DART SBC Sportsman Blocks

These days it is getting harder to find a decent block to base your

performance engine on. The bores can be too thin, with corrosion from

behind, there can be hidden cracks, the main tunnels can be out of line,

or maybe you just want to build a decent stroker. The little "M" block is

ideal to build your engine from, here are some of its features- uses std

small block parts, except for cam bearings which are 2" OD. Extra thick

cylinder walls [min .275" with 4.185" bore], priority main oiling system,

blind tapped head bolt holes, extra thick decks, centre 3 main caps are

ductile with 4 bolts [splayed outer]. Extras required- BYAJG375 rear

cam plug, BYGMP-8 2" OD cam bearings, or BYGMP-8T [coated

bearings]. On the 400 block, a BY2909 seal will also be required.

DART BBC Sportsman Cylinder Block C.I. 4.25" Bore

Dart have designed a user friendly block, with the features needed for

today. The lubrication system is a true- "priority main" system that feeds

all the main bearings before the lifters. A stepped main oil gallery

increases the flow of oil to the crank at high rpm. Two extra head stud

bosses have been added. Blocks are CNC machined. Siamesed extra

thick cyl walls. [.300" thick with 4.625" bore]. 4 bolt ductile main caps.

Crank tunnel has clearance for a 4.5" stroke with steel rods. Dual sump

bolt patterns. Bellhousing flange & rear mains are reinforced to resist

cracks. 2 piece rear seal. Can be bored to 4.625”. Dart claim this block

is good for 2000bhp.

“Goodwrench” New GM “Crate” Engine

These engines are manufactured by GM and are brand

new. Ideal for replacing a similar engine that is worn

out. Runs on std unleaded fuel. Here are some techni-

cal details of the 350 std version- 8.5 to 1 compression,

4 bolt mains, nodular iron cranshaft, hydraulic cam-

shaft, cast aluminium pistons, 1.94” inlet valves and

1.50” exhaust. Power is generally around 250bhp @

4000 & 360lbs ft of torque @ 3000.

block. It is fitted with a nodular iron crankshaft,

powdered metal steel conrods, cast aluminium pis-

tons, hydraulic camshaft, 212/222 @ .050”, 435”/

460” lift. Vortec 64cc heads, 1.94”/1.50” valves, 9:1

compression. 330bhp @ 5000rpm, 380 lbs ft @

3800rpm. Is fitted with chrome rocker cover & timing

cover. This engine uses a Vortec inlet manifold, which

is secured with only 8 bolts. Earlier 12 bolt manifolds

will not fit.

Everything you need to attach components and accessories from a long

block on up is packaged in one convenient kit. Nominally rated at

170,000 psi. Made from stainless 300 material with 12 point heads, and

polished to achieve a brilliant lustre. These kits are designed for Carb

engines, so you may need extra bolts for anEFI engine. Each kit

containes- inlet manifold bolts, rocker cover bolts, thermostat housing

bolts, alternator bracket bolts, distributor bracket bolt, engine mount

bolts, sump bolts, coil bracket bolts, header bolts, timing cover bolts,

water pump bolts, fuel pump bolts.

Moroso Oil return Gallery Screen Kit V8

This kit is designed to retain any metal fragments or loose components

resulting from a valve-gear failure in the lifter valley area. Avoiding the

extensive damage that could result to the internal engine parts if the

debris was allowed to enter the oiling system.

Eight plugs are included to plug the oil return holes in the lifter valley

above the camshaft. This redirects the oil to the front and rear return

galleries into which the screens are fitted. Oil is returned directly to the

sump area instead of dumping it on the crankshaft with consequent

increased windage and loss of horsepower.

V series bearings have a low to medium level of eccentricity with high crush &conrod bearings have a hardened steel back with no flash plating. The bearings are narrowed for greatercrankshaft fillet clearance. The chief difference between the V series & other Clevite 77 Trimetalbearings is the use of a lead-indium overlay. To build a 334cu in stroker, use a SBC 305 cylinder block bored to +.030”, together with a 3.75” stroke

Eagle crankshaft [not 400], and 5.7” conrods. Pistons are BYKB186030, and rings BYC3817030. A 400

externally balanced harmonic balancer & flywheel will also be required. All parts need balancing.

To build a 377cu in stroker, use a 400 SBC used block or a Dart BY31152211 cyl block, and bore to 4.155”,

use a 3.48” Eagle crankshaft, and 6” conrods. Use forged pistons BYKB762030 with rings BY3150032035,

& bearings BYCB663VN & BYMS1038H. This engine is ideal for a higher revving Race engine.

