Wow what agreat spring forthe Charolaisbreed and whatwill the future

look like. We saw some new buyers inthe market and some that have triedCharolais before expand the numbersthey are using. When you have theorder buyers and feedlot operatorsusing more Charolais bulls on theirown cows, with many of them beingblacks, you know the producers theybuy calves from are going to get themessage of what they should be using.JGL Livestock, which is one of thepremier order buying firms in NorthAmerica, bought over 40 Charolaisbulls this spring to put on a portion oftheir many thousand cows. KirkSinclair, owner of Prairie Livestock atMoosomin, Saskatchewan, addedanother 40 Charolais bulls to his bullbattery to go on mainly black cows.Highway 21 Feeders out of Albertaincreased their Charolais bulls in their250 head bull battery and there weremore stories of producers addingCharolais bulls to their black cows.

We have to resell the idea ofcrossbreeding and the advantages ofit. I asked one cattleman who wasswitching and his main goal was toincrease weaning weights. We knowthe Charolais bull will calve and thehybrid vigor should look after therest. Another producer who haspredominately straight bred Simmentalwas impressed with the calving easeand vigor at birth of his Charcrosscalves. There are so many advantagesto crossbreeding that we need to tell.

It was an interesting time thisspring bull sale run. There were someincredible positives in the Charolaismarket and a few softer sales that arehard to explain. The sales started offstrong and for the most part were that

way, although the later sales in theseason which historically see astrengthening in prices saw somepressures. I had one breeder fromOntario email me this question andhave printed my response, which I thinksums up the last half of the bull sales.

What is your sense for the salesbeing softer this year, when peopleare getting more for their stockersthan they have for a long time?

This spring the stocker market wasdropping the further we went alongas the high cost of feed kept thefeedlots losing money. The fat cattlemarket should be better than it is butthe US economy has put a cap on thatas well. There is also the fear of theunknown with the new proposedmCOOL changes the US have putforward. This doesn’t look positive forCanadian fat cattle going to beharvested across the line.

I know out here, guys were justgetting grumpy with the long, hardwinter and attitude is very importantcome sale day. Like in many areas, thefeed stacks were going down and theprice was going up and guys werestarting to count pennies to buy hay.

I also think that last year we sold alot of bulls and there are a lot ofyoung bulls in the industry and fewercows. Not that it affected Charolais, but there are less commercial heifersbeing bred this spring so not as manyheifer bulls were sold.

I am writing this on April 30th inRegina and woke up this morningwith a bit of a blizzard with highwinds and 3 to 4 inches of snow. Thewhole spring has been challenging foreveryone. There were not many saledays across the country that didn’thave some weather issues, be it snow, freezing rain, bad roads or belownormal frigid temperatures, and I

think this contributed to some salesthat weren’t quite as good asanticipated. I think many commercialproducers hadn’t realized it wasspring and they needed to buy bulls. Many have not semen tested yet sothere will be some market still outthere between now and grass time. Many sales offered increased numbersafter last year’s strong sale butprobably holding the numbers steadywould have been more in tune withthe market, as evidenced at the end ofthe season.

There will be some higher calflosses this spring as well, as manyproducers weren’t equipped to handlethe colder than normal weather whenthey started calving. Some have jokedthat there will be two sorts this fallselling calves – with and without ears.

We would like to welcome the newGeneral Manager of the CanadianCharolais Association, Kelly Carson, who introduces himself in this issue, and thank the board of directors andoffice staff who have put in extra timein the last six months keeping thingscaught up. It is always interestingwhen fresh eyes come into anorganization and relook at how andwhy we do things.

There are a number of provincialassociation events taking place thissummer and I would encourageeveryone to attend as many withinand outside their province as possible. For example the SaskatchewanAssociation is celebrating 50 years inconjunction with the CCA AGM.Manitoba is having a picnic and cattledisplay the end of June in Miami andof course Ontario is hosting the CCYAConference and Show in Shelburne.

See you down the Charolais trail.Until next time,Helge

Charolais Banner • May 2013 9

Hello! It is my great pleasure tointroduce myself to you. My name isKelly Carson and I am the new General Manager of the CanadianCharolais Association.

I was born and raised on the familyfarm in northern Saskatchewan andwhile I was growing up, my familyworked a mixed farming operation;that is where my love of cattle wasnurtured. As a result, my career hasevolved through various agricultureand business experiences over the past25+ years.

I am certainly looking forward totaking on my role with the CharolaisAssociation and to work with a breedthat has put its share of money into mypockets over the years. Having workedat 27,000 and 35,000 head feedlots Iknow which breeds of cattle makemoney and which don’t. I haveparticipated in many trials on Charolaisand Charolais‐influenced cattle and Iknow first‐hand that the Charolais breed succeeds.

My role as the General Manager willbe to support the Board of Directorsand Officers of the CharolaisAssociation. I am committed toworking with all of the Associationmembers to help grow the breed evenfurther and to help bring the Charolaisinfluence to even greater heights. Onbehalf of the Association, I amcommitted to representing the bestinterests of our members on everythingcattle‐related throughout Canada and Ilook forward to spending time gettingto know the members on their farms. As your General Manager, I want tohear your opinions and commentswhenever you have something on yourmind. I will answer my phone when it

rings and I will respond to all emails. This country was built on the backs

of our family‐run farms and it willcontinue to move forward in thatmanner. That is why I feel it is sovitally important to have extremelystrong relationships with all levels ofgovernment because we need to useour voice and have it heard. I want to work with industry partners to grow the beef business because that isjust the right thing to do. My dadtaught me many years ago and in hiswords, it’s always best to “just do theright thing.”

