provide appropriate feedback forms on your site. The diagram below shows this and is used to this current day to attract customers.

Examples of Interactive Media – Past & Present:

A common radio station called BBC Asian Network is a great example of demonstrating the use of texting in questions to answer. This particular method was popular in the past however it is used in specific radio stations, most of these include BBC radio stations. Some present day examples of Interactive Media forms include voting through an app for television shows like Britain’s Got Talent, X Factor and other similar reality shows. This allows the audience to download the app and vote for their favourite contestant rapidly and in a more efficient way for free feeling more engaged and involved with the programme. These apps can engage their audience even more because it allows them to be a judge for the show and play games.

Some more examples from this present day include social media platforms as these sites use graphics and text to allow users to share photos, videos and information about themselves, as well as chat and play games. Video games are another type of Interactive Media. Players use controllers to respond to visual and sound cues on the screen that are generated by a computer program. One of my favourite games which has astounding graphics is Mortal Kombat XL. This is definitely a good example from this present day as many people play games on their XBOX or PlayStations.

Conclusion:

Overall, Interactive Media can be used in many different approaches which we all use on an everyday basis even without realising. Many examples have been discovered and have been used either in the past or even to the present day. Who knows how Interactive Media will look in the future there may even be a completely different way or approach to it which we will not know yet until forthcoming years.

Chapter 2 – Week 2

Big Billy Goat Gruff Practical TaskIntroduction

The overall task involved creating a short scene by forming into groups to perform a scene from the ‘Billy Goat Gruff’ story. The scene was extremely short and allowed us to produce a variety of Foley sounds to insert where a sound effect appeared on the script. On the script the section which our group needed to require for the task is highlighted in yellow for us to indicate which section we need to record sounds for. To generate these Foley sounds we were given the opportunity to select different objects for example utilizing a worn skateboard to provoke the trip trap sound. Our group especially had the opportunity to record our dialogue and sounds in the radio room which seemed very high tech and enabled us to achieve the best possible sound quality. However, some sounds weren’t possible to create as it was too risky. Another method was to use ‘Sound Bible’ where you can use public domain sound effects for projects. This occurred for the splash sound effect as it was possible not to produce a splash water sound. Once we were equipped with the sounds and footage we provoked an audio file in Avid by inserting all the dialogue together and sound effects. I did this by using transitions to fade in the sounds to keep the flow of it more continuous.

What were the potential problems of the task?

The potential problems of the task which I encountered were picking up ambient environment sounds. This was extremely difficult as the zoom recorder wasn’t able to pick up much sound apart from cars which couldn’t fit with the scene. But after a few tries in three different locations we eventually received some sounds for example, birds chirping and other sounds. Next time, we can ensure that we find the appropriate microphone which can pick up enough sound. Sometimes microphones can pick up too much sound or sometimes too little.

Another problem which occurred was that we had to redo a couple of sounds as the quality we picked up by the zoom recorder wasn’t at a high standard. We decided to record everything in the radio room as most of the background noise was absorbed and didn’t appear in the recording especially when we played it back. This made me and my group more confident. The last main problem was being able to produce some sound effects these included the rushing water. As in the current location water noises were not available so we couldn’t create this sound which was extremely frustrating.

How can you get the sounds that you need for the task?

To produce these Foley Sounds we picked many objects which were everyday items such as cushions, fuse box, hammer, pipe and a skateboard. Me and my group managed to pick up a few to experiment with and try to create sounds utilizing them in different ways. By using the old skate board we could create the trip trap sound (hooves sound) and then to make a splash effect. I used a website called ‘Sound Bible’ as it is free and reliable to use for educational projects. They are high quality and easy to use. Another part of audio was creating a rushed effect of when it states in the script ‘Then the troll rushed’. We did this by running with the microphone which ended up working and managed to achieve the sound effect needed for the task. I enjoyed the pleasure in using the radio room as there was no echoes whereas when we recorded in the college there was a significant amount of distraction noises in the background which were unnecessary.

What are the best methods to record your sound?

