2017 Chapter U Couple of the Year Mike & Jinger Kaufman
2017 Chapter U Individual of the Year Tom Hampshire
Hello Chapter U,
We are into July already. We have seen the parades and
the fireworks for the 4th.
We hope everyone has had a lot of riding so far, this year.
The weather has been nice this summer.
By now I am sure most of the Chapter knows that this
spring Harriet and I ran over a deer on the bike, as it
came out from under the car in front of us. At least we didn’t go down. I am sure some are
wondering why we are still riding.
Believe me after hitting the deer last year and going down for the second time in five months we
did some thinking about it. Then when we hit the deer this spring the feelings came back in
spades. When we arrived at Spring Wing we did some talking about riding. We decided no
matter how we felt about riding we needed to ride home that day. Once home I did some real
soul searching for the reason I like to ride so much. It took a while, but I came to the conclusion
that I ride because I am out in the open with all of the experiences. The heat, the cold, the way
the sun warms you up on a cold day, the rain, the hail, and the snow. Unlike riding in a car or
truck, you get all of the smells, the dirt that comes up from the vehicles around us, and what the
wind picks up from the fields. The feeling I get when I crest a hill and I have an unobstructed view
of the road and the world not just ahead of me but the panoramic view all around me. How
many people do you know who can say that they were passed by a livestock hauler, in a heavy
rain with the spray covering you. I have, but the rain was coming down heavy enough and I had
all of the gear on, so I was rinsed off well as I rode down the road. I did figure out soon enough
that it would be a good idea to keep my mouth shut as the truck went by.
Harriet here—I can safely say I feel lucky to have avoided the livestock hauler! But the reason I
still ride is because it is the greatest activity we do together. I won’t lie that it was difficult to get
back on the bike after the deer incident but it gets easier. Jay may enjoy some of the elements
more than me but it is all good. There are many other experiences that have feeling attached to
them to make it worth the risk, for me to keep riding.
Now, to remind everyone, the Hog Roast will be on August 5th. Don’t forget to bring a dish to
pass, if unsure of what to bring Harriet can let you know what is needed. Also, don’t forget an
item for the silent auction.
Some are going to breakfast before going to set up for the Hog Roast. If you want to go to
breakfast Marc Nelson is setting that up so contact him for information.
Region D/ Michigan Rally will be from 8/10 through 8/12, it is being held in Evart, MI.
Wing Ding will be held 8/29‐ 9/2, in Grapevine TX.
Remember to get the most out of Chapter life you need to PARTICAPATE, PARTICAPATE,
PARTICAPATE, good riding

FRIENDS FOR FUN, SAFETY & KNOWLEDGE
Hello Chapter U,
Your ACD’s Mike and Jinger
I hope us all been out enjoying the nice weather. To me
this means out shining my bike and chauffeuring Jinger on
rides.
Oh man, we have had some fun this past month! It
started out with a Breakfast Ride to Maria’s and then we
went to the Hayden’s Vintage Bike Show in Kendallville,
where we had our annual hot dog sale fundraiser. There sure were a lot of nice bikes to see
and even reminisce about. We would like to thank all who were able to come out to help and
support the Chapter that day. Then that evening some of our Members and a few from Chapter
D2 enjoyed a great evening of baseball and fellowship at the Tin Caps Game in Ft. Wayne.
Later in the month Jay and Harriet led a dinner ride to Red Pig Inn over in Ottawa Ohio. Four
couples could make that ride. Awesome food as usual, and another as usual, was the rain on
the ride home.
Because the Gathering was after the first Saturday of the month we had another Breakfast Ride.
That ride was led by John and JoAnn Taylor. There was a group of 14 who followed them to
Montpelier Ohio, where you can still get a great cup of coffee for .25¢.
It was so nice to see Members who can’t always make it to our Gatherings this month, I hope we
get to see you more often.
Well, until next time, ride safe! And have fun! And use your sun screen!
