Chapter 3.3 Key concepts: Explain the difference between learned and innate behaviors Describe how behaviors help organisms survive Identify seasonal behaviors Key Vocabulary: Innate behaviors Learned behaviors Territory Hibernation Estivation Quick Write: What do you see? Behaviors: Behavior for animals include searching for food, attracting mates, etc. Learned vs. Innate: Innate: Inherited from genes (chewing, flying, crying, etc) Swimming at birth; walking Learned: Modified through learning and experience Language; dangerous situations When have you learned about adaptations? Behaviors are VITAL to survival! Adaptations help organisms survive! Survival behaviors: Finding food: Predator/prey relationships Finding food through hunting/gathering Marking Territory: Competition for space Territory: area that is occupied by one animal or by a group of animals that dont allow other members to enter Why do animals do this? Mating, protecting young, finding food How do animals do this? How do some animals mark territory? Survival behaviors: Defensive behaviors: Protect resources from other animals What do you know about this? Rabbits dont move and blend in (protection from predators) Survival skills Courtship/Parenting Organism have to reproduce Courtship How do animals do this? How do some animals mark territory? Birds of paradise Seasonal Behaviors: Migration: travel from one space to the next Why? Hibernation/Estivation: period of inactivity and decreased in body temperature Why do this? Biological Clock: internal control natural cycles (day time; sleep) Cycle of change: Reproduction; migration; hibernation; metamorphosis The change in the inherited characteristics of a population over time that BENEFITS the organism What adaptations needed? What about a desert? Review: Homework: Comics due tomorrow!