My group and I used a couple of methods to begin with as we wanted to find the right one and to get the best possible quality to ensure it sounds decent and top notch. Firstly, we attempted recording it outside the college which was not a wise decision as we didn’t realise the microphone would pick up obvious noises in the background. Secondly we attempted to record inside the college at the end of the corridor where was much more silent. When we replayed and reviewed the sounds the quality was not to its best standard. In the end we found that the best method was recording it in the radio room. However, there was a wait to get in. While we waited we planned out how we wanted to record the sounds and produce the sounds. When being in the radio room it was essential that we adjusted the placement of the microphone as it was too high. I adjusted to my mouth level then moved it to the floor level as we performed our Foley Sounds on the floor as the surface was flat and perfect enough to do this.

What are the best tools for the task?

The best tools consisted of included all the objects needed to create the ‘Foley Sounds’ as these were vital to have. Also some other tools needed were the Zoom Recorder which we used when we first recorded the sounds. This was actually one of the main pieces of equipment used. When recording all the dialogues we needed to ensure that we held the script in order to refer to. By reading off a script ensures that stumbling with words doesn’t occur as this can be crucial when recording so mistakes aren’t made. Another tool which we used when recording the first time through was using headphones in order to have a clearer sound. But obviously, this changed when we decided to record our dialogues in the radio room

Conclusion

Overall, I enjoyed learning new skills and demonstrating them through the use of Avid. Sound is one of my favourite subject areas which I have a great deal of knowledge in and have a great pleasure experimenting with. I liked recording in the radio room as it allowed me to learn something new and to learn about some new technology which is excellent as it presents that I have already got experience with radio and broadcast equipment. I overall feel proud of my work which I have generated and would be more than happy to share it with everyone including my YouTube channel.

Instagram and Twitter ReviewLast week I set up a professional ‘Instagram’ and ‘Twitter’ account which is where I am able to publish all my work for film influencers and other individuals to view. Personally, I believe that social media is the way forward in order to share projects and work related pieces so it can become colossal and can be recognised. Today I reviewed the activity on each and quite a lot has been happening for the past week which is a positive sign to notice. I noticed that many more people have been on my accounts and viewed the ‘Hello Project’ post which I published last week as my first post.

Now on ‘Twitter’ I have gained only a few followers which are only five accounts. This may not be many but it is a start. These five accounts consist of people from many countries. Here is the list of accounts which now follow me: @ShotListerApp, @TBI_Logistics, @FilmmakingQuote, @CopperPictures, @TheGoogleAnku. It seems to show that Film Productions and filming accounts have followed me back as I follow them. I decided to follow approximately fourteen more people these people included the cast and crew from one of my favourite Netflix TV shows ‘Stranger Things’. Some people including: @FinnSkata (Actor in Stranger Things), @justindoble (Writer for Stranger Things) etc. On this ‘Twitter’ account as well as my ‘Instagram’ account I am going to publish my ‘Billy Goat Gruff’ work which I have just completed for this week and will see how many people will notice it. I uploaded my ‘Hello Project’ shooting script by using the caption – ‘My Shooting script for my project’ and using these hashtags (#) to get people noticing it: Hello project, Filmmaking, Film, Directors, Cameramen, Cinematographer, Cinema, Short Film, Golden Globes, Filmfare Awards. These hashtags are continuous and current for the post and events which have been happening from the past week for example the ‘Golden Globes’. I am posting something each week this week is my shooting script for the ‘Hello Project’ and last week was my short film – ‘The Unknown’.

Whereas on my ‘Instagram’ I have a great deal of followers compared to my ‘Twitter’ – I have gained thirty two followers which is quite an achievement. Many of my followers are Film related accounts and Production companies. To gain more followers I have published the same post as on my ‘Twitter’ for this week as I am trying to stay more consist on both accounts with the same content this is because many more people can recognise my work. I have inserted the same photo, caption and hashtags (#) to gain the same attention as ‘Twitter’ but on ‘Instagram’. Again I have followed some more individuals and actors from my favourite TV show Stranger Things – these include Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer (actors) etc.

