Let’s Meet

Get together in groups of 3 or 4 people and introduce yourself:

Tell the people in your group 3 things you think they should know about you.

Discuss, as a group, whether you like/dislike working in the lab.

The person that was born the farthest from this lab should be ready to introduce

her/himself and the rest of the people in their group.

Informed Consent

Your section of CHEM 151 has been selected to pilot test a new curriculum approach. In

order to evaluate the success of the project, your activities in lab and lecture may be observed on a regular basis by people

associated with the project.

We ask you that you consent to participate in this project

(observations, and voluntary focus groups and interviews).

To help us craft the best possible class for your needs we need determine what you

know about basic Chemistry.

To this end is that we have asked you to complete a diagnostic assessment ( in D2L).

Did you do it?

What Do You Know?

You have until Friday at 11 PM to complete it!

Lab Safety

Chapter ONE in the lab manual.

It is expected that you will

1) Learn how to be safe in a chemical lab (what you know);

2) Develop (and demonstrate) safe laboratory habits (what you do).

You will be evaluated on the quality of your laboratory habits and practices over the

course of the semester.

The Safety AgreementYou must agree to abide by our rules and regulations before we will allow you to work

in our labs.COMPLETE THE SAFETY AGREEMENT

BEFORE FRIDAY AT 11 PM (in D2L).

Let’s take a safety tour of our

Lab!

In this lab, you will be using a variety of

chemical substances.

For your own safety, YOU MUST recognize

and name them based on their

chemical formulas.

systematic name

Why?

The following compounds are called “BINARY COMPOUNDS”

because their formula include two different elements

HBr HCl HI H2S CO CO2 CBr4

N2O N2O4 N2O5 PCl3 PCl5 SF6

Some Trends

Non-Metals

What do these compounds

have in common?

Let’s look for a trend or system in naming binary molecular compounds:

Some Trends

Formula Name

CO carbon monoxide

CO2 carbon dioxide

CBr4 carbon tetrabromide

N2O dinitrogen monoxide

N2O4 dinitrogen tetroxide

N2O5 dinitrogen pentoxide

PCl3 phosphorus trichloride

SF6 sulfur hexafluoride

What are the rules for naming these

molecularcompounds? Can you see the pattern?

Page 20: Chemistry XXI 1 Working in the CHEM 151 lab. Lab Session 1

I

1. The name of the element with the lower group number (furthest to the left) in the periodic table is the first word in the name (CO, carbon ….)

2. If in the same group, the one with the higher period number (furthest down) goes first (SO2, sulfur…).

3. The second element is named with the root and the suffix –ide (CS2, carbon disulfide).

4. Use Greek numeral prefixes to indicate the number of atoms of each element (use in first word only if more than one atom) (CS2, carbon disulfide, CO, carbon monoxide, N2O2, dinitrogen dioxide)

Getting Ready

For our next session you need to: Complete the 4 PRE-TERM QUIZZES in D2L (NO LATER THAN FRIDAY AT 11 PM) ; Complete the post-lab quiz (IBIS);

(OPENS FRIDAY & ENDS SUNDAY 11 PM) Complete the pre-lab assignment (posted in D2L) Print out a report form (D2L) and bring it to lab. Bring at least one laptop with Excel in it per team.

Imagine that you are employed by a recycling firm.

You have been assigned to devise a quick and cheap method for identifying

different types of plastics.

The Challenge

What would you propose to do?

What questions do you need to answer to complete your task?

Write your ideas in your notebook before you come to lab.
