Overview
❑ Surah 113 and 114
Surah Al-Falaq and Naas
❑ Surah Al-Falaq
1) Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak
2) From the evil of that which He created
3) And from the evil of darkness when it settles
4) And from the evil of the blowers in knots
5) And from the evil of an envier when he envies
Translation
❑ Surah An-Naas
1) Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,
2) The Sovereign of mankind
3) The God of mankind
4) From the evil of the retreating whisperer
5) Who whispers [evil] into the breasts of mankind
6) From among the jinn and mankind
❑ Last two Surahs of the Quran (Surah 113 and 114)
❑ Mu’wadaitain
❑These two surahs i.e. Surah Al-Falaq and An-Naas are different surahs but they are deeply related
❑ Revealed together as pair
❑ Pair surahs generally presents two aspect of the same topic and thus comprehensively covering the subject
❑ Both talks about taking the refuge from the unseen
Introduction
❑ Both types of narrations exist that they were revealed in Makkah and Madinah
❑ Scholars think it could have been revealed in Makkah but reminded about these Surahs in Madinah in a particular situation
❑ The revelations and the teachings provoked all type of evil people in Makkah
❑ Resistance of the Message by the opponents in different ways, including trying to do magic
❑ In Madinah, some Jews tried to spell magic on prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)
❑ Allah revealed or reminded these two Surahs to cure the magic
Period and Context of Revelation
❑ Seek refuge from Jinn
❑Abu Saeed al-Khudri said: “The Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.S.) used to seek refuge with Allah from the jinn and from the evil eye until the Mu’wadaitain were revealed, and when they were revealed he started to recite them and not anything else” (narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2058; he said it is hasan ghareeb. Also narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 5494; Ibn Maajah, 3511).

❑Narrated by Abdullah bin Khabeeb who said that, “we got out once on a rainy night and it was very dark and we looked for the prophet (S.A.W.S.) to pray for us and then we found him and he said ‘Did you pray?’ and I didn’t say anything. Then he said, ‘Say’ but I didn’t say anything. Then he said, ‘Say’ but again I didn’t say anything. Then he said, ‘Say’ So, I said, ‘What should I say?’ He said, ‘Qul HoowAllahu Ahad and Muwaidaitain when you enter the evening and when you wake up in the morning three times and it will protect you from everything’” (Tirmidhee # 3575), Aby Daud (# 5084).
Blessings and Benefits
❑ When Sick
❑ Aisha (RA) narrated that whenever Allah’s Apostle (S.A.W.S.) became sick, he would recite Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas and then blow his breath over his body. When he became seriously ill, I used to recite (these two Surahs) and rub his hands over his body for its blessings. [Narrarted by Saheeh Al-Bukhari: The Book of the Virtues of the Qur’aan, 5016]
❑ Before sleeping
❑Aisha (RA) narrated that whenever Allah’s Apostle (S.A.W.S.) went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face, and front of his body. He used to do that three times. [Narrated by Saheeh Al-Bukhari: Book of the Virtues of the Qur’aan, 5017]
Blessings and Benefits
❑ Say… emphasis for attention and indication to spread the message
❑ Refuge – Specifically with the unseen
❑Rab Al-falaq
❑ Falaq – not just day break
❑ Light breaks the darkness
❑ Seeds which asunder to produce
❑ Big bang which started the entire creation
❑ Lord of the dawn – indication that the change is towards positive
❑ Ponder over the might of Allah, He bring the Sun by rotating earth
First Ayah
❑ Falaq – Khalaq
❑ Break – Creation
❑ Evil
❑ not in itself
❑absence of goodness
❑ absence of light is darkness
❑ that which will cause someone harm
❑ relative
❑ He created – He has full power over that
❑Good and bad from the Lord but we normally ascribe good
with the Lord and bad with us and Satan
❑ Sharr also means sufferings
❑ Some sharr might appear good but it leads to sufferings
Second Ayah
❑ Next verses – explanation of ‘Whatever He Created’

❑ Darkness generally related to evil
❑ It also means the decline of the sources of sustenance

Third Ayah

❑ Naffasath - feminine – referring to the nafs

❑ Worst category of evil – to do magic
Fourth Ayah
❑ Daily blowing by the Enemy
❑ Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصsaid, "When any one of you sleeps, Satan ties three knots at the back of his neck. He recites this incantation at every knot: `You have a long night, so sleep.' If he awakes and remembers Allah, one knot is loosened. If he performs Wudoo, the (second) knot is loosened; and if he performs prayer, (all) knots are loosened and he begins his morning in a happy and refreshed mood; otherwise, he gets up in bad spirits and sluggish state.'' [Al-Bukhari, Muslim]
Fourth Ayah
❑ Envy
❑ Worst manner of Evil
❑ Wanting something other have
❑ Jealousy is technically not Hasad
❑ If you have that burning intention and a wish that the person loose it then it is Hasad
❑ Like challenging Allah’s wisdom and authority
❑ ‘When he envies’ – normally person may be good but when he does envy he is bad
Fifth Ayah
❑ The Prophet ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصsaid, "Beware of envy because envy consumes (destroys) the virtues just as the fire consumes the firewood,'' or he said "grass.'' [Abu Dawud]
Fifth Ayah
❑ Seek refuge from Lord of all creations
❑ From three evils
❑ Darkness
❑ Blowers
❑ Envier
❑Common about these evils is unseen