As I can see overall from both accounts a significant amount of people are following me on my ‘Instagram’ page like Directors and Cinematographers etc. If you click on their posts or accounts, it usually presents to the audience in their bio about them and what they do. From what I have seen they have been film production companies and Cinematographers and seem to be producing some high standard work. One account who is following me is called ‘Magic Haus Film’. They have inspired me to produce more films as the way they post is extremely high quality. I don’t really have a particular person who stands out for me on ‘Twitter’ as I have not gained enough followers on there yet in order to specify.

As above I have explained who I have followed on both platforms these mainly include actors and the filming crew from a ‘Netflix TV Show called Stranger Things’ which is popular right now. I have followed roughly the same people on each. Personally I believe that this is significant as my followers will start to commence to view what my cinema interests are in. It would be an honour if any of them noticed my work by liking one of my posts or commenting on one.

The basis for my new hashtags was to ensure that new people are following my page on both platforms so they can see what work concludes. By having different hashtags enables different people viewing your profile and soon enough they will begin to follow you. Every week with a new post for each platform I will include some new but old hashtags which I have used before but also ones which I haven’t used before as new people will appear which would be good for recognition.

My ‘Twitter’ and ‘Instagram’ have now got two posts both being the ‘Hello Project’ video task and my Shooting script for my ‘Hello Project’. I got some feedback on my ‘Instagram’ especially someone had commented the thumbs up emoji on the first post which I thought was some short feedback and would have liked them to elaborate more but it doesn’t matter as in future posts people may be doing this which would be great deal. But on my ‘Twitter’ I have only got likes which is still excellent as it shows how people are able to quickly see my work and like it. This tells me that people are enjoying my content as they are interested in it.

Overall I have discovered and investigated many things on both of the ‘Instagram’ and ‘Twitter’ accounts and viewed the recent activity. Everything has been positive on both which is a great deal to me as it tells me that people are enjoying my posts and coming from many areas of the platform. However I would prefer if a significant number of people gave more feedback as it would verbally tell me how I could improve on my posts work and page as a whole.

Specific Interactive Media ReportBelow demonstrate five key examples which I have investigated about current Interactive Media which are all available to us now in this current day. The five TV show examples which I have discovered include, ‘Dancing on Ice’, Celebrity Big Brother, Netflix launching ‘Choose your own adventure’ interactive shows, ‘4oD\ and lastly the show ‘Dirty Work’ (interactive comedy series).

The first show which I have been enjoying is called ‘Dancing on Ice’. This programme consists of celebrities who pair with professional figure skaters to ice dance competitively. Many people watch this show as it has an interesting narrative which engages the audience and viewers. The style of the programme is great deal of fun and often excites people. ‘Dancing on Ice’ is available to everyone anywhere. You can view it on Channel Three which is ‘ITV’ or you can watch it on their online player which is called ‘ITV Hub/player’. This option allows you to watch the programme another time and for catch up purposes. Personally, I believe that the main target audience for this programme is people aged 20-60+. This is because it has a wide range target audience as many people enjoy watching dance and taking part in the competition. People who watch the programme either have a passion for dance or are interested in the idea of dancing on a different surface, ice. The interactive element in the show is that each viewer is able to place their vote and decision for their favourite skaters for free which is the bonus feature. Some other features on the app include being able to see breaking news, exclusive previews and gossip when is happens. The app is new for the programme as many other programmes have been using it and experimenting with it so they decided to utilize the idea and to provoke something for everyone to utilize. Overall it is a success as I have used the app a couple of times to vote for free. The feature engages people to watch it as people want to be able to vote without a price as it can be a hassle to pay. I am also loving the programme as well as other people around the country and would continue watching and taking part in the show every Sunday at 6pm.

