Hello everyone,

As we approach spring, I cannot say enough how grateful I am to have such an amazing support system for Community during this season of change. With a new care center opening in Salmon Creek, we are more than thrilled at the opportunity to meet the needs of our patients and families, and we couldn’t do it without you.

I met some new friends this past week. When meeting new people it’s not long before the question is asked, “So, what do you do for a living?” I absolutely love that question. When I told them that I’ve worked at Community Home Health & Hospice for the past 10 years, sometimes people say, “Thank you.” Sometimes they say, “I only hear the best things about your services.” And sometimes they say “Wow…that must be really depressing…how do you do that day after day?”

Depressing?! Let me take this opportunity to shed some light on the over 500+ people who either work or volunteer here (we are about 250+ employees and 250+ volunteers). You see, it is FAR from depressing…quite the opposite. It is the most rewarding and uplifting job I could have ever imagined. Those of us who have chosen to work or volunteer here consider our roles a calling. As in…this profession chose US. Yes, it does take a special person to work with the sick and dying on a daily basis. For our special staff and volunteers, it is a privilege to come alongside patients and families at one of the most meaningful transitions of life, to escort our patients to their next journey (whatever that is), and to bring peace, dignity, and comfort. In our bereavement programs, we help survivors cope and process their grief after their loss.

When I am orienting our new staff, one of the things I tell them is that what we do as an organization goes far beyond the foundations of clinical expertise, pharmacological knowledge, therapeutic regimens, and patient education. Patients and families coming to our agency feel vulnerable and often times scared of what the future may hold. What we provide is PEACE OF MIND; the reassurance that you are not alone and that we are here to help on this journey we call “life”.

On behalf of the staff and volunteers of Community Home Health & Hospice, we happily devote our energy, skills, talents, time and resources to our patients and families. Thank you for the opportunity to be a part of your lives…it is a privilege!

Sincerely,

Greg Pang, CEO

P.S. – One of our long-term nurses, Sandy Makela, just retired after working for Community for 35 years! She says, “I have enjoyed my employment with Community so much. It has been an amazing experience being part of its growth from 10-12 employees to what it has become now. I’m looking forward to what Community will become in the future.” - Sandy Makela, RN

We will miss Sandy so much, and we congratulate her on her well-deserved retirement! We hope that all the great care you provided for 35 years will come back as joy and rest during your retirement, Sandy!

Greg Pang, CEO

Since the agency’s opening in 1977, Community has relied on donor support to provide the best quality of care to our patients and their loved ones. After 38 years of community support, growth is on the horizon. We cannot thank you enough for supporting Community’s mission throughout this journey.

Salmon Creek Grief Center project

With the opening of our 10-bed Salmon Creek hospice care center this spring (see back cover), we are already planning the next phase to meet community needs. In 2017 we will begin construction on a grief center, memorial garden and conference center adjacent to the new hospice care center. We are grateful for the early supporters of the integrated grief center scheduled for completion in 2018. Two of these supporters are highlighted below for their gifts designated specifically for this project.

Community Foundation invests in Clark County’s health

The Community Foundation for Southwest Washington pledged $50,000 for the grief center project.

“It is a wonderful feeling to have played an integral part in making this project a reality. Healthcare is central to a vibrant community, and this grief center and memorial garden ensure that residents and their families are able to find comfort when it’s needed most,” said Community Foundation President Jennifer Rhoads. The new grief center will be modeled after our successful James Avery Grief Center in Longview.

Umpqua Bank supports hope and healing

Umpqua Bank committed $5,000 to the grief center project which will include a memorial garden similar to the Ken Henderson Memorial Garden in Longview. Our goal is for the garden to become a community destination for hope, healing and recovery. In addition to the grief center and memorial garden, the project will include a community conference center to serve a wider array of local residents with services related to aging.

In Greg’s words, “We truly appreciate these community partners for investing in the transformational work of grief support.” From left: Samantha Sandford, VP, commercial

relationship manager, Umpqua Bank and our CEO Greg Pang examine plans for the new grief center project.

From left: Jennifer Rhoads, president, Community Foundation for Southwest Washington and our CEO Greg Pang in front of our new Salmon Creek hospice care center, scheduled to open in May.

All Clark County residents who have lost a loved one may participate in grief programs, free of charge. The center will have specific areas for different age groups including children, teens and adults. Other special spaces include a “volcano room” and “memory cave.” Free support groups will be scheduled so that an entire family may attend at the same time to participate in age-specific groups.

“Our agency provides these services free of charge, so this exceptionally generous gift from the Community Foundation will ensure Clark County families have access to vital grief support,” said our CEO Greg Pang.

Community Home Health clinical office staff Susan Mourning at her new desk provided by the Kaiser Equipment Surplus Warehouse donation. Before, Susan only had a metal desk with minimal storage to work with.

Kaiser Permanente donated nearly $9,000 in office equipment through the ”Kaiser Surplus Equipment Warehouse.” This grant opportunity is available to nonprofits in the northwestern region of the United States. Each winter, Kaiser fills the warehouse with extra equipment and supplies from their clinics. Nonprofits apply for a chance to “shop” at the warehouse between February and November. Approved nonprofits visit the warehouse to choose items they can use. On our trip last November, we selected much-needed office equipment for both Longview and Salmon Creek locations. We have been granted three more visits this year. Thanks to Kaiser for helping us stretch our budget so we can spend more on patient care!

Grateful Hearts

After a year on its feet, the Grateful Hearts program honored 27 staff members and brought in nearly $8,000.

Recognizing Community employees and volunteers has never been easier. Our Grateful Hearts program lets you recognize that special Community employee or volunteer by making a gift to our agency in their honor.

Whether it’s the biller who patiently helped you with your payment, or the social worker who held your hand or the nurse who provided direct care to your loved one, any of our staff and volunteers can be recognized through the Grateful Hearts program.

Questions? Contact Makayla at 360.414.5465 or [email protected].

Community Legacy Society

Hospice is a journey. Loralee May has taken this journey with two husbands. Both times, her husbands knew they would be comfortable with hospice care. Loralee and her family members were comforted, too.

We took care of Loralee’s first husband, Joe, at home. She said, “The staff came out to Ryderwood for many months. They took care of everything from medications to bathing. I was so thankful.” Years later, we took care of Loralees’ second husband, Bud. “He wanted to come to the Hospice Care Center. He was in a sweet little room and I felt so protected. The staff and volunteers made sure our family had what we needed. They were respectful and

they allowed things to happen in our own time. I felt like it was family taking care of us. You are the family that a lot of people don’t have,” she said.

Loralee is blessed with many caring friends and family members. “After my losses, people stayed in touch. I joined the grief support group and made new friends,” she said.

On a visit to the new Ken Henderson Memorial Garden in Longview, Loralee said, “This is going to grow. The memorial bricks are awesome. I just love this place.”

For many years, Loralee has made memorial gifts when a loved one dies. She knows these gifts will be used immediately for the benefit of patients. Loralee also thinks about the care that will be needed for future generations. She said, “I’m comfortable. The kids will be comfortable. I want Community Home Health & Hospice to stay here forever.” She found a way to help those who will follow her. When she updated her will, Loralee designated a cash gift for Community Home Health & Hospice. This heartfelt decision automatically enrolled her in the Community Legacy Society.

The Community Legacy Society recognizes generous people who make a planned gift to our agency through a bequest in their will or other arrangement. Society members inspire others to make life better for families in the future.

See page 20 for a listing of CLS members.
