    Chapter 11

    In Hong Kong and Macao (1888)

    February 1888

    Rizal was forced to leave his country for a

    second time. He was then a full grown man of ! years of

    age" a #racticing #hysician" and a recognized man of

    letters.

    $he first time he went a%road in June 1882" he

    was a mere lad of 1" a youthful student in research of

    wisdom in the old world" a romantic idealist with %eautiful

    dreams of emanci#ating his #eo#le from %andage %y the

    magic #ower of his #en. $ime had changed. Rizal at !

    was an em%ittered victim of human ini&uities a

    disillusioned dreamer a frustrated reformer.

    The trip to Hong Kong

    'n February 3, 1888" after a short stay of si months

    in his %eloved calam%a" Rizal left manila let manila for

    Hong Kong on a%road the zafiro.

    'n February 7 He was sic and sad during thecrossing of the ha##y cho##y *hina +ea. He did not get

    off his shi# when it made %rief sto#over at ,moy.

    Three reasons:

    1. He was not feeling well. It was raining hard" and

    -. He heard that the city was dirty.

    He arrived in Hong Kong February 8, during his stay in

    Hong Kong" a ritish colony/ Rizal wrote a letter to 

    lumentritt" dated February 16, 1888, e#ressing his

    %itterness. $his letter runs as follows.

    In Hong Kong" Rizal stayed at 0ictoria Hotel. He waswelcomed %y ili#ino residents" including 2ose Maria

    asa" al%ino Mauricio" and Manuel 3riarte (son of

    rancisco 3riarte alcalde mayor of 4aguna).

     , +#aniard" 2ose +ains de 0aranda" who was a former

    secretary of governor general terrero shadowed of Rizal5s

    movement in Hong Kong. It is %elieved that he wascommissioned %y the +#anish authorities to s#y on Rizal.

    6Hong Kong"7 wrote Rizal to %lumentritt on e%ruary 1"

    1888"7is a small" %ut very clean city. Many 9ortuguese"

    Hindus" :nglish" *hinese" and 2ews live in it. $hese are

    some ili#inos" the ma;ority of whom %eing those who had

    %een eiled to the Marianas Island in 18!. $hey are #oor"gentle" and timid. ormerly they were rich mechanics"

    industrialist" and financiers.

    'ne of the ha##iest interludes in the life of Rizal was his

    +o;ourn in the land of cherry %lossoms for one month and

    a half (e%ruary 8 @ ,#ril 1-" 1888). He was enchanted

    %y the natural %eauty of 2a#an" the charming manners of

    the 2a#anese #eo#le" and the #ictures&ue shrines"

    moreover he fell in love with a 2a#anese girl" whose

    loveliness" infused ;oy and romance in his sorrowing heart.

    Her real name was +eio Asui. Rizal affectionately called

    her '

    +#anish legation. $he latter invited him to live at the

    +#anish legation.

    Rizal" %eing an intelligent man" realized that the

    +#anish di#lomatic authorities were instructed from manila

    to monitor his movement in ;a#an. He acce#ted the

    invitation for two reasons.

    1. He could economize his living e#enses %y staying

    at the legation and. He had nothing to hide from the #rying eyes of the

    +#anish authorities.

    'n &arh 7. Rizal checed out of $oyo hotel and

    lived at the +#anish legation. He and 9erez ca%allero

    %ecame good friends. In a latter to %lumentritt" he

    descri%ed the +#anish di#lomat as 6a young" fine" and

    ecellent writer7 and 6an a%le di#lomat who had traveled

    much7.

    =uring his first day in $oyo" Rizal was em%arrassed

    %ecause he did not now the 2a#anese language. He

    looed lie" 2a#anese" %ut could not tal 2a#anese. He

    had a hard time sho##ing" for he could not %e understood

    and the 2a#anese children laughed at him. $hus he wrote

    to %lumentritt"7here you have your friend" Rizal the wonder

    $o avoid further em%arrassment" Rizal decided to

    study the 2a#anese language. eing a %orn linguist" he

    was a%le. $o s#ea it within a few wee. He also studied

    the 2a#anese drama (a%ui)" arts" music" and ;udo

    (2a#anese art of self defense). He %rowsed in the

    museum" li%raries" ,rt galleries" and the charming villagesof ;a#an.

    #romenading in the street of the $oyo near the #ar. It

    %and #laying a classical wor of +trauss. He was

    im#ressed %y the su#er #erformances of the western

    music. He sto##ed and listened in the ra#t attention. He

    thought 6how admira%le was the rendition. I wonder how

    these 2a#anese #eo#le have assimilated the modern

    :uro#ean music to the etent of #laying the %eautiful

    musical master#iece of the great :uro#ean com#osers so

    $he %and sto##ed #laying. $he musicians descended from

    the hus%and and waled around for the rest. +ome %egan

    to converse. $o Rizal5s amazement" they were taling in

    $agalog. He a##roached them" in&uiring in $agalog.69isano taga saan #o ayoC7

    $he musicians were e&ually sur#rised and delighted to

    meet him. $hey told him they were #laying only the

    secondary instruments.

    'ne s#ring afternoon" a few days after he had moved

    to the +#anish legation in the aza%u district 'f $oyo" rizal

    saw a #retty 2a#anese girl waling #ast the legation gate"

    %eing a man with an eye for feminine %eauty" he meet her

    Rizal made an in&uires among the legation em#loyee

    and learned from one of them (a 2a#anese gardener) that

    she was +eio Asui" who lived in her #arents home and

    that she used to #ass %y the legation during her daily

    afternoon wal.

    $he following afternoon Rizal and the 2a#anese

    gardener waited at the legation gate and watched for the

    girl. ,s she a##roached" he too off his hat and #olitely

    introduced himself. ,s was the custom in Eermany. ,t that

    time Rizal5s 2a#anese was very #oor so that the gardener

    came to his aid and e#lained to the girl that the young

    man was a #hysician from manila who was a guest of the

    +#anish legation.

    +eio< san was mildly amused at the gallant gentlemen

    from the 9hili##ines who s#oe in halting 2a#anese. +he

    re#lied in :nglish for she new that language and also

    rench. $he two then conversed in %oth :nglish and

    rench< the language %arrier was thus eliminated.

    travel diary which contained his im#ression of Rizal as

    of the lower house of the first im#erial diet (2a#anese

    #arliament). here he carried on his flight for human

    raging. Rizal was sur#rised %ecause he new there

    was no cholera e#idemic at that time in the far east.

    He ;oined the other #assenger in #rotesting the

    un;ustifia%le action of the shi# a clean %ill health and

    the ritish governor of Hong Kong certified to the

    a%sence of cholera cases in china.

    He soon discovered that the #lacing of the shi#

    under &uarantine was motivated %y #olitics. $he shi#

    was carrying G- *hinese coolies. ,t that time #u%lic

    o#inions on #acific coast was against chea# coolie

    la%or %ecause the coolies from china were dis#lacing

    white la%orers in rail road construction cam#s. $o win

    the votes of the whites in *alifornia (for election was

    near) the administration im#eded the entry of *hinesecoolies.

    'n riday afternoon May ., 1888+the day he was

    #ermitted to go ashore Rizal registered at the #alace

    hotel" which was considered a first class hotel in the

    city. 'n this day" he wrote on his diary