Next is ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ this has a very similar element as to ‘Dancing on Ice’ with the viewers being able to have their role in contributing. The style of ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ enables the viewers to engage more with their favourite celebrity which they enjoy watching on TV. I would suggest that the main genre of the programme is reality television as it presents to the audience about live, current events which occur in the Big Brother house. The programme can be found on live television Channel Five on Sunday at 9pm. Or on catch up on the Channel 5 website. On there you can access all episodes including eviction shows. The programme is on at a late time which suggests that the target audience isn’t aimed at young children as sometimes there is rude content. I would say that the main target audience includes people aged 18+. To capture viewer’s attention ‘Celebrity Big Brother’ have incorporated an interactive element which is within the app available on the app store etc. The free app from Channel 5 will keep you up to date with must see clips and breaking news from the ‘CBB’ house. The app also gives you the chance to have your say on all the hot topics and make decisions that will affect the celebrity housemates. The viewers can ensure that they keep an eye on the polls table for their chance to become more involved. Overall, the app has been very useful. I have not used it yet but from what other people have said it seems to be successful as gives the chance for viewers to be social able on there as there is a Twitter section and Facebook section for the audience to engage with other people watching the programme.

This next show is very interesting as it is a different form of interacting with its audience. ‘Netflix’ have launched interactive TV shows that let viewers choose their own adventures and make decisions for their favourite characters on the TV streaming service. Personally I like this style of interaction as it allows each viewer to be more wise with their chose and decision within the show. I believe at the moment this feature is only available on ‘Netflix’ which is a paid online streaming film site. However, in the future this will soon expand on other popular platforms for example ‘Amazon Prime’. The feature will first be available on children’s shows but the company said there is the technology for producers and expand on it widely. The main target audience which is aimed at is children as many of the programmes which have been created with this feature have been children related for example ‘Puss in Boots’ and ‘Shrek.’ Children will be able to

choose where to take the story next as they make key choices in a string of shows. Some shows including ‘Puss in Boots’ has been produced already with the interactive element within it. At one point of the story ‘Puss in Boots’ finds himself in the story of ‘Goldilocks’ with the three bears staring at him. The viewer is asked to make a choice of whether the bears are friends or foes. The thirteen different choices throughout the episodes lead to two different conclusions to the show which is aimed at children aged between four and six. The viewer will have to physically use the remove control for the TV using the arrows to choose options. However, on a tablet or iPad you can choose by tapping the highlighted option. Overall, I like this feature and believe it is a good way for children to make wise decisions about things in life as they have learnt how to by using this fun method on ‘Netflix’. This feature will grow across the media board and soon enough will be popular elsewhere.

Next is the use of ‘4oD’ as this was the first brand to bring on demand television. It is a required service by Channel Four that allows internet users with a TV license to watch some of their favourite programmes online. After ‘4oD’ the ‘BBC’ came along with their ‘BBC iPlayer’. Many more people would use ‘BBC iPlayer’ as it had a slicker app and soon took over ‘4oD’. But the competition turned out to be healthy as it led to ‘4oD’ adapting and becoming a better product. There are significant amounts of shows which can be watched all over this platform including ‘EastEnders’ which is a reality fiction series. ‘4oD’ is more of an interactive media platform. Again the target audience is extremely wide as many different programmes are found here. The interactive element for this platform is that people can utilize this app anywhere to watch their favourite programmes and download some of them onto the app. Overall, I believe this is a success as many more people have been involving themselves into using the app as it is more accessible than watching programmes on TV. It is an easy fun way to watch new and old programmes for free even with a TV license.

Finally, the last TV show which I have to share about is called ‘Dirty Work’. It is a comedy web television series which was produced five years ago and stars many famous actors. The comedic adventures of three Los Angelenos working in the crime scene clean up business. The show pings you with phone calls and text messages throughout giving you an inner look at the character’s own interactions. The programme allows you to make decisions again which is a fun way to interact and get involved. You can view ‘Dirty Work’ on ‘Netflix’ or even on ‘YouTube’ but you will have to pay for it on ‘YouTube’ whereas on ‘Netflix’ it will be free if you have a free monthly trial. I have not seen the programme myself but would love to view as it appears to be very funny and comedic to watch. I believe that the target audience would probably be my age upwards 16+ as there are no inappropriate elements. Overall I am not sure whether this programme would necessary be a success or failure probably more of a failure as it is a lot harder to watch and get hold of. As you need ‘Netflix’ to watch it which is a paid site.

Overall, I have researched and investigated more into five examples of current interactive media shows and platforms. I have discovered their target audience who would watch it the genre of each show whether it was a success or failure in my opinion and other people’s opinions. And, what the main interactive element was for each in order to gain viewers attention to watch and engage with the show more.

