January 2011 . . . in the books. We have no sooner started a New Year and we are already one month down. So here is the big question: did it count? You will never have January 2011 again. So,

did it count? Let me explain. I find 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 one of the most interesting and challenging passages in the Bible. It is a passage to believers about building a life. We know it is a passage to believers because they have laid the right foundation of Jesus Christ (vv.10-11). You are not building until you have a life in Christ. In other words, no matter what you do, your life counts for nothing if you do not have the foundation of Christ. Now once you have that foundation, you can begin building a life that counts for something, that will be rewarded in eternity.

So we have a life in Christ. I have had one since 1982, so I have been building for 29 years. How about you? The Bible says when we get to heaven our life will be put into the refining fire. I imagine my life going into like pizza oven on one of those big pizza spatulas. While in the oven the fire burns off everything that is sin. It burns off good things that were done with the wrong motives. The fire then refines and purifies the good things done in right motives. That is what comes back out of the fire and what comes out is the basis of our reward.

Put January 2011 into the refining fire. What would come out? What would be the basis of the reward? The refining fire is truth and going to be one of the great moments in our life, but it is hard to live by this. In some ways, while it is truth, it does not seem real to us. We don’t make many decisions in light of the refining fire, but wouldn’t that be the smart thing to do. What decisions do you need to make with your money so that it comes out of the fire and lasts for eternity? What decisions do you need to make with your relationships so that they count for eternity? Do you need to give witness to the gospel? Do you need to forgive or ask for forgiveness? How about your time? Are you doing things that count for eternity? I can’t help but imagine when that big spatula comes out of the fire that we aren’t going to wish we had thought a little more about this. Look at verse 15 – this is the only place I know of in heaven where there is regret and loss.

God’s word is eternal. The church is eternal. Human souls are eternal – the question is where in eternity will they be? The Bible also says money can be eternal. We are going to be looking at all of this later in February to make sure we are building a life that counts. Let’s be wise and courageous and start making some decisions today in light of the eternity we want.

I pray you have had a great start to the year, and the Lord’s blessing and favor is on your life.

Your pastor,

Randy Hahn

FAITH: The Great AdventureAt Colonial Heights Baptist our mission is to Impact The World For Christ and a big part of that is to make disciples for Jesus Christ. One way we do that is to try to go back to every visitor that comes through our doors, telling them we are glad they visited, that they are welcome, and that God loves them. Many times we find people who are searching for acceptance, inclusion, a place to worship, and for Christ to fill an emptiness they can't explain.

FAITH is a course taught every spring and fall that provides training and experience in sharing the Gospel. This "Great Adventure" will change your life, giving you the knowledge and boldness to witness, answering God's direction to "go and make disciples." (Matt 28:19)

The next semester will start on February 23. For details contact Jim Reeves at the church office, 804.526.0424 or [email protected].

About the Connection:In order to keep our members and guests more informed with up-to-date information about our programs and events, we’ve switched to a monthly Connection magazine that will be available in the Concourse rather than mailed to each home. We encourage you to pick up a copy at the kiosks located at the North and South entrances on the last Sunday of the month.

Coming out of our Global Impact Conference in October there was an

excitement and an eagerness for many of our folks to get involved in Missions, whether it be overseas, here in the U.S., or in our local community. Our annual Harding Street Christmas Outreach provided many in our congregation with an opportunity to put a face on missions as we had a chance to be His witness in our “Jerusalem”. (Acts 1:8b)

Two weeks before Christmas we set out to provide a home-cooked Christmas dinner to the residents living on or around the Harding Street area of Petersburg. Although we have done this event there for many years, this one was a little different. This year over half of the volunteers from Colonial Heights Baptist were doing so for the first time. Most did not know what to expect; they were simply going because they wanted to impact their community for Christ. There were close to 200 from our church in attendance and they came to work and to serve. Some came early and set up tables and chairs. Others set up music equipment, cooked and delivered food to the church, and dozens served food, taught children, and greeted those in attendance.

After singing Christmas carols and hearing “O Holy Night”, there was a very special testimony from a lady, who just a year before, was addicted to crack cocaine and her life was in shambles. Her testimony, coupled with a Gospel presentation and invitation, led several to come forward to accept Christ as their personal Lord and Savior.

As we packed up and left the community center, we realized that the event was more than a Christmas meal and entertainment; we had done what God had commanded us. We were obedient to His Word. We are able to say that we know what Missions is. It is not some abstract term that we use during a mission conference but it is an action word that we live out to impact our world for Christ.

One of the goals of the Global Impact Conference (GIC) and our missions philosophy is to personalize missions to every individual in our

church. By personalizing, I mean that every person can put a name, face, or experience to missions. The GIC gives us a unique opportunity to do this on a global scale by bringing missionaries and ministries from around the world right here to our church. This year we were very surprised to have a ministry and a couple that connected with nearly every group or individual they came in contact with. Wallace and Kim Nix, from South Carolina, began Chosen Children Ministries in Nicaragua several years ago. During the GIC they shared their testimony of how God had called and is using them, normal everyday people, to serve Him in great and mighty ways. As they shared their story with individuals, Bible Fellowship classes and groups through out the GIC, an interest began swelling in the hearts and minds of many here at CH Baptist. And because of this interest, although it was not the express purpose or goal of the GIC to do this, we will be sending a team down to Nicaragua to work with the Nixes in May. There are always individuals that connect with a missionary that shares with their class during the GIC and that is always great, but to have a ministry have such an widespread impact among our people is not the norm. We will have a team ready to head to this Central American country to do construction, distribute food and work with children in the city and orphanages this May. Chosen Children Ministries specializes in hosting church groups to minister in Nicaragua. We are excited to see this opportunity become reality for our church. Please be in prayer for this trip and God’s direction and purpose for this missions opportunity.

During each issue of the Connection we like to highlight some of our many dedicated volunteers. Our spotlighted volunteers for the February issue are Newell and Sue Pell, who volunteer in the Bible Fellowship department.

Newell and Sue Pell have been members of the church for 5 years. They have a son, Jeffrey, and daughter-in-law, Suzanne, and two granddaughters, McKenzie and Lexie. Sue got involved in the Bible Fellowship ministry because her sister and cousin were already helping Ronnie West with attendance on Sundays and she was familiar with spreadsheets. Newell got involved to help Sue.

For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the member of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many.

I Corinthians 12:12-14

When we become a Christian, God gives us salvation and the hope of eternity in heaven. He has given each of us the opportunity to serve others and make a real difference in our community. God didn’t design ministry for just a few people, but for every member of our church. We all have been given a gift to serve.

After the first of the year, it seems like people are so exhausted from the end of the year hustle and bustle that they want to just sit and relax. While that could be enjoyable, that is not what we are called to do. The Lord is moving here and has not taken a sabbatical for the winter months. Should we?

One of our volunteer teams has a place for you. Your gifts and talents are needed in many areas. Stop by the Information Center and pick up a volunteer manual containing a list of the opportunities available.