To build a 383cu in stroker, use a SBC 350 cyl block, bored to +.030”, together with a 3.75” stroke Eagle

crankshaft [not 400]. If you use 400 [5.565”] conrods, then you can use 350 pistons. 5.7 & 6.0 conrods

can be used, but be sure to match up to the correct “height” piston. Different compression ratios can also

be obtained. If you are using an externally balanced crank, then a 400 externally balanced harmonic

balancer & flywheel will be required.

To build a 427cu in SBC stroker, use a Dart BY31122222 tall deck [9.325”] cyl block & finish to 4.125”,

together with a 4.00” stroke Eagle crank and BYAJG580 Eagle 6.20”; “H” beam conrods with ARP 2000

bolts. Forged pistons are BYAJG590, rings are BY3150073005 Perfect Circle “Firepower” PC479,

together with a set of BY303-0319 3mm oil rings. Bearings are Clevite BYCB663VN, and BYMS1038H.

Conrods are good for 1100bhp.

To build a 496cu in BBC stroker, use a std deck [9.80”] 454 block, & bore to +.060”, together with a 4.25”

stroke crank, and 6.385” conrods. Add the appropriate pistons & rings suitable for your purpose. With a

cast crank, use bearings BYCB743P, and BYMS829P. With a forged crank, use bearings BYCB743H,

and BYMS829H. The cast crank & “H” beam rods with 8740 bolts is good for 700bhp. If you are using

a forged crank, & the “H” beam rods with the bolt upgrade, the kit is good for 1500bhp.

To build a 540cu in BBC stroker, use a 502 GM block, or a Dart BY31273344 cyl block, & bore to 4.50”,

together with a 4.25” stroke crank & 6.385” conrods. Add the appropriate pistons & rings suitable for your

purpose. With a cast crank, use bearings BYCB743P, & MS829P. With a forged crank, use bearings

BYCB743H, and BYMS829H. The cast crank & “H” beam rods with 8740 bolts is good for 700bhp. If

you are using the forged crank, & the “H” beam rods with the bolt upgrade, the kit is good for 1500bhp.

To build a 572cu in [9383cc] BBC stroker, use a Dart BY31263454 tall deck [10.20”] cyl block, and finish

at 4.50”, together with a 4.50” stroke crank, and the 6.535” L19 bolted conrods. Select the pistons and rings

that best suit your purpose. 1500bhp ok. Use bearings BYCB743H & BYMS829H. This kit is good for

1500bhp, naturally aspirated, and possibly more with a Turbo or 2.

All the above information is based on parts we sell, only. Remember, all

reciprocating parts must be balanced, and you must check the oil clearance

existing between the crank & the bearings. Crank, rods & pistons, must clear

the block, & each other, by a minimum of .060”.

Important: Check that your valve springs are not "coil binding" at full lift. It should be possible to open the valve a further .090", at full lift, with the liftersfull of oil, before the spring becomes "coilbound" or solid. main types, standard as used in the original “OEM” engine, or “RETRO”

for use in engines that never had a roller cam. Then there are standard,

These lifters are designed to operate at higher rpm limits, when used

with the correct preload. If you plan on running your engine past

5500rpm with a high lift cam, these lifters are safer to use. Same

fitting range as std lifters.

In some endurance uses & most oval track applications, it is necessary

to use a rev kit for the lifter to follow the profile of the cam. In the event

of a push rod or rocker arm failure, the lifter will not come out of the

lifter bore. This could save a loss of oil pressure and major damage to

the engine. The kit comes with all required springs & buttons.

Competition Cams Roller Thrust BearingThe stress placed on cams and timing gears has produced a weak area at the front of

the block where the cam gear rubs against it. This one piece encapsulated thrust

bearing solves this problem. Machining is necessary when used with oem type timing

Cam Thrust Buttons & LockwasherCam thrust buttons go between the cam timing gear and the inside of the timing cover.

They are mandatory with race roller cams, as the lobes are ground flat, not tapered

like flat tappet cams. This taper, drags the cam into the block when the engine is

started up. OEM roller cams normally have a retaining plate, and do not need a button.

Cam buttons can be used with all types of camshaft if the engine is used for Racing.

The thrust button controls the fore & aft movement of the camshaft, ensuring more

accurate ignition timing, and less wear on other components.