Retrofit- Life on MarsIntroduction:

The Scene which I have decided to choose is the opening scene which begins when a crime has occurred up until when the character ‘Sam Tyler’ (detective inspector) walks into the office in 1973 as this covers most of the key elements. During the session we watched the whole first episode whilst taking notes on audio and visual problems which needed to be solved to generate the product we watched. These key elements included technology, locations, cars, period props etc.

Visual Solutions:

At the beginning of the opening scene a blue retro car has been placed which has been followed with a number of other different retro cars. As you move further into the scene a great deal of police cars are lined up right outside the Police Station. I have found many retro cars similar to the ones in the scene which could potentially be used if someone was to hire one for a colossal film.

Period costumes are used in films or TV shows to represent to the audience what time period the story has been set in as this is important to send across to the audience. Above shows this and many costumes which are made for this time period. I would have to say that the men costumes are better quality and are very similar to what is worn in ‘Life on Mars’ compared to the women’s costumes which aren’t suited. In the scene Sam is wearing a black leather blazer and flared trousers alongside what looks like a yellow large collared shirt.

Another visual solution is when Sam walks into the office and begins to look around when he notices that he is in a completely different time period. Period props are used within the scene at this point in time. An example of a prop used is a retro old fashioned phone with a circular dial. Another period prop to indicate to the audience that the character is not in a current day is that a typewriter is shown as the character moves through the office. I believe you can hire both of these items for a cheap price or you can even buy one but it is definitely better to hire one as you may not need to use it again for another movie or TV show.

Technology is key when it comes to visuals as the equipment as this is what helps achieve the particular shots. I believe at the extreme start of the scene many pieces of technology have been used to achieve ‘High Shots’ as well as ‘Moving Shots’. A ‘High Shot’ has been used when the camera overlooks a park/playground where a crime has just occurred. A Drone may have been used here to get a wide angled shot of the park. Many locations have been used in shots to provoke a scene and change in area of filming. One of the main areas is shooting in a Police Station. This may be difficult unless you have suitable permission from the constable there whether it is appropriate to film a scene there. Lastly for visuals to produce the section of the episode where the man gets hit over by a car you would need a stunt man or a ‘dog’ to play the part so no one is hurt as this can be very dangerous when actually shooting this. Audio Solutions:

As the character walks into the Police Station office you can hear ambient sounds which consist of typewriter sounds, echoes, and other disturbances. In order to provoke these ambient sounds you need a ‘Foley Artist’ who will be able to use different objects to generate these sounds which the Editor will be able to add on after filming to create an effect with. Lastly you will need a Music Composer to provoke all the music used an example of music being used in the TV show is when the girl has been removed from prison and both of the policemen have a chat outside the prison cell. The music is described to be fun non diegetic and has been generated using a drum kit. Music is used elsewhere in the episode of the TV show it is mostly the same type of music and genre which is seventies music.

Conclusion:

Overall many different people are used to create a film including composers and ‘Foley Artists’ as well as being prepared in terms of technology, props and costumes. I will be adding more to this document next week of some other elements from the first episode of ‘Life on Mars’. All these things are required in order to even make a film as this is what brings the film together. I tried to pick out key elements from the episode including my chosen scene which was from where a crime has been discovered up until when the policeman realizes he has been placed into a different era. I found many people to hire for the film and to hire props and objects which are all very appropriate and overall I feel happy with these chosen items.

How to add pictures, graphs, etc to your Table of Figures in your Portfolio

To make your portfolio even more professional than it already is, and to be correct, academically, you can add pictures, graphs etc to the already created Table of Figures.

This is how you do it …..

Add your picture/graph etc at the point you want it to be.

Right click on the picture/graph etc

Click on – Insert Caption

At the top of the box there is a line saying Caption

It will automatically tell you if it is Figure 1,2,3 etc – DO NOT ALTER THAT

Then put in the citation for the bibliography (after the Figure 1,2,3 ) and what you want to call it i.e. Focus Group Graph.

Click – Close

Remember to note the layout, so you do the same for each figure i.e.
