Page 2: Chendra was accepted and lovingly raised - Welcome to … was accepted and lovingly raised by our herd of Asian Elephants. She became (and still remains!) the only Borneo Pygmy elephant

Her entire herd scattered when the palm oil plantation worker shot his gun to stop them from eating the tasty palm trees.

After getting hit in the eye, Chendra runs until she can’t run anymore. Now, terrified and alone, lost in the forest, she has no idea how to find food or water.

They give her food and water. They keep her safe. Her basic needs are taken care of.

Chendra doesn’t know where her mom is.

She wants her mom and her herd. She desperately needs a family to learn

from and grow with.

Some friendly people come to help Chendra.

But, Chendra seems sad and lonely.

Page 3: Chendra was accepted and lovingly raised - Welcome to … was accepted and lovingly raised by our herd of Asian Elephants. She became (and still remains!) the only Borneo Pygmy elephant

Chendra was accepted and lovingly raised by our herd of Asian Elephants.

She became (and still remains!) the only Borneo Pygmy elephant living in North America.

Today, Chendra and the rest of the herd spend all day exploring their Elephant Lands! There’s so much more space

to roam around in, and lots of interesting things to do.Here’s where you come in!

No waiting around for the keeper at feeding time! Timed feeder stations scattered around the habitat ensure the herd roams in search of food – just as they would in the wild.

Timed feeders are set to drop hay at different times throughout the day.

Elephants check the feeders and pull hay out the bottom grate.

Page 4: Chendra was accepted and lovingly raised - Welcome to … was accepted and lovingly raised by our herd of Asian Elephants. She became (and still remains!) the only Borneo Pygmy elephant

How do you safely introduce a 10,000 lb elephant to the herd? Slowly! Our new “Howdy” system helps the animals to safely interact with each other without conflict.

Now, almost 20 years later, “Auntie Chendra” is a thriving and active member of the herd. She dotes on the little ones, playing in the pool with young Samudra and taking mud baths with little Lily.

High feeder baskets located throughout Elephant Lands encourage Chendra and the other elephants to get up on their hind legs and exercise those muscles.

Or, they might bend down to look in strategically placed hollow logs for something to munch on.

Keepers use the water cannon to create a more enriching (and fun!) environment for the elephants. Chendra and Lily love to roll in the mud!

Thanks to donors like you.

And, because of everything we’ve learned about Chendra and her herd, we can help create a brighter future for other Malaysian palm oil plantation orphans like her.

Sam and Chendra play in the pool.

Kneeling to search hollowed out logs.

Page 5: Chendra was accepted and lovingly raised - Welcome to … was accepted and lovingly raised by our herd of Asian Elephants. She became (and still remains!) the only Borneo Pygmy elephant

Chendra is a palm oil plantation orphan – and she’s not alone.

The Malaysian palm oil industry is growing and with it comes increased human/elephant conflict. Wildlife rescue organizations in Malaysia are seeing an increase in the number of orphaned elephants. They need greater support and resources to give these big babies the best possible care!

With your support of the endowment, we’re giving these orphaned elephants

a brighter future! The Oregon Zoo has over 50 years of experience caring

for Asian Elephants along with scientific research to draw from. We’re

learning more all the time by partnering with Sabah Wildlife Rescue Unit

and HUTAN, both located in Borneo, Malaysia.

Here’s what this $1 million endowment will fund this year:

- Fund two full time dedicated elephant keepers at the Sabah Wildlife

Rescue Unit, plus a training workshop.- Staff from Malaysia will come to our Zoo and learn from our

elephant experts.- Our Zoo staff will travel to Malaysia to observe and make

recommendations on how to improve care.

PLUS: a group of Oregon Zoo staff have created a field guide to help

educate palm oil workers and other Malaysians on elephant behavior and

safety. The goal is to reduce human/elephant conflict.

The GOOD NEWS: much of what we’re doing to advance elephant

conservation can be applied to other animals here in the Pacific Northwest

and around the world. Together we can help reduce the impact of

deforestation, climate change and increased conflict with humans.

You’ve watched Chendra and the rest of our Asian elephant herd

live and grow together as a family. Throughout it all, you’ve been

a steadfast friend to these elephants. In fact, just as Chendra was

welcomed as a member of our herd, you’ve become a member of

our zoo family too.

Our Asian elephant story is just one example of how your

membership and support of the Oregon Zoo helps all of our

animals – here at the zoo as well as in nature. From condors to

polar bears, pygmy rabbits to rhinos, primates, butterflies and

turtles. You support our threefold mission to advance education,

conservation and animal welfare.

I look forward to the coming year with excitement and

anticipation! Just as our elephant habitat was completely

transformed to better suit our herd, soon the polar bear, primate

and rhino habitats will undergo similar transformations.

Our animals depend on YOU, your membership, and your

support of our zoo. Together we are inspiring people to take

action on behalf of wildlife here in the Pacific Northwest and

all around the world.

Thank you for being a part of our family!

Yours in gratitude,

Julie Fitzgerald
