REMINDERS

Please remember to bring your fat quarter to leave in a box set up at the back. They will be given to Cheryl Czaplinski as ‘thank you’ gifts for an outstanding job as president of the guild for the past two years.

******************

Don’t forget to bring your ‘saleables’ and/or your cash for the June trunk sale at our next meeting. Some of our previous ‘vendors’ have done quite well, and the rest of us have purchased some wonderful bargains.

******************

Those with luncheon tickets, please remember to bring your plate, cutlery and cup/mug.

THANK YOU!

A huge thanks to all who helped us on the program and workshop committees with ideas and feedback over the past two years. It has been fun, educational and very satisfying. Remember to forward your suggestions to the incoming committee as well. They will appreciate it!

***************

Thanks to Joyce Armstrong for sharing her famous « scrappy quilt » pattern at the Wednesday afternoon workshop. We all enjoyed sewing our 2 1/2’’ x 4 1/2 ’’ rectangles into blocks, and coming up with a really neat quilt top. (It’s addictive!) A great pattern for all those scraps that seem to multiply more/worse? than rabbits.

May’s Workshop & Guest Speaker

May’s guest speaker, Helen Fujiki shared her talent and technique with a full house of workshop participants on Tuesday, May 4. We were all intrigued by the Japanese style and had a better understanding of it with the help of a very capable teacher. A fun workshop with lots of room for creativity. ‘‘Japan Through the Eyes of a Quilter’’ was the topic of Helen’s presentation at our May 5th meeting. Helen spoke to a packed house, with many of her beautiful quilts on display. Check out Helen’s websites at http://www.fujiwaquilting.com or http://www.helenfujiki.com

* For those of you who were unable to attend her workshop in May, Helen Fujiki will be back Tuesday, Sept. 7th to do a machine quilting workshop. Sign up and details will be available from Helen Blaskievich at the June meeting.*

A ‘Q-Tip (Quilt Tip)

The Topstitch Needle is the same as a metallic or metafil needle… so no need to buy both varieties. It has a large, smooth eye and a large groove called the scarf into which the thread fits and is protected from rubbing as it goes through the fabric. Good for any kind of sewing, not just quilting by machine.

To keep your work from bunching up (in the back when machine quilting, place masking tape from corner to corner diagonally then baste along the line. Repeat from other corner to corner. You have now taken care of the bias and any bunching problems.

Thanks ladies for the contributions!

Thanks Helen Blaskievich for the word ‘Q-Tip’ Love it! Will be using it to headline Tips!

‘Mom’s Apron’ Ruth Hunter

Ruth and I are trying to make the apron pattern available to everyone who wants it. I am not able to down-size it to an 8 x 11 page on my scanner, but I’ve drawn up a likeness, which of course is not to size. However I have taken many measurements. I am going to show Ruth what I’ve done and if she thinks it’ll be possible for everyone to draw up the pattern to the measurements I give, the ‘pattern’ and measurements will be in the next newsletter. Otherwise Ruth will arrange something with those interested in the apron pattern.

Please remember to bring your helpful quilting tips (Q-Tips) and other tibits for the newsletter. Put them in the black box at the table I sit at. Or email me! Let me know if you want your name added. Remember it’s your newsletter! Have a great summer see you in Sept.!

FOR SALE

Ladies, a lady named Lila Howe asked if I would advertise her room divider. It is 6’ tall with 4 - 18’’ sections (6’ wide when open/attached together). It is presently taking up too much room in her apartment. She is not a quilter, but has used it with preprinted quilt panels. She paid $150.00 to have it custom made. Would sell for $50.00 OBO. I have seen it, and it’s very well made. Please call her at: 741-3422

The Quilting Bug By Bee Neeley Kukelman

I’ve been bitten by wasps And mosquitoes and bees. And by spiders and ants, And by flies and by fleas.

I have also been bitten

By a bug that’s quite nice. I refer to the love bug

Which bit once or twice.

The quilting bug hit me, What a bite that bug had!

I will never recover. I am certainly glad.

There’s just one good prescription

For relief when it itches. That’s relax and enjoy it,

And as needed, take stitches.

SOME HINTS FOR QUILTING TOOLS FOR TRAVEL

Summer is almost upon us and for some of us that means a time for visiting other parts of the province, or other provinces or even trips into the USA. Or trips to a cottage! Here are some helpful tips for when you’re away.

1. Take along a light bulb with high wattage to put into lamps in motel/hotel rooms so you can see better for sewing.

2. Use knitting needle protector tips on small scissors when you carry them in your bag. 3. Or, use a wine bottle cork on small scissors - great as a pin cushion, too! 4. Carry a magnet when traveling with sewing projects in the event that you need a quick pick up of

spilled pins. (Check out tip #7) 5. Use a small bar of soap for a pincushion. It lubricates needles and prevents pins from rusting. 6. Use empty paper towel rolls to wind binding, fusibles, etc. It prevents creasing. You may carry

your blocks this way when you travel. This prevents folds in the blocks. 7. Take a few extra programs home from quilt shows. Cut them up and glue proper identification on

the back of pictures. Write in the back of a program the number and name of each picture taken. 8. Use an empty 35 mm film container (or medicine container) to store straight pins and threaded

needles. Line the inside of the top with magnetic self-stick tape - 1/2’’ wide (or to fit container). This helps prevent a great mess if the pins spill in cars, buses, trains, hotel rooms etc… Leave a little thread outside so you can easily find needles that you need.

9. Use a large manuscript clamp to attach sewing bags or plastic bags containing your sewing sup-plies to either the shoulder seatbelt, your skirt, pants or jacket when you travel.

10. Label all your tools and supplies when you travel with other quilters. 11. Use an old eyeglass case (envelope style) to store and carry rotary cutters. 12. Use a clear plastic, zipped, makeup pouch to carry supplies (thread, scissors, etc.) for projects. 13. A softer eraser removes threads after ripping out seams. 14. Use an emptied and cleaned purse-size hand sanitizer bottle for hydrogen peroxide... no blood-

stained sewing projects to take home.
