INTRODUCTION –Basic facts on Chemistry in the Music Industry and Manufactur ing of Batter ies.

Chemistry in Music : Guitars, CD’s and High – endStereo Systems

Have you ever considered that Chemistry pervades our lives every dayin such ways that sometimes might shock everyone! Music, you may

think physics has something to do with it but chemistry? In facechemistry plays an important role within the music industry. Forinstance do you think chemistry has anything to do with the soundof a guitar? Oh yes it does! Basically the sound of a guitar string depends ona steel core and the thicker strings are also wound with nickel, there is alsousually a coating on the strings to improve tone.

A cd or compact discs are made up of poly vinyl chloride that is synthetic plastic

polymer. It is prepared by the free radical polymerization of vinyl chloride. While liquidmagnets such as “f errofluids are used in high-end speakers and in the laser headsof some CD and DVD players. They are used in low friction seals for rotatingshaft motors and computer disk drive seals.” 1

Chemistry in Manufactur ing : Batter ies

Chemistry has played a big role in manufacturing. But manufacturing is a very broad topic and thus I decided to specify to the manufacturing of batteries. I also choose batteries because it still has some connection towards the music industry. Becausewithout batteries then devices such as laptop and iPods wouldn’t be able to work

thus music wouldn’t be able to be shared internationally. But if were talking about  the big picture of the usage of batteries then we would be talking about forinstance cars, something that we couldn’t live without.

In scientific term “an electrical battery is one or more electrochemical cells that convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy.” 2 But different types of electronic devices have different types of batteries. Usually it’s between Zinc-carbon

battery, Alkaline battery, Lithium-ion battery (rechargeable) or Lead-acid battery(rechargeable).

The way that a battery is manufactured depends on whether it is a Zinc-carbon battery, Alkaline battery, Lithium-ion battery (rechargeable) or Lead-acid battery(rechargeable). But here is a diagram of how a Lithium-ion battery (for a car) ismade.

The Debate: Benef its and Limitat ions of the issueand how it is appl ied to the fol lowing sectors.

Socia l :Socially music has been a method for people to express their emotions and voice,or to be able to let out their feelings that they've been bottling up, at times even

to help people who have emotional issues and even a way for people tocommunicate. Without this method for people to expose their inner true emotions

it would lead to a society full of people who are either depressed or emotionallyunstable. Instruments such as guitars play a role in this as it helps people inmaking music, but without this instrument it would be hard for people to makeany music.

Almost everyone has a cellphone, isn’t that correct? And guess what keeps acellphone running for hours and hours, why yes it’s the batteries. Socially it means

that we are able to communicate with each other easily unlike using mail and so on. However cellphone batteries are known to pollute the environment also thecellphone itself is can cause health issues.

Economic :The music industry has been a way for certain

countries to be “promoted” meaning that  through these artists the country’s culture becomes more publicized ergo making theirproducts more demandable. For instance “K-pop”

because of K-pop artists such as Girls’

Generation, Super Junior and so on. Koreahas become a very noticeable country leading

to a “Korean wave” or Hallyu wave and their

A chart of exports of Korean cultural products

that rose because of the “Korean Wave”http://asadalthought.wordpress.com/category/korean-wave/

products such as the artists own official merchandise (usually made in Korea),Korean traditional food for instance Kimchi and even cosmetics from brands suchas Etude and Faceshop become very in demand overseas. Ergo the more they

export they more income they get. Without CD’s and DVD’s or even laptops musicwouldn’t be able to pass internationally and therefore the economy of certaincountries that are greatly promoted through these “artists” would plummet.

Yet if we let this be then that certain countries might be too dependent with theirentertainment industry and for instance if their artists aren’t popular anymore the

demand of their products would drop and they wouldn’t have any idea on what to

do so that their export rate would be like before. Also there are times where theartists don’t get the money that they deserve because CD’s can be pirated, andmay lead to other problems.

Pol it ica l :As I’ve said before music has been one of the ways for people to give out a say

on the worlds current situation. For instance there have been artists that havepromoted political issues through songs such as the Black Eyed Peas with thesong Where is the love? “In this anti-war pacifist anthem, The Black Eyed Peaslament on various worldwide problems. Many issues are discussed, which include but are not limited to terrorism, U.S. government hypocrisy, racism, war, intolerance, and greed.” 3

Again the only way for this song could be internationally known is through CD’s, the Internet (meaning by using a laptop or PC) and etc. Without that we wouldn’t  be able to know about these types of songs and peoples perspectives of theseissues. But really who watches the news these days? I bet not a lot of people. With this we would also have another way to find out about worldwide issues.

However there are times where these types of songs where these messages cancreate more political problems.

Environmental :Batteries are very important for electronic devices but are they recyclable? In the

beginning batteries weren’t rechargeable and thus it created some issues. Howevernow there are rechargeable batteries that have a longer lifespan compared to theusual battery. Meaning that we are able to at least have time to recycle a hugepercentage of the waste if most of us use more rechargeable batteries compared

 to the normal “un-rechargeable” batteries.

Cultural : Every country has their own culture or identity and at times these types of cultures are saved and passed on through songs (meaning the music is recorded)and / or photography (meaning using a camera ergo using a battery). Without thesewe might as well loose part of our heritage at some point. As with photos wewould have a visual image of our culture whilst with recorded songs we would have

some sort audio image.

Conclusion:Basically chemistry is useful and it’s in things that we use

everyday even if we don’t notice it! Without chemistry, whoknows what the world would become as from being in stuff we use everyday such as laptops to even guitars, chemistryis always playing a driving role in it. Yet even though there are

benefits and downsides to it, chemistry will always be

something important in our lives.