On the personal side, my wife,Tracey, and I live in Cochrane, Alberta, with our two loyal four‐leggedcompanions, Maggie & Shiloh. Weenjoy many outdoor pursuits includingcamping, golf, hiking, mountain bikingand various other sports. We also loveto travel and are particularly drawn towarm, sunny locales. It has been saidthat behind every successful man is aloving, supportive woman; in my case Iam fortunate to have a partner who hasalways stood right by my side.

In closing, I look forward to workingwith the Board, Officers and staff of theCanadian Charolais Association, whoin the end all work for, and in the bestinterests of, the membership. I have asaying that I use from time to time;someone can tell you they’ve donethings but if you can’t see the endresult, you may question if those thingswere done in the first place. The way Ilook at it, if I say I’m going to go andpound fence posts, at the end of theday, anyone can go count them. So, Iam now off to pound some posts.

Take care,Kelly Carson

HERD HEALTH

Much has beenwritten about the

classic lead poisonings we see whencattle consume lead plates frombroken down batteries. There aremany other causes of poisonings incattle at pasture many of which causedeath and which there is no antidote. We must prevent these wheneverpossible. I have personally seen someof these and will go over areas wherethey are encountered and stress whypastures need a quick check over eachspring before cattle are released.

There was a recent veterinary reportby Drs. Barry Blakely, Lorrie Fraserand Cheryl Waldner on poisoning by Sodium Chlorate, a herbicide andtype of soil sterilant. Because it hassodium in it there is a salty tastewhich attracts cattle. Our practice also experienced this same poisoningseveral years ago where a producerlost over ten cows when some Sodium Chlorate had been left on apasture. The cattle gained accesswhen they were turned out in thespring. This case went to court but thejudge ruled the producer was at faultfor not checking the pasture before thecattle were released and was as muchto blame as the person that had leftthe product!

Cattle are inquisitive and are notfussy eaters so will nibble at mostthings. The products like sodiumchlorate and battery plates which arealso salty are especially hazardous. My best advice is when checkingpastures pay close attention to threemain areas. One is fence linesespecially along roadsides. Productscan be thrown out of vehicles and getonto your pastures. We have knownabout batteries for a long time butmany more are now used for electricfencers and solar water pumps. Don’tleave these when they no longer

retain charge. Remove them and havethem properly recycled. Your problemtypically will not be right away butafter several years when the batteriescrack, break open and expose theextremely toxic lead plates. Afterseveral years of overgrowth thesebatteries become extremely hard to find.

The second hazardous area is oldgarbage dumps and burrow pits. Mostold farms had an area where oldequipment metal and othermiscellaneous garbage was left todecompose or was burned. Checkthese areas closely every spring andfence them off if possible. Weatheringand the freeze thaw cycle may exposehazardous products that were buriedlong ago. Have a check through theseareas both at spring turnout and latein the fall when pastures are short. This is when cattle searching moreforage will start to root in bush areas.Calves are very inquisitive and oftenwill be the first to consume theseproducts and show clinical signs. Also because of their smaller sizeneed a much lower dose to developclinical signs.

The third and most common sourceof poisonings is around abandonedyard sites or abandoned vehicles. Most old yard sites on the prairies areleft perhaps because of a sense ofnostalgia history and preserving ourheritage so they are never properlycleaned up. Doors breakdown orother openings are created for accessto buildings. Cattle will explore theseareas and old garages especially couldcontain several old products whichcould be very harmful to cattle. Yearsago all the paints were lead based andthere were much less controls onherbicides insecticides cleansers andthe like. Containers or bags slowlybreakdown over time. These oldgarages have kept the elements like

rain or snow from breaking down theproducts. While these old archivedsites may contain some treasures likestashes of money they may alsocontain very harmful products foryour livestock. Check them out.

Any time you rent or take over newpasture be sure and ask the owner ifthere are any old yard sites, dumpareas, or other places the public hasaccess too. The yard sites may besecluded in the bush and hard to find.Other questions asked may be has anystuff been hauled in like fill dirt orother products from industrial sites.Has their been any gas or oil activitywhere lots of people, equipment andproducts have accessed the land.

Check your own premises closelythis spring before turnout. Anespecially good time is when checkingand repairing fences. Properly removeand recycle old batteries and anyother toxic chemicals not in use. Evenif livestock recover from toxicingestion with products such as leadthere is also the age old questionwhen would the milk or meat be fit tobe consumed? These variouscompounds can often causepermanent internal organ damageresulting in poor doing unproductiveanimals in the future as well. Some ofthe insecticides there may be anantidote for but that is if they arefounds in time and that rarely is thecase as most of these poisonings occur at pasture in the spring or fallwhen cattle are not being observed as closely.

Be diligent, check this spring andlet’s try to avoid the panic call ofseveral dead cattle being found. Thisis especially traumatic when it ispreventable. This is true to the saying,an ounce of prevention is worth apound of cure. Happy grazing.

Closely Check Pastures at Turnoutfor Potential Poisonings
